Still in shock about this. Marsh was sad, but he was before my time so it doesn't hit quite as much as watching someone growing up. When Gough mentioned the Greg Jericho quote of Gen Xers losing a childhood sport idol and then one of their own, us Gen Yers/Millennials have lost of our own childhood sporting idols :(.

Legendary player, legendary.

Easily the best bowler I’ve ever seen, and IMO the best cricketer of the past 40-ish years.

I still remember staying up into the early morning in 1999 to watch that semi final against South Africa.

Australia makes a mediocre 213, South Africa get to about 0/40 in reply pretty easily and it looks just about done and dusted.

The balls gets thrown to Warne. He lets rip a delivery just about as good as the Gatting ball (IMO) and Herschelle Gibbs is dismissed. Gary Kirsten and Hansie Cronje follow quickly. Suddenly they’re 3/50 or so and Australia right back in it.

The next 8 or so overs the South Africans are just mesmerised by him, playing defensive to every ball just to see out his 10 overs, even though they badly need to lift the run rate.

Phenomenal performance. Literally no one else could have gotten Australia back into that match the way he did.

RIP to a legend.

Suspect he had the odd dart but more just a regular drinker. But he never been slim, so maybe the fat face and stocky body was too much work for the heart to distribute what it needed out.

Plenty of people with fat faces and stocky bodies live to ripe old ages. And not forgetting that sadly Warnie is outlived by both his parents.

Shane was on yet another health kick too:

Will leave it to the health experts to make an assessment of causes of his sad early death in due course but will not be surprised if his lifestyle and long term smoking habit will be raised in passing as will his recovery from covid, a documented high risk factor coronary heart disease.

Either way, he crammed more life into those 52 years than the vast majority of us will be able to do, even if we live beyond 100.

Someone on the ABC not reading the moment and talking about themselves.

Surely you jest.

It's obvious Warnie wasnt a saint (other than a supporter) and he paid for his mistakes. Probably more than considering what he was punished for.

One thing life has taught me is that there are very few unflawed greats. Without thinking everyone could reel off 10.

He also an interview on ABC that couldn’t have been more glowing

Im still laughing about the story about Warney is Gillys autobiography.

It was just after he got busted in his playboy undies in the newspaper with the models and he got dragged to that camp under Buchanan.

He got told they were only allowed 1 spare set of undies to take & to give the boys a laugh, he picked those undies and made sure the whole team saw he had packed them.

On that same camp, the army guys running it said to everyone you aren't allowed to take your ciggies with ya. Warney said if the ciggies aren't going then the king isn't going....guess what, he was allowed his ciggies...long live the king!

RIP

He was allowed to smoke on that I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here show too, it was one of his prerequisites for appearing on the show.

No one else could probably get away with that other than Warnie but they were so desperate to get him on the show that they bent the rules for him.

He really was a legend both on and off the field.

Hang on.

Wasn't it just last week where the Vic Govt, MCG and AFL agreed the Great Southern Stand needed to be torn down as part of an urgent MCG rebuild because it's out of date and lagging behind the quality of stadiums in other cities?

Either way, the new stand which replaces it whenever it happens will still have the same name.

Do not think he was a drug taker according to a few friends of his.

I mean we don’t know, but yes if he was into anti aging stuff that could of played a part (especially with unsafe super fast weight loss).

I mean doesn’t matter in this particular moment, but for someone like me a decade younger just a reminder how short life is and how it can all end in an instant.
