Welp, Donald Trump has been inaugurated which means the clock is officially ticking to the next Presidential Election.

Once we get to 2028, this will be the first election in 12 years where the constitution mandates we have a new President as Trump will have finished his second term.

There's a wide and open field of likely candidates on both sides of the aisle, and it's going to be interesting to see who ends up winning the nomination for both parties.

This all assumes, of course, that we survive Trump's second term and the constitution remains in-tact. Republicans are already trying to amend the Constitution to allow Trump a third term in office, after all...

At this early stage of the process, I reckon California governor Gavin Newsom is a genuine shout to become the next face of the Democratic party.

He's not afraid to stand up to Trump and MAGA (literally, as shown here "welcoming" Trump to California today as part of his tour of the wildfire-affected areas in LA);

Not necessarily. Not if the Trump doesn’t last the full term. My fantasies are rampant.

It'll be JD Vance versus whichever Democrat campaigns on the most centrist, non-bandwagon-disturbing, pro-capitalist platform so as to secure the nomination.

And unless they exude Obama-like charisma, they'll lose again to the easy elixir of fascism because doing nothing to fix the problems of modern capitalism but giving us something to blame for it looks better than doing nothing to fix the problems of modern capitalism and pretending there are no problems. Those are the two choices the oligarchs allow.

Newsom cut climate funding days just as the fires in LA began burning, and his cuts in 2024 included wildfire prevention and forest resilience. It should be disqualifying. He's high profile and all but I feel like most of the people championing him haven't looked at his record, which is about as inspirational as, well, any of the Democrats' other failed presidential candidates of late.

Of those listed, AOC's the best but even then, she's pretty flawed and falls into the liberal trap of prioritising righteousness over forming a movement (which is what's required and what Bernie tried to do, but fell short on - basically you need someone who can do that but better).

Trump has proven that you can say anything you want and still be elected.
Kamala can't be seen again.
Democrats have to put up somebody either balls out narcissistic or somebody with actual policy.
Republicans will go down the same track for at least 8-12years.

Don't mind Vance at all but would have to go with Raging Ronny DeSantis.
"Florida is where woke goes to die" :p
The conservative movement is not dying anytime soon. If anything, I reckon it will grow stronger.

Also happened in the 60's and 80's.
This right wing = Nazism is getting old and is so far from the truth. Anyone a fraction to the right of centre is a nazi to most raging lefties.

There's much more to right wing politics than Nazism.

I don't think Orban is a Nazi, I don't think Putin is a Nazi, I don't think Trump is a Nazi.

I do think they're all authoritarians, which is most decidedly not conservative politically, and not what I imagine most 'right-wing' voters actually support.

Here's a fun activity; the below should only take a couple of minutes and is an indication of the US political landscape were it divided amongst parties who legitimately represents a cohort of people (e.g. Biden and AOC shouldn't be in the same political party).

I'd be intrigued to find where your views land you.

It says I am closest to the Patriot Party but my dot is to the left of the vertical centre line.

Thanks for taking the time; socially conservative but moderately economically progressive. Right (conservative) and Left (progressive) is a pretty reductive binary option and not really representative of how lots of people 'fit' into the political landscape given people tend to vote on both social and economic factors.

In the US system AOC and Biden are both 'left' Democrats, despite Biden and AOC not being on the same planet when it comes to their actual politics. Their two-party system is deeply broken and not really representative of a huge number of actual voters.

Here's mine. Interesting. Probably accurate in that I'm proletarian, but would not vote Democrat under its current guise. The American political system needs to be significantly overhauled imo.
