Who do we blame for the team continually failing to show up to play?
This can’t be put down to the team’s average age or lack of experience because even young teams are capable of showing some spirit.
The coaches said they would fix it over the summer. The team have spent 3/4 of a season being aware of it and presumably trying to fix it but they have categorically failed. Is it because JL is too quiet, do the majority of the team lack mental toughness? Did we spend the summer playing markers up and attempting to avoid unnecessary injuries in the preseason?, ironically something this coaching group has actually succeeded in doing. I scoffed at anyone who predicted we would finish outside the eight this year, but we look like a bottom 4 side and we play like a bottom 4 side and I suspect that if I bother to look at the ladder at the end the season we will be a bottom 4 side.

What I can't reconcile is we were actually leading the Dogs in the last Q last week after playing out of our skins.

Yesterday reminded me of the first couple of weeks of the season where it looked like the players didn't want to be out there.
They later admitted they had put too much pressure on themselves and everyone went into their shells.
JL talks about it in the presser as the players "internalising" and getting stuck in their own heads.

We know this team can play better footy and JL has, as good as said, this is a mental problem.
So whose fault is that? And why are teams like Port and Collingwood running above the ground and we're sinking in mud?

Is it lack of leadership on the field? Is it coaching? Both?

It's honestly lack of age... They're an immature bunch and desperately need to develop some on field leadership.

Sorry, that’s a BS throw away line to draw the attention away from the following facts:

1. Our midfield isn’t big enough
2. Our midfield doesn’t work for each other to overcome point 1.
3. We Continue to run the same players through the middle expecting a different result.
4. We have the most dominant big man in the game who can direct the tap at will most weeks.
5. We repeatedly fail to capitalise on point four.

That is coaching, that is instruction, that is on JL and his team of coaches.

Personally I think being in a game up until 3/4 time before trailing off in the last quarter is a behaviour often demonstrated by young inexperienced teams so I can kind of accept a performance like that or at least understand it. It’s the ones where they don’t show up at all which are bewildering. Season on the line, perfect weather, 50,000 supporters, playing a team around the same position on the ladder??? And they just don’t show up at all??? And they do this repeatedly.
I don’t think this is about team selection or skill level or game plan. This is about the coaching staff being able to mentally prepare a group of people to compete and perform together when the occasion requires it. The failure to do so on an almost weekly occurrence starting from late last year is appalling.

Not Freo related but this absolutely sh*ts me to tears. How can players be plucked out of a competition on the eve of finals? I guess any league that isn’t the AFL or AFLW can go f*ck themselves then?

Update on this for those playing at home. After finishing second on the ladder and having one of their better players poached by an AFLW club the week before finals, South Freo are knocked out in straight sets. Absolute f*cken joke.

Strengths are weaknesses.

When Darcy is as dominant as he is, oppo either shark his taps or just monster our dudes as soon they receive. As soon as.

We not only need to mix up the midfield brigade, Darcy needs - if he does dominate like he was yesterday - to start mixing up his taps. Take clean possession, whack it forward. Do what Sandi had to when he was too dominant.

How on earth could anyone thing this is a serious football team?
Most of these players are as weak as piss. Getting monstered by Carlton so far.
Well you know how pathetic your club is when the only positive you have is you make money when your club loses.

So glad I put $50 on Carlton at $2.

Anyone can find any positives about losing to eagles in the Derby late in the season , please let me know

It might result in an extension of Simpson's contract?

My vent is at the list managers who decided that we could lose Mundy, Logue, Acres, Tucker and Meek in one off season and still be competitive. Our team is too young, too small and too inexperienced to be competitive, look at how good Carlton’s fringe players look when as a team they are all bigger, stronger and more seasoned than our blokes.
I excluded Lobb because Jackson is an upgrade.

Our fringe players also look miles better when the team plays well. That's what fringe players do. Just look at Carlton a few weeks ago.

True, but my point is we lost too many players with 5+ preseasons under their belt, and replaced them with Corbett, Emmett, Wagner and JOM.
Our kids in MJ, Erasmus and Worner may get there in the end but right now we are way down on the team we were last year, and the decision earlier in the year that JOM got the nod over Brodie seems mystifying to me. Mundy and Brodie replaced by JOM and MJ is a massive downgrade currently.

Anyone feel like they are in a toxic relationship with this club?
Wish I could go back to a few years ago where I mentally checked out. Would still watch every game, but would move on from losses the very next day. Freo starting to show something in 2021 and then exploding out of the blocks in 2022 got me way more emotionally invested in this club than I wanted to be.
