Recency bias and all , but this is the most disappointing season ever (aside from losing a gf)

Agree! I think its because never before have we had top 4 served on a silver platter like this year , know that our best can get it done but just keep losing when it matters. The realisation that we are pretenders and not actually anywhere near a flag threat with this current list.

what are we at , 5 games lost after a 3 qtr time lead ? 6 games by 13 points or less. and the fact no one seems to want to win it. depressing

My cousin knew him quite well - a mixture of injuries, mental health (grief and personal) and immaturity.

Where does the drugs BS come from people? Is it proven? I had never heard anything like that.

Believe it or not the culture at Freo wasn't at an all time peak when he joined - Neale had just left due to culture issues, and there were a handful of players on the list lacking real integrity. Also, there were coaches and assistants who just didn't connect with the players at all (they've all since left the club).

When he was let go he really was at his absolute lowest, and his turnaround in Sydney came from enormous personal discipline, and it was really only possible in a non-footy state, because he's completely incognito over there. It's actually quite an incredible story, it's just unfortunate that Freo (as often occurs) is on the wrong side of the narrative.

My only remaining ponderance is could such a reinvention have been possible if he remained at Freo? What if the club persevered with him, the culture at Freo from all reports is elite and mature now - maybe he would've turned things around and become the goal-kicking beast he is now.

Will never know.
I'll answer the drugs stuff.

so, I'm from the countryside and thus when i went to uni i stayed at college for 2 years. colleges are funny places. 200 young people (from mine, probs 1000 college row). during any one weekend about half that number will venture out and party. conveniently some will go to the same clubs as the afl football players. most of its coincidence and a numbers game. after all most freo players also party on a friday/saturday night.

thus if someone is consistently doing something. college will know. and the rumour mill will kick into overdrive.

when jesse got traded back. quite a few people saw him getting real loose. nobody saw drugs. but he was having a fair go at going crazy. could have just been dismissed as a bloke having a good time. but some were speculating maybe a little more than that.
I think he was seen a few times like that. so i think the rumour started up at colleges tbh. eagles mates giving you shit about your star recruit was giving his injury recovery his very best,..etc.
plus he had been in perth at previous offseasons. where he might have done the same thing.

Almost 13 years to the day that I wrote ....

We don't need 20 threads talking about how shyte we were - put it in here.

Season 6 Vent GIF by SpongeBob SquarePants

The worst thing about this season, as has been said before, we had the easiest ride this season, they couldn't have made it any easier for us to lock up a top 4 position, people can sit here and say fixturing or the umpires ****ed us over at points, neither are valid excuses they're the coward's excuse.

We have nobody to blame but ourselves. We choked finals, we choked a top 4 spot. Season was wasted.

We blew this year at selection.
Bringing back Pearce too early.
Playing Darcy when he’s clearly cooked despite Reidy being a more than adequate first ruck.
Persisting with free rides for Banfield, O’Meara over Brodie, Erasmus, Simpson.
Not bringing NOD back earlier.
Too conservative.

I think JL can really coach but the selection has no dare or imagination.

When our coach constantly says we had a crack, he's so proud of us and we don't focus on results, scoreboards, etc. we get exactly what we deserve. We need to acknowledge that we failed again when the game is on the line, the match ups we had on Hogan were deplorable and we put up with excuse after excuse week after week. The last few weeks our pressure rating has been poor, Look at tonight's showdown, when the game was on the line in the third quarter the Power lifted to like 240 or something.

Have to do disagree about the easiest ride...playing in Alice Springs, Tasmania, Sydney again while Essendon, Carlton, WB and Magpies have like nearly 7 or 8 game in a row in Melbourne. Gather round again, one less home game than the SA clubs and then we finish with games against Cats, Giants and Power while others have Eagles, NM and Tigers.

Yep, 100%

Banners has cost us 3 games yet is in every week despite his best barely making the grade because he’s versatile. I think getting Baker is worth three wins a year as he can take his spot.

Blew our chances again today.
Banfield's efforts were just not up to the level I'm afraid, he was tripe.
There was others but he was consistently no good at footy today.
Don't want to rant and rave too much, so I think I'll just leave it at that.

I’m all for losing, if there’s consequences and players coming in.
But the last three weeks? Worner, Tabs gets dropped. That’s it.

JOM gets through life, Switkowski ‘pressure’ is amazing for no goals.

Have to be hard calls. Banfield, JOM, Switta needs to be dropped this week. Instead the token of NOD for Banfield perhaps and that’s if.

Brodie will not have played a single AFL game this season. Not one. How is that even remotely okay?

Would love to know what info/juicy secret JOM has on Jl to get picked every week. 15 disposals. Really? At 30.

Even if we win next week we can still get knocked out of finals. ****ing atrocious end to the season I'm really sick of this team letting us down like this every ****ing year.

Things that have pissed me off this yr. Bullpiss umpiring against Carlton. Amiss constantly getting scragged ,while a slight breeze blows on the likes of Curnow and Mackay and its a free. Letting west coasts midfield destroy us. Constantly playing idiotic footballers while the likes of Brodie sit in the wafl. Awful goal kicking. Watching teams put a loose man behind a contest and throwing the ball to them. Having to travel all over the country while the vfl darlings stay home for months at a time. Biased VFL commentary. Awful team selection. Lack of mongrel and grit determination. And finally Longmuirs inability to adapt and the tedious ad nauseum media tripe

Remember writing on this board about 3 years ago that you will know freo are ready to play finals football and contend for the flag when players like Hughes, Aish and Banfield have been moved out of the 22 and are back at Peel, having been replaced by superior players.
Some of that has happened but not enough.
Starting to think JOM should be added to that list too.

I have to agree with E Shed above too - massive questions over JL team selection. Why so conservative?
NOD was a breath of fresh air in the final quarter yesterday. Why wait till the season has gone town the toilet to give him a look in? Peel watchers say he’s been great for weeks now.

Then there is the whole Reidy/Darcy debacle. Jeez Reidy would have been handy against meek in Launceston wouldn’t he? Or against Stanley last week or Draper the week before.
It’s like a selection has to be overwhelmingly obvious to the point it’s impossible to ignore before this match committee makes it.

As for subbing Fyfe out instead of Banfield. What game were they watching?
Even the Banfield supporters on here would surely agree his confidence was shot in the last quarter and he should have been pulled.
When I think of how Erasmus was so ruthlessly dispatched to peel after three quarters of footy and one over-carrying howler that was really a marginal call by the umpire, it seems there is different rules for different players.
