Eddiesmith, I played for Collegians in that grand final and was just wondering what would have happened had the game been called off due to lightning. Would it be replayed the next week or would the result stand as it was?

By the way, I thought both umpries were very good (it's a pity we don't get that kind of officiating during the year). Except for one decision when after a goal the umpire balled it up in the middle without waiting for the players to be ready. Although it made no difference to the result as we were beaten by a much better side.

Being after half time then Marcellin would have won, but we would have gone off untill the storm passed, and we would have probably been back on within like 10-15 minutes anyway. If it happened in the first half, and it stuck around for a couple of hours (which is highly unlikely) then it would have had to be replayed the next week but after half time the team in front wins.

Was a good game, after half time :D Did you guys pick up your intensity or did you feel like they had dropped off slightly?

As for that quick bounce, that shocked me, looked up from putting the flags away and the play had already started yet, dont know what happened there. But i agree the umpiring was quite good. Always maintain most umpires in the VAFA are better than their AFL counterparts :p

Big news if true. Might be a little bit of cash involved, from what I hear there are already a couple of Cobras who break the rules, so to speak.

Pure sarcasm. Not true. Frankly, with respect, Ramsden going to Bulleen Cobras would be the equivalent of Mark Ricciutto playing for Adelaide University in 2004 after tying for the 2003 Brownlow.

Just made it up to show how off-beat OC's Big Cat rumour was.
Big Cat's going to Sydney for work for 5-6 months and will be back in March '06 ready for A Grade.

On a more relevant and serious note, great work by OMs Magoos in knocking off Xavs to get into the GF against Scotch. Should be a great curtain-raiser. As for the seniors, I think there'd be plenty of sympathy out there for the Bloods, who did a Geelong and lost the Prelim to Xavs, when Lynch kicked a goal with his first kick of the game with 13 seconds to go.

Devastating, but I'm strongly barracking for a Varsity back-to-back win, like most people I presume!!

Also good to see the Hoers get back up after last years last gasp Prelim loss to Collegians. I'd expect them to give a very good showing in A Grade next year....

Hi all. Breaking my forum virginity so please be gentle.
Saw a great contest at headquarters yesterday - heartbreaker for the Bloods as Xavs write another chapter of September magic.
Would have been nice to see our esteemed A Grade correspondent Jonathon Horn drag himself away from his constant stream of vitriol against Old Haileybury for long enough to acknowledge the efforts of club stalwart Matty Armstrong in playing 300 games. This is an amazing feat ( as anyone who has played the game will agree ) and the lack of acknowledgement by Mr. Horn is inexcusable. Perhaps I am being too harsh and should recognise his journalistic integrity, although anyone who has penned an advertisement for a 1978 Cortina in the "Trading Post" has achieved the equivalent level. I await with great anticipation his first novel - "Me, Tony Greig and other people you wish had stayed in England".
Perhaps he should concentrate more on the real happenings in the competition than on whether he would prefer to be the lovechild of the Sheikh, or Brett Dobson.
Or maybe both.
I wonder if Scribe2 might respond on his behalf.
Congratulations to all the weekends Premiers and promoted clubs, and looking forward to 2 great Grand Finals this week

Official news from me is that I am clear to umpire a grand final this, after a weekend spent on the couch with the flu.

Looking forward to seeing people at headquarters on both days.

How was that clown in the Syd v Geel game dancing around the still ball on the goal line. Is that what they train you to do Pazza...?

You've gotta be on your toes Benny...and yes I admit I do move like that at times.

Did you play Saturday? If so, sorry I didn't bump into ya. Bad loss by the look of it in the finish.

I was there on Sunday and Haileybury should be bleeding big time that they don't get a second chance at Uni Blues. OH are a far superior football team than OX and I can't understand how they have beaten them at all this year let alone 3-0, I still don't believe that OX got home in the end. It was just a matter of september experience getting into the OH heads and the ctholics bluffed their way through again with their bs carry on. At least OH would have given the Blues a test next week.

I think OX may as well drop their pants now and prepare to receive the absolute spanking that uni will deliver them.

U Turn

I couldn't agree with you more. Jonathan has been incredibily harsh on Haileybury these past two years. And that idea for the book was a real rib tickler.

I think you may be slightly skewiff however, in terms of his relationship with the Sheik from Old Xavs. The Sheik is a terrible man and the two do not get along.

Have an enjoyable summer.

I hear that Josh Mahoney is going to leave Port to play with NOBS next year. Apparently he wants to play with his twin brother Alphonse.

I too have heard these rumours. Apprently Michael Sholly is conducting an investigation into NOBs, as it appears that Mahoney filled a key defensive post in the NOBs reserves on several occasions this season.... Apparently he almost played 1's in the final game.

Gee OC that is interesting. I would have thought Mahoney would be too good for the NOBs 2's. Perhaps they were trying to keep it quiet that he was playing with them and Power at the same time. I would have thought that by playing with the NOB's he would have been very popular with the ladies down there?

I have played many games at the Gillon and cannot recall seeing a bird there. However, if there were tarts at the Gillon, I'm sure that Mahoney or his look alike would have slayed them all. Unfortunately, it is more of a Bratwurst convention at the aptly named NOBs

Last year when the Power won the premiership, Alphonse cashed in, even carried around his North A2 Cricket medal, moonlighting as Josh Mahoney. Shame they have dropped out of the finals race this year. On a brighter note, i will be in Adelaide soon on the nobs footy trip so there is bound to be some Port fans waiting. Maybe Scott Sleep can be Stuart Cochrane.

Perhaps 'Meat Tray' can wear a red mop and be Cameron Ling...?

I see in the herald sun that the Euroa boys are into the GVFL grand final, the day after the AFL grand final (possible the worst time to have a grand final)

What have the been doing since OT's finished up. Have you see them around.

Also will the OT boys get a bus up to wherever they play the granny, (I think Shepp) on that sunday for a few 'country' beers

The Euroa boys have still been training as a group on Thursdays, under the tutelage of Phil Gaut (our senior co-coach). Obviously at this stage of the year training's not rocket science, but they've got through unscathed.

Dunno if there'll be a busload of us, but I have every intention of going up (especially if Mansfield are in as well, as a couple of mates play for them). OTs B&F is on the Friday (23/9), so I'll be recruiting willing participants for the 'road trip' that night.

Will probably be the best standard GF outside the VFL (though EFL may argue otherwise), so it should be a cracker!

Final training session for the umpires tonight at HQ.

Thought I'd give a bit of a profile of the 4 goal umpires who did the A and B Senior Preliminary Finals last week:

Steven Piperno:

Of all the kids that have joined the goal umpiring ranks in recent year, young Pipper is the best of them. Still in his teens, Steve has come on in leaps and bounds in 2004, and last week's A Preliminary final appointment is testimony to that development. Is a likely recommendation to head to the VFL in the summer.

Kevin Segota:

You wouldn't know much about the VAFA if you didn't know of Chili. Former A Grade Grand final field umpire, work on the boundary and numerous years in the goals. Despite his achilles injury last year, Kevin has shown just how good he is with his efforts this year.

Bernie Hoare:

The Fireman is one of the VAFA's great goal umpiring stalwarts. Numerous A and B Grade Grand Final appointments in the goals over the years. Consistency is the key here.

Bernie Jephson:

The man who travels from Kilmore every week, is well loved amongst the Umpires Association. Once again, his consistency has been the strongest thing of note.

Of course, this weekend is a big weekend in the Elsternwick Park umpires rooms. Sunday has the now traditional A Grade Grand Final brunch, which will be well attended and has St. Bernards coach Simon Madden, as it's guest speaker this year.
