The bolded is the important part. I reckon as a supporter group one can (or at least should) forgive a muffed kick, fumble, dropped mark, inexperienced contest if player x was absolutely busting their arse and giving it their all.

Bulk of the comments about Mitchell on here doesn't reflect this though.

Yeaah but even then he's a popular figure and most respect him. I don't think anyone would have any major dramas having him as a rookie again either. If some of Port's more talented players had his attitude then many of the results would be different.

... but he has also had his chances too and its probably time to move him on.

Put it this way, Port will only be ultimately successful if all their talented players get the mental application right. Plodders who give their all but aren't quite good enough wont get it done, but the same can be said for talented players who aren't mentally strong enough.

Don't want one or the other, must have both.

Pains me to say it, but i think Schultz only has one more season like this years left in him, after that his body will drop away quickly. Would love to be wrong!!

Well. Accurate.

there was a huge overreaction here during trade week, I think Port have done well to gain four picks in the first two rounds

going by our past few drafts, we've done alright, probably the only duds we've picked up are Mitch Harvey and Mason Shaw, every other player we've drafted in the past three years has been serviceable

This thread has been made redundant a little, 2 years of shit football means every thread has an unpopular opinion or two.

I rate what Aaron young brings to the team as highly as wines and wingard. He just needs to believe he has it in him and produces on a regular basis

He needs to be left in the forward line. His form drop coincided with Ken's moving him around, after spending the first half of the year fixed firmly in the F50, moreso than the big recruit full forward.

Realise that we did already have 2 picks in the first round. It's not really "done well" it's a break even bet at this point. Only if we nail this draft will it be a win imo.

We also failed to move on any players to get to our draft position.

No, we had picks 9 and 48 prior to trade week.

The failure to move on players is disappointing, but I think we have actually done very well despite that setback to get into the draft position we are now in.

Next year's first rounder is an actual price we paid you know

The only value the 2017 pick has in 2016 is to be traded. We therefore used the full value of that future pick.

Yes it does come with the caveat that the club will need to trade into the first round next year but given we turned picks 9 and 48 into 14, 17, 30, 31 I have no doubt we will be able to achieve this. Constant trading of future picks to invest in the current year does have some risk to it, so hopefully years like this are interspersed with trading players for picks - but I still maintain that our trades regarding draft picks this year were very smart.

Ok: We turned 9, 48 and something that wasn't a draft pick this year into 14, 17, 30, 31.

I know people are already emotionally set against what we've done but looking at it logically it makes a lot of sense.
At a top four finish we turned pick 15, pick 9 and pick 48 into 14, 17, 30 and 31. On paper yeah, that looks okay.

Another middling nothing year and we turned pick 8, pick 9 and pick 48 into 14, 17, 30 and 31. Oh geez.

Call me emotional or whatever but that above is the actual truth about what we've done.

It's not that good. You can't really just turn around right after trade period and be like "oh actually yeah we have done really good to get into this position" because no, we didn't really do that good. We got into our draft position in the worst possible way ie selling out high picks rather than with players. Particularly dodgy when we haven't had a top 10 pick since before Hinkley had coached a game.

Well, time will tell, hey.

Carlton, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast have had a shit load of top 10 picks in recent years. Hawthorn, Geelong, Sydney have not.
I know what group I'd rather be a part of.

The best clubs understand how to use every single asset to its best potential. Sydney trade in and back their development team, Geelong and Hawthorn are happy to trade picks for players.

Additionally, when you look at the future pick you can't just leverage up it's draft position alone. Say we finish 10th again and therefore get pick 9. Even if the 2017 draft is exactly the same as 2016, the 2016 pick has more value as you get to use it right now - or in other words 2017 pick 9 is 2016 pick 9 minus one full year of development, which is quite substantial. The aim of the game is to improve now, and that's what Port put itself in the best position to do. Is it ideal? No. But our situation isn't ideal, and I think we did the best we could with the cards we have.
