Very early Phantom draft.

Is Steve Freemantle from Oakleigh a chance this year to get drafted??? I know he is small, many say to small however he has very silky skills, and is extremely fit?

Xavier Ellis is a gun, a class act has a beautiful accurate kick on him hits targets consistently. Nice height, reads the play very well and is a ball magnet due to his superb judgement.Has been playing a sweeping role across the HB line in the TAC Cup and setting the play up and providing run.But he can also play midfield and this is where I think he will play in the AFL. I rate him Top 5 atm.

Thanks for that, Ragingbull.

You mention he has good smarts, skills, run, and is a good height for a midfielder, sounds like just what Hawthorn would be wanting.

Presumably we're talking outside midfielder here, does he have reasonable pace to go with his run?

Liekly type and playing well. But gee, is that was Essendon needs another mid size forward that is not quick (Jobe Watson)? Sheeds loves the history of it all though.

Just proves that its a long way out from picking this stuff. It would depend where they finish up and who they can get to meet their needs with the earlier picks, will they trade for more picks, who knows? If they get want they want earlier then Neagle may be a logical pick up. To many ifs to be committing this early.

dont shoot the messenger just passing on what i have heard.
agree with u though, its not really what essendon are crying out 4 at the minute. and his attitude has 2 be questioned 2 say the least.... aka cupidoll like

Looking over the names there briefly, I can say that the squad is not as good as last years. Don't forget the 2004 side had blokes like Griffen, Monfries, Eckermann, Meyer who have all debuted already and are impressing.

However, that aside the list there is still good with some quality names again.

The standouts are:

Travis Varcoe - Small but extremely quick aboriginal midfielder who has good evasive skills. Has a very good junior record and if he adds a little more to his frame should get taken in the 1st round, if not early 2nd round.

Sam Elliott - Class act, good onballer, gets plenty of the ball and uses it well. Polished player all round and is a certain first rounder I'd think.

Tom Redden - Touted as a early draft pick last year but wasn't selected. Tall lean midfielder/utility who can certainly add versatility to ones side.

Shannon Hurn - Built like a keg for his age, very strong midfielder or key defender with a no nonsense attitude. His mature body and ability in his given positions should see him go very early in the 1st round.

Don't have time to comment on the rest but others to look out for are:

Tom Hurley - gun centreman/rover

John Cheetham - Good KPP prospect

Scott Purling

Ben Arbon (potential gun here)

Sugars

Bennett

Also gotta add that Bryce Gibbs isnt in that academy....but he is just about assured to play with the Under 18's. He has the most potential out of anyone ive seen for his age. He is 16, played his first SANFL game last weekend and almost dominated. Something like 11 kicks 3 marks 10 handballs 1 goal..freak.

Thunderstruck,

Any info on Tyson Wait (Port Adelaide) im hearing some good reports on him, I know he has played senior footy in the country since he was 15? and he has dominated. Height? Weight? Position? Any info would be great.

Mark Dolling is also a good player is a super quick elusive small forward who has also played senior footy in the country and played quite well. I think he will get drafted.

Will be the steal of the draft more than likely, is an awesome player and if he had not broke his leg last year, would of been top 10 draftees this year but will probably go around 20-30 just because of this. Captained the australian team when they played in perth, leads by example with his actions and is probably easily the toughest player ive ever played with. So dont be surprised if this bloke catches you by suprise, when he makes afl.

Very very few and many of the other regs on this board seem to be saying the same thing. Lots of rovers, lots of good triers, some guys who you'd normally take in the 40+ range ... but stand out elite guys that you'd really target? Haven't seen many.

As for top-20 mids in Victoria?

Marc Murphy (Oakleigh) is a Luke Power type but is f/s to Brisbane and so out of the discussion.

Heath Hocking (Eastern) going to be a midfield grunt like Chad Fletcher or Jarred Crouch. Probably not of interest to Collingwood, Carlton or Hawthorn who are pretty stocked there and want pace.

After that I don't think there would be many where you'd curse under your breath on draft day saying, "damn we missed a good one there". (Up to this point of the season of course - things change).

It'd be handy to have a Deledio & Tambling on your list :)

Good post and I would think this order would run closer to the mark.

One query regarding Marcus Drum though.

Do you think Richmond would overlook him for another midfielder, given that they could do with a strong tall marking presence at CHB and considerable uncertainty surrounds their tall kpp stocks?

Also, what's your view on Xavier Ellis?

I have heard some good things about him and he would appear to be a player that would suit the Hawks' needs, but I notice Weaver didn't touch on him.

I agree.

I would think Richmond will target talls early in the draft.

Speaking to Col Sylvia on the weekend and said he had been quizzed about Benny Duscher who is now playing pioneers . Played in the seniors locally here and made a lot of his teammates including me look ordinary despite his slight frame. His form was awesome averaging 25 in the first three TAC games until he injured his ankle. Was right to go last week but had Vic trials. Not sure if he'll go high but if he can stay consistent i think he'll be a good chance at getting drafted somewhere.
