Welp, Donald Trump has been inaugurated which means the clock is officially ticking to the next Presidential Election.

Once we get to 2028, this will be the first election in 12 years where the constitution mandates we have a new President as Trump will have finished his second term.

There's a wide and open field of likely candidates on both sides of the aisle, and it's going to be interesting to see who ends up winning the nomination for both parties.

This all assumes, of course, that we survive Trump's second term and the constitution remains in-tact. Republicans are already trying to amend the Constitution to allow Trump a third term in office, after all...

At this early stage of the process, I reckon California governor Gavin Newsom is a genuine shout to become the next face of the Democratic party.

He's not afraid to stand up to Trump and MAGA (literally, as shown here "welcoming" Trump to California today as part of his tour of the wildfire-affected areas in LA);

Not necessarily. Not if the Trump doesn’t last the full term. My fantasies are rampant.

It'll be JD Vance versus whichever Democrat campaigns on the most centrist, non-bandwagon-disturbing, pro-capitalist platform so as to secure the nomination.

And unless they exude Obama-like charisma, they'll lose again to the easy elixir of fascism because doing nothing to fix the problems of modern capitalism but giving us something to blame for it looks better than doing nothing to fix the problems of modern capitalism and pretending there are no problems. Those are the two choices the oligarchs allow.

Newsom cut climate funding days just as the fires in LA began burning, and his cuts in 2024 included wildfire prevention and forest resilience. It should be disqualifying. He's high profile and all but I feel like most of the people championing him haven't looked at his record, which is about as inspirational as, well, any of the Democrats' other failed presidential candidates of late.

Of those listed, AOC's the best but even then, she's pretty flawed and falls into the liberal trap of prioritising righteousness over forming a movement (which is what's required and what Bernie tried to do, but fell short on - basically you need someone who can do that but better).

Trump has proven that you can say anything you want and still be elected.
Kamala can't be seen again.
Democrats have to put up somebody either balls out narcissistic or somebody with actual policy.
Republicans will go down the same track for at least 8-12years.
