In the likes of Hodge, Mitchell & Williams the Hawks already have a good young core. Franklin and Roughead are going to be very good KPP's for the next decade whilst the the likes of; Lewis, Thurgood and co. are exicitng.

Trading Hay in a already weak spine comes close to guaranteeing a bottom 4/2 finsh in a 2006 draft which is already rated as a very good one. Whilst 3 or 4 years at the bottom hurts it helps seeing such promsing kids come though. Add 5 of the top 22 dtaft picks, including 3 & 6 and thats a very exciting young list.

Fantastic time to be a Hawks fan? Great list a few years down the track?

What happens if Franklin, Hodge, Roughead, etc are poached by other clubs?

That is what kept the bulldogs down for such a long period of time, players do not want to play out their careers at clubs that do not win. When Collingwood and Essendon start to offer them mega-bucks to cross the road that is when you will see how much the kids really want to be there.

Player retention is critical for success.

EXCUSE ME??? The only two players to walk out on our club lately (i mean 5 0r 6 years) are Luke Penny and Nathan Brown. What kept us down was the worst coach in AFL/VFL history.

If Hawthorn fans have learnt anything its that we dont judge ourselves on potential. The picks we have this year are nothing but a large stack of poker chips, we'll see what comes from it.

The positives that Hawthorn fans have is we are changing the culture and moving away from the past. Five wins this year yes, but a vast improvement on the years before that.

We feel we are moving forward and hopefully our recuriters will do a good job in selecting players this year, and probably next, that are not only skillfull but hard at it.

I would still consider next year close to failure if we end up with priority picks, we must improve on what we did this year and if a little bit of luck falls our way we will.

poaching is rampant these days. players have no loyalty. just look at how geelong/west coast and most of all, st kilda are struggling to keep there young and exciting lists together.

nope..

the go home factor is the only real issue.

theres the odd nathan brown type, who will leave for money.
maybe the simmonds type, who will leave for a long contract.

but the go home factor is the only major reason young players want to leave clubs.

hawks should be fine.

The Hawks will start being a winning team when they get around to convincing themselves theyre not a losing team.

Honestly though... what kind of guidance is VDB able to give them?

(no this is not a troll, its my opinion).

What happens if the entire list is killed in a plane crash? What happens if a tiger get loose at Waverly and mauls the squad?

The Hawks won't be down for too long. We were competative in a great number of our games this season just gone and I expect us to remain so next season. I give our players credit for being intelligent enough to see where the club is heading and for them to remain because of it. The club has an excellent core of young players aged between 21-25 already coming through and it won't be long before the next generation ('05-'06-'07) picks up the slack.

As long as Hawthorn can remain under the cap the team will be perennial contenders for a great number of years.

I hate to break it to you, you have been down a lot longer than 5 or 6 years.

The reason the bulldogs are moving up the ladder again is because they have reduced/stopped the bleeding in recent years.

Like the Kangaroos you mean? Nah, the Kangaroos only take our dead wood.

Thompson and Hay have little to do with your future, it is Hodge, Williams and co that will determine if your break out of the bottom four or do not.

I do not think we have targetted any required player, Collingwood does that buy offering the massive contracts to high profile players and stars.

Thompson and Hay are not stars, they are just competitive players. The threat to the hawks will come from the fat-cat clubs that will go after key players hard when their contracts expire.

everitt and crawford should be ready in a few years Tas, get those top picks ready.

You may joke about it, but you are keeping two guys at the club that don't want to be there. They will do more harm than good there. Not that I want them at my club.

I hope so. I want to see the hawks be a strong team, well, I'd rather they be competitive now than strong in the future. Not sure if they will be strong in the future or just competitive, time will tell what comes out of all these drafts.

But you do need to retain the players, not just the stars. You can't have a list of 20 stars, salary cap does not allow for that. You need good fringe level players aswell.

You can afford to lose the older ones, it is the younger ones that you can not afford to.

Everitt, may of wanted to leave, Crawford is absolutley loving it at the moment, he is refreshed and he likes the look of the where list is going with some very promissing players coming through, he was given his chance to leave this year but he decided to stay.

It isn't a good time to be a Hawthorn supporter yet. There are going to be several lean years while these young high draft picks of theirs become good senior players. It might be a good time to be a Hawthorn supporter by about 2010.

Suddenly you know Shane Crawford well enough to be able to speak on his behalf? Well thanks for telling us. Any other inside information you care to share with us?

For all the negative stuff there is some positve stuff in there, we raised 300 000 to wipe off our loss this year from the "Brown and Gold in the Black" night a couple of nights ago, finally something club has done right for the year-admin wise, we have some youngsters comming through, we have a new president with a new outlook, I think we are turning the corner.

I cant see us being down for to long, we were competitive this year, next year maybe be either slightly better of worse, depending on 2nd year blues, but I think we will go alright in 2007.

I tend to agree.

Hawks will go as you have said, although i tend to think slightly better next year than '05.

Hay wasn't a star this year, however he will be a bit of a loss (here come the sighs of " i knew a North supporter would say that") only because you now have to slot someone into FB. Just like North tried to do this year, and we bled because of it.

Roughhead played a few good games in defence late in the year, so maybe he might get the nod.

The Hawks definitely have some talent coming through, it will only be a matter of consistency.
