Who is the massive knob at the AFL responsible for extending trade "week" to 3 weeks?

I remember when it was 4 days!

It was Priddis.

In all seriousness, I've made the point before that the exchange period is dealing with people's livelihood and the clubs' forward planning. It shouldn't be primarily a bite-sized spectacle for consumers. The fact that it results in a dragged-out three week news cycle is annoying for us but that's no reason to condense the process.

Also, I may be wrong but I don't think any of the major US leagues confine their exchange periods to just a few weeks of the offseason. The AFL is a bit of a peculiar beast in that regard.

Sure, but didn't Greg Swann come out and say it was at least a week too long, and that the 3 week period was having an adverse impact on the players?

And he is an administrator in the thick of it!

I would like to see them make it the entire off season and allow you to trade picks for future years. Aslo so you can trade players against their will, unless they have a "no trade" clause in their contract (which rookies can't get).

Then implement longer rookie contracts to stop these kids from leaving so early, or at least ensuring if they do want to leave, a fair deal needs to be worked out. 1st round draft picks get 5 years contracts at set rates, with years 4-5 can be cancelled by the club for a set partial payment. 2nd round picks get 4 year contracts (years 3-4 opt out), 3rd round picks get 3 year contracts (3rd year opt out) and everyone else 2 year contracts (2nd year opt out).

Then you get max flexibility for the club, more guarantee of a wage for the players (though it may not be with who they expected), and footy news 365 days a year.

In the NFL the exchange period is almost 7 months and goes well past the draft and about 2 months in to the season. Most other leagues are the same. So, you can fill a need for early injuries.

Different system though, its a lot more black and white in the NFL. Teams hold your rights for 4 years then you are a free agent. In the first instance the original team holds all the leverage and in the 2nd instance the player holds all the leverage. They don't have a PSD system but they do have a waiver system for players that are cut. They also don't have a COLA

The team also gets the leverage back when they extend contracts, which gives more certainty of income to players (at the expense of pay rises if you perform better and often with the risk of being traded against your will).

I suspect we are targeting Jonathon Marsh with our 2nd round pick. Dockers will have to take him with their 1st if they want him.

Personally love marsh's attributes except for the one thing which is incredibly important for a midfielder. The ability to read the play. He's an amazing athlete but not necessarily a smart footballer and outside of going from a terrible kick to a great one its the next hardest thing to teach imo.
