Many aspects of the umpiring can be fixed fairly quickly and cleanly. But I'm increasingly coming to the realisation that there just isn't the will to actually make it happen. Most of the footy community seem to have a similar macabre attachment with subjective umpiring that Americans have with their guns.

I've now decided that it's never going to get better. It might favour us again one day, like it did when we were shit, but it'll still be broken.

100% Correct. The media are right behind the changes and LOVE them. Everyone outside the media or the AFL bubble think they are atrocious changes that do nothing to promote the game or make the game better to watch.

They’ve got Ralph polling people why they don’t go. Pretty sure leading vote was umpiring but I bet the AFL thought yeah nah must be covid related people are scared. Give it a week and they’ll re-poll with different journo.
Do you work at the AFL Tigs, you seem to know their modus operandi rather well 🤣

Think he should've waited a week.

Trying to remember if the Close punch out of bounds at the Cattery last year was on the siren with Gawn gifted a 50 to win after the siren? I mentioned above the Stynes incident clearly means a 15/50 can be paid after the siren. Just wondering if the Close incident is even more relevant to last night?

Most angry I’ve ever felt after a game. Richo hands in the back, Rodan being chased down bouncing on goal against North at McCartneys last game, and the Gold Coast last 75 seconds have all been surpassed. Thanks umps - you really are killing the game for me. The Rioli free and the unpaid 50 coming off 18 months of crap (the Stand rule, dissent, “dangerous” tackles and patently ridiculous and laughably inconsistent MRO ) is just too much. I’m taking a break from this sh*tfest.

Lets be honest, if the roles were reversed the umpire wouldn't have been able to blow his whistle fast enough and march us back 50 if he tried.

Just a gutless cowardly decision by an umpire who can now go and compare notes with the umpire from the 2015 EF who gutlessly didn't award Shedda a late game HTB free which would've put us in front that day.
Oh jeez, that one stuck in my craw for years. Every player on both teams stopped in their tracks for that one. It was a howler.

I wonder where the common sense was when Bachar Houli was penalised in a cauldron-like atmosphere over at Port when he marked the footy 30m out from the Power goal from a kick that had been apparently been touched 25 metres away. He was immediately set upon and tackled - clearly didn't hear the touched (not even a whistle!) but pinged anyway.

Is that umpire listening to his earpiece, looks to me like the decision not to award 50 was someone else's.
Match fixing

You just know that the AFL are going to double down on Richmond and let Buddy off.

Their way of saying to Dimma... We're the boss of you. What a farce.

Of course they want Lance lining up against Melbourne next week.

No wonder fans are jumping off this sport in droves. No integrity. It's astounding you can bet on it really.

Common sense is virtually another version of how long is a piece of string. Common sense to one person isnt the same to another. The AFL can essentially stand by 99% decisions on this basis and there isn't really much anyone can say otherwise.

Simple fact is that the rules have been over complicated and the umpires have so many things that they have to consider at any one time it's surprising they don't have to continually have time outs to refer to the rule book.

I have no problem with the 'common sense' decision that was made last night albeit a frustrating one in the circumstances. The issue as every other Tigers supporter would agree is consistency and that similar circumstances have been and will be adjudicated differently by other umpires and when that happens it always seems to involve us.

The only fair way to apply this rule is to the letter of the law itself, so did Warner kick the ball away after the free kick was awarded, yes he did, does that attract a 50 metre penalty, yes it does, the fact he might not have heard the whistle isnt a consideration the umpire is required to make. Then moving forward we don't have the issue of one umpire applying common sense and another not.

As it stands now and based on the support of last night's decision by the AFL, the umpires essentially have to be an audiologist to determine whether in similar circumstances the player in question heard the whistle, ridiculous situation.

For the avoidance of doubt, if immediately before hearing the siren to end a quarter, a field umpire is of the opinion that a Player should be awarded a free kick or a mark, the field umpire shall signal that play has come to an end and then award the free kick or mark to the player.”

There is no rule 10.5 c) common sense rule.
No excuse for our loss we own that , but
look at the hypocrisy of this organisation failing to admit when there wrong clowns.

Technically there. There was a fistful of jumper however briefly. However, the amount of holding that McCartin got away with on Riewoldt is disgusting, especially when that one was paid to Reid to open the game.

Reid's pushing him in the back anyway f*ck the umps why bother calling anything in that case (just kidding I know the answer it's because they want a goal and adbreak, plus it was against the Tigs)

Anyone that hasn't seen it. Go watch the last minute of the 2nd qtr between Shitfish and Druggos. Free kick awarded to Druggos before siren. Shitfish player throws ball away 50 is paid. You cannot make this shit up. Had a gutfull

I dont often watch games on TV live as I get far too angry and everyone at home here cops it unfairly. To complicate matters the Mrs is a mad demon supporter so she loves the media sucking off the game while all the mainstream media currently infuriates me. Thank heck for my special medicine administered via bong.

So I check the scores last night and see the usual fuking bullshit AGAIN! How else could they justify the pre game odds on that game. The oppo supporters are so blinded by hate from our recent dominence, they turn a blind eye to the obvious manipulation from higher up. heck you afl and heck u swear filter

3AW raised some interesting points today re the umpiring. Jimmy Bartel and Tim Lane were talking about how the game was umpired all night to the letter of the law eg the Bolton 50 the Rioli free on the boundary
But then at the end of the game when the free is there, all the commentators are saying let’s apply common sense!!!!

Where was the common sense for the other 119 minutes of the game?
