Toast Update for Josh Thomas

This kid is the best youngster we have on our list from the "untried or youth" group. He is miles ahead of any other youngster even if his body has failed him to this point. Some of the quality of games he has played in the VFL don't even compare to some of the rubbish the other youngsters have been dishing up.

We need him to come on and play some games this year.

All I know is, either way, he must be retained because we really lack a quality kid coming through and he is it.

It can be limited through less weight above the knees. So less upper body size and low body fat.

So for those stronger, heavier types the chances of these injuries are greater.

But on J.Thomas if he is coming back it would be fantastic. His game is very much like that of Luke Ball with his inside work. Very excited to have him back.
And then a player gives up size and gets pushed off the ball too easily.

Then we would be having threads about our Sports Science people not doing a good job because our players are not baulked up enough.

Hi TD
I went to training last thursday to watch the boys train for Friday night but I managed to get there around 9.30am..I noticed half a dozen VFL boys out on the trac and within 15 min they finished up..one of the lads was stubbsy & the lad sitting down taking his boots off was Josh Thomas..I asked him if he will play soon and he said yeah finally the coaches said next week I can have a hit-out he is off the injury list...so get ready next week hopefully Josh Thomas returns to the VFL for his 1st game this season :thumbsu::thumbsu::)

That will be Fantastic if he Comes back Next Week

Upper body strength is overrated.

It's best to have the core strength, strength through the legs and strength through the hips. Look at Gary Ablett, has tuckshop arms yet is so powerful and can win that contested ball consistently.

You don't have to be the biggest guy out there to be a very high level inside player. Simon Black is another inside player who has always been lean. Look at the way he is still producing into his 30s. Look at Dustin Fletcher down back, has been able to keep his pace, stay relatively injury free and massively prolong his career because there is less weight on his limbs. Nathan Buckley even was told to do the same where as he approached 30 he was told to lean down to help prolong his career.

From about the age of 28 every player must lean down to prolong their careers if they hope to keep injuries away.

I agree with the logic that you win with size. But you want guys to be lean and have lean muscle rather than just sheer size.

Seedsman will provide enough baulk for everyone. :)

Seriously though, there is not a lot that has been proven about predisposition to ACL tears. There is a mild association with having weak hamstrings relative to your quads. Those who've ruptured one knee are more likely to rupture the other but the link appears genetic. On similar lines, once Mitch Brown had done his, Nate was statistically more likely to rupture although not causally.

Interesting stuff, thanks

Well if he was on crutches he probably won't be. I'd be interested in confirmation on this. I suppose we'll find out this week anyway.

Wierd thursday training with the VFL rehab group & Saturday spotted on crutches ..yep confirmation is definitely needed on this one

Definitely on crutches on Saturday, he and his mate came through our row. Was tempted to ask him as he went past but decided not too. Seemed in good spirits though, if that means anything.

You guys who saw him sure That it was Josh? Was he in any club gear?

I meant to say Friday night not Saturday. I saw him at the Carlton game in his team tracksuit on crutches with another guy who wasn't a player. It was pretty funny they came down our row looking for their seats, they were in the wrong section, had a quick look at their tickets and pointed them to their seats. Our MCG away seats are in M29 all non-playing players and family seem to sit in M30.

99% sure it was him, if not it was an another player in team gear on crutches that looks pretty much like him.

It's possible he had a Saturday morning appointment with a specialist who reviewed him and gave him the green light to play again...

Josh and Jamie Elliott look pretty similar, and considering Elliott is out with an injury at the moment, I'm going to assume you saw Jamie on crutches, and not Josh, especially after what Dayna36 said earlier in this thread about JT returning to the VFL next week.

The problem with JT now though is his complete lack of match practice in the last 3 seasons, I'd be shocked if he's played 10 VFL games in the 3 years he's been at the club, which means he will need at least 3-4 games to get to any level that sees him pushing for senior selection.

He has the talent, he just needs to have some luck for once.

Well JT might have some Luck as he is back earlier than his 1st 2 Seasons and Ball has done his Knee so IF he does play well like he has in the past for a 2-3 Weeks he could be in the AFL Side

I saw a guy in Chapel St today on crutches, non weight bearing at all.

Was sure at the time it was Josh Thomas

Sure it wasn't this Josh Thomas?

Josh is still listed as indefinite on the updated injury list for this round. Maybe you did see JY on crutches, and Elliott at training? I agree they do look alike.

My aplogies for my earlier post on this thread something went wrong because he was sure he was going to play this week...but not the case anymore :(:(:(
