AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Cox also "only" had 8 contested marks that night, not a dozen like you suggested, so it still makes you wrong.
Ellen was the first example in the original post.Thread isn’t complete without a Shane Ellen mention. Was an obscure part of the crows side but became integral to the GF win.
Would that be Graham, Jack Graham, that is?Jack Graham in the Grand Final, in game number #5 after doing very little in the finals but tackle, tags Rory Sloane out of the game after half time, kicks 3 goals and writes a name for himself in Richmond folklore
Is top 3 in the Hawks B&F really that hard these days though?Ricky Henderson. Delisted by the crows and top 3 b&f at the hawks.
This sounds more like outstanding finals performances in an otherwise unremarkable career.
When I think 'uphill skiier' I think someone who's struggled for a long time with a lot of adversity to show their grit, determination and talent. I think a fair few players fit under that category. Some inspiring stories.
This guy gets it.
James Hird - a classic example. Injured several times, had to have his face peeled off for surgery after his face was caved in. Kept on going. But I await the plebocratic masses to respond to this post with "YUH DRUGS" because they cannot comprehend the fact that this guy might well have been the toughest player in the game.

Agree. A good recent example is the turnaround by Chris Mayne. On the scrap heap at Collingwood, intense media scrutiny about the size and duration of his contract his back was pressed so hard against the wall it’s a surprise he didn’t have cracked ribs.
Fought back, took on a new role and re-established himself as a key part of a nearly premiership winning side.
Other players that spring to mind are the mature age guys who just have to fight to get on a list and prove themselves. Your Michael Barlow, Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis type operators
Bit like Paul Medhurst back in the day. Always great to see players get a second shot at another club.
I think Mayne was travelling pretty well at Freo but not well enough to justify the contract the pies gave him but he turned to absolute s**t in his first year at Collingwood. Credit it to him he fought back.
Tory Dickson seems to become a deadeye in finals.
He went to another level in that finals series. He's always been one.
He's always been one.
I’d nominate Patrick Cripps for this category, particularly 2018 version who polled Brownlow votes 9x in 20 losses. As a contrast, last year’s winner Tom Mitchell polled 2x in 7 losses, while Steele Sidebottom (the other player ahead of Cripps) did not poll any votes in losses. That’s not a criticism of either player - it’s just bloody hard to poll votes in losses.
Its an interesting one. When we win, unless its by 10+ goals there is almost always an opposition player (or even 2) who get votes. When we lose, regardless of the amount, we almost never get a player to sneak some votes.
Whether mindset of umpires, or a sign that we are a fairly balanced team with few stand-outs, its always intrigued me.
