I think we should do away with "Never Tear us apart", "Not giving in" and the theme song.

All 3 convey negative connotations. i.e. instead of talking about being together, Never Tear us apart still contains the words "Tear us Apart". Not "Giving In" still mentions giving in. The theme song mentions Stopping.

Compare it to "Cheer, Cheer" which mentions "We'll come out and win over all" and "Onward to victory". Rather than "We'll come out and never lose" and "Onward to avoiding defeat".

It sets a negative emotion, rather than a positive message.

People criticising the club about our underachieving over the last 2 years should be grateful we've still got a club in any league.

Don't like what I said? I don't care. I'd rather be Richmond than Fitzroy.

The Creed: We exist to win premierships.
Established1870: We exist. Yay!

You know the words "Never" and "Not" change the meanings of the titles right?

I want us to be the best not better.

My kids are starting to think my old Port storys are that of myth and legend.

Of course, but it is the difference between saying you will win vs. You will not lose. To most they mean the same but by saying not lose you, you are still saying the word lose. There can be a subconscious effect (as my amateur physcology tells me).

I would be confident a sports psychologist would use positive affirmations rather than using the word not or never followed by the negative connotation.

I doubt it has any effect on the team, but the mental side of the game is becoming more and more important.

Because the premiership's sure been a cakewalk for Collingwood.

I would be confident a sports psychologist wouldn't give it a single thought.

And the Crows sure are respected by their foes.
And we never stop, stop, stop.

If only Churchill hadn't been so negative when he said we'll 'never surrender'. The other side did so much better with all their master race positivity.

No, not sure what that is about. Just a general feeling about how to phrase affirmations.

We did go top top top in 2002, 2003, 2004. We seem to have stopped since then

affirmations

Maybe we should get the players to write out "We will win the premiership in 2017" and stick it on the clubroom fridge with a smiley magnet.

The song maybe, but the sentiment is right.

A friend who is a sports psychologist tells me that reaffirming the positive and not trying to beat the negative is super important, and common.

For example, a golfer, attempting a 3 foot put. "Don't miss this" is far more damaging in his mind than "If you get this then...". Confidence/belief is always talked about being mostly helpful, but many don't really get why. Outcomes are so often the result of our thought processes. I think Butch had so much to learn here :(

But having said that, I don't think the players think about the song when lining up for goal. They do need to think about the quotes above though, and I can see where the original poster is coming from ;)

Positive affirmations in song lyrics, lol. Wait. We're not taking the piss? Oh. FMD.

Wonder what sports psychologists would make of my old uni footy team's song...

We don't play for adoration,
We don't play for victory.
We just play for recreation,
Mighty Wombats men are we.
Balls to everyone!
Balls to everyone!
We won't play you anymore,
We won't play you anymore.
Coz weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Gave you a f@%ken hiding
We gave you a f@%ken hiding
We gave you a f@%ken hiding
You!
Dirty pack of sluts!
You dirty pack of sluts! (You sluts!)
You dirty pack of sluts! (You sluts!)
We gave you a f@%ken hiding
We gave you a f@%ken hiding
We gave you a f@%ken hiding
You!
Dirty pack of sluts!

Im not sure a sports psych would know where to start with that one :p
