I'm so used to saying this now that it's almost become a meme, but the play of the match was one Isaac Heeney. That goal from the boundary line was quite possibly his best ever moment as a Swan. Supreme confidence, supreme skill.

Just as Richmond have done for Dusty over the last four years, we are making life easy for our most talented player. He is not having to work over time to cover the ground and win his own ball, and is instead preserving his energy staying closer to goal and getting it delivered straight to his bread basket. And surprise surprise he is in career-best form.

The team as a whole has a bit of arrogance and it’s a really important ingredient. We can’t take a step backwards. Even when the other team gets a run on we stay in their face and we respond accordingly.

Even guys who I wouldn’t imagine being that way are showing real swagger. Florent and Logan seem like nice guys but they waltz around out there and it’s fantastic.

This is 2014-2016 Sydney but younger and more skilled.

100%. As an 18 year who burst onto the scene we expected too much, he was played in many positions and in recent years a team on the decline.
It's his time to shine.

Although I would way his greatest moment thus far was his mark of the year!! Not taking anything away from yesterdays kick

The mark was Heeney just being a freak. But that goal yesterday... the way he just made the moment his, he looked assured he would kick the goal, when he had no right to. My granddad was grumbling in his recliner about how Heeney was a "dill" for thinking he could kick that. And then he calmly went back and executed it to absolute perfection. The old man who is very sick now and is also a West Coast supporter still couldn't contain his excitement when it went through. He jumped up and punched me square in the arm and said "You bewdy!" So admittedly I am bias towards that moment, but in short it felt like Heeney fully realising that if there's any player in the AFL with no limits to what he can do, it's him.

Quality self flagellation on the Richmond board:

“We made Reid look like a player. Let that sink in”.
As Hardwick said post match the Tigers need to tweak their game plan. They have only managed 11 goals and 10 goals in the last two weeks against bottom 4 teams from last year on their home deck. Unless Dusty fires they comeback to the pack at this stage.

Sounds like a memorable moment with the old man!
I would argue that both are freakish - a non preferred snap on the boundary from about 45m isnt seen often.
The context of his mark against Melbourne is also worth highlighting, it happened deep in the 4th q against the dees when they were mounting a comeback of sorts, horse threw heeney down back and he played a ripping last q, including this hangar.

I absolutely loved every one of Wicks marks in the 50. Told me that the Swans were looking for the open player not the star player.

If we keep that up, we will go deep into September.
Yep - we were lowering our eyes and taking the best option. It'll be interesting to see if we can stay disciplined with this when Buddy returns. He is hard to ignore and really demands it but I really hope we stick with this style.

It’s hard but we can’t afford to go back to old ways

Is it odd that I kinda wish Buddy wouldn’t flap around for it as much? He knows his presence can’t be ignored but often he’s surrounded and he’s not great overhead but he still wants it.

Our forward entries were so refreshing yesterday.

Not at all. I feel the same way. I'm sure the coaching staff is aware of this and if they havent already done so they need to ensure that Buddy isnt the focal point any more. Even if it means Buddy is a little offended but I'm sure this can be delivered in a subtle way. One of our major strengths is our unpredictability and many avenues to goal.

I was really happy at the ground last week that there were a few times Bud was screeching around trying to get given the ball inside 50 or just outside but he was ignored and others were picked. I think the coaches know now we can't rely on him and don't need to so I'm sure they're on top of it. Plus Bud is not silly, I think he'll adapt over time. In the 2013 GF for example, he played a very quiet role for the good of their side as Hawthorn transitioned away from him being their number one man. Particularly if a flag is on offer over the next two years, I think he'll adapt as needed.

To those who tipped the Swans, good on you. To those who didn't or thought we'd go down by 5 goals (hello Punts but you're not alone). Seriously, when did we last lose to Richmond by 5 goals ? Even last year we were only 8 points off them and we're a much improved team since then with a much healthier list. And when did we ever lose a day game to Richmond at the MCG ?

Form is always the best guide. Not last year's form, this year. Ask GWS how much the previous year's form counts.

As I said in the game preview......

Form :

Swans coming off 7 day break after facing good competition in Brisbane (13th after going down to Geelong by one point and narrowly defeating Collingwood but they beat Richmond in the finals) and Adelaide (6th - after beating good teams in Geelong and Gold Coast)

Richmond coming off a 6 day break after facing Carlton (15th) and Hawthorn (14th after beating lowly Essendon by 1 point in Rd 1)

It's hard to judge early season form but suffice to say the Swans are better rested than Richmond after bigger wins against arguably much better opposition. Neither teams is unduly hampered by injuries.

Reputation and history mean nothing to our young Swans, who are eager to continue writing their own history. Swans by 14 points

Conditions were perfect for our game style and we're used to the heat. Personally I hang my own head at not believing in our young Swans enough. Big kudos to Swans BF fan Kennedy Parker who had the balls to predict us thrashing them, though even his 61 point win prediction would have been off the mark if we'd converted our shots better. We kicked 7 posters FFS. We could have easily added 10 more gettable no pressure goals, which would have been a far more accurate picture of our dominance.

Richmond were lucky to sneak a few junk time goals when we'd put the cue in the rack. The brutal reality for them is we not only pulled their shorts down in front of their faithful, but we bent them over and we whacked them hard in the balls with a sledge hammer. We did it continuously for the better part of 4 quarters too, so no wonder our boys looked spent.

What a shame Horse didn't make a post-match comment about Hardwick trying to clog up our 50 with his boring style of play. Even Lynch went back in defence as they tried to stem the flow.

After waking up the footy folks of QLD and SA this win tells the Vics that the reborn Swans have arrived, that we're tired of being ripped off and cheated and we want the cup back, the one that was stolen from us in 2016 in the most egregious example of daylight robbery by the w@nkdogs and those tiny d£cked Melbournite socialites who roll themselves in pigshit at AFL(VFL) HQ while teams are forced to cut costs and shed hardworking staff. Stuey Maxfield, this win is for you.

This win tells the whole footy world that Richmond are not only beatable but they're thrashable. We also showed them the recipe for shutting down Martin, who's averaged a mere 7.5 kicks, 10 handballs, 1 mark, 1/2 goal and 1/2 tackle over his last two games against the Swans. Richmond fans may think he's a goat but against the Swans it's no acronym.

Roll on Swans. Roll on.
Beautiful mate.

Pyke tactically is really strong, but this game plan/structure was formulated and implemented in 2019.

In that year we tried to move the ball more direct and by foot, but couldn’t consistently hit targets and were sliced and diced by the opposition (particularly at the SGC).

In 2020 we improved our field kicking, moved the ball better for patches and won games with it or just fell short at times.

What Pyke does bring this year is a better structure so that we can defend when we do lose the ball.

Oh and having a ruckman that can halve the contest and allow you to consistently set-up around the ball the way you want helps as well.

Not to mention our training facilities/ ground improved in late 2019, but was then again rendered useless through covid.
The Hub definitely helped the group gel but once back at our own facilities we seem to have taken the next step.

This is a point barely touched on amid all the excitement of the first three rounds ... i mentioned it in a post before the game yesterday: heeney is our elite-level superstar, but it's only now it looks like we have the team around him to be that X-factor star, rather than have to use his many talents to plug holes all over the ground and wear him down ... everything about him so far suggests he's as healthy as he's been in his career to date, he's leading and taking strong marks, the entire league knows he can take the hangers ... with franklin and mcdonald as key targets, and the likes of papley and wicks et al all over the ground, how dangerous does that make heeney, floating around the forward half? he's just about impossible to match up on in those circumstances ... and the key to it all is the outstanding skills of the players up field, delivering silver service to all these forward options ...

Hi all,

Just wanted to say how impressed I was with Rampe's response to the collision with Kamden Macintosh.

Your captain is a quality individual.

Congratulations on the win, too. It was some very impressive football.

But mainly here to say how impressed I was with Rampe.

Went to the Tigers page for melts, all I got was premiership chat and umps robbed them. Drinking the coolaide down at Tigerland

Wicks did all these things at NEAFL level. I think his biggest haul was 4 against Giants. He also kicked 3 against Suns. He has always been that really dangerous goal sneak. He finds space and leads well. He is a clever player who, even at NEAFL level knew the value of a tap out to a teammate if he was going to be tackled.

You are so right. Tonight was such a wonderful team effort. Some of the play was just sensational. This sort of play is normally confined to the finals series.

there's something very jeff spicoli about wicks, both his look and his attitude ...

Summarized this perfectly mate.
Not like for like, but I also feel for Will Hayward as he was also plugging gaps last year and I feel like he has lost his way a little. They need to find a permanent position for him too, though he will need to break back into the team now. He is still an outstanding talent.
