VFL 2021

Feels like a clearcut top 5 and then a bunch after that. Footscray, Southport, Casey, Geelong and Williamstown look the goods right now. Box Hill, Werribee, Carlton, Sydney and Brisbane will probably compete for those last 3 spots, whilst the other 12 won't be great.

Footscray v Casey next week will likely be one of the best VFL games of the year. Potentially even better than a lot of AFL games this year. It should really be the marquee Thursday night game on Fox Footy next week.

Southport will pound the Northern Bullants at home next week and register another huge win after recording 83, 109 and 107 point victories over the last three weeks. This will likely get Southport to first place on the VFL ladder leading into their marquee Thursday night Fox Footy fixture against Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium the following week, which they will also probably win by a hefty margin. This will be the game Southport will announce itself to the Victorian footy public as a true second tier heavyweight team at the national level.

Geelong have already played this round and Williamstown have the bye. Both have winnable games next week against Collingwood and Essendon respectively. As is the case every year, the standalone teams have a big advantage when it comes to the continuity their teams can build throughout a season so that likely means Southport and Williamstown (as well as potentially Box Hill and Werribee) will continue to win most games and injuries at the AFL level will determine whether Footscray, Casey and Geelong continue their dominance.

Presuming the top 4-5 standings don't change too much between now and the finals, it'll be very interesting to see how the Victorian teams deal with having to travel to Southport to play a final. Travelling interstate is not something Victorian VFL teams are used to doing whereas the NEAFL teams have been travelling interstate every second/third week for close to a decade and are well versed in the situation. A cut throat interstate final on a warm August/September day on the Gold Coast could really wreak havoc for the Vic teams and will likely be a huge advantage for Southport, especially if they finish top 2 and get the double chance at home. I know there's a long way to go but it would be pretty wild if Southport managed to win the VFL premiership in their first season in the competition.

Could this competition become a tier structure or would AFL clubs be too afraid of being played below state league powerhouses?

I’m meaning include teams like Norwood, Peel Thunder etc and then the top half play in division 1 with the div 2 premiers going up and so forth?

Love your insight as always GC2015.

Can only see them losing two or three more games for the rest of the year. They will put Gold Coast/Frank/Coburg to the sword. Two matches vs. Brisbane which they should take.

The game @ Willy should be awesome. Both teams in great form, some predicted the Seagulls to fall off the cliff given their outs this year but I was not one of them. Granted their draw has not been extremely difficult but they have done what they have needed to do.

Will the Bullants win a game? Depressing times down at Preston, would be hard to roll out of bed on a Monday morning after a 25 goal thumping. Werribee could have won by 200 to be honest.

It would be good if a little more thought was put into the schedule. The Thursday night Foxtel matches have an average winning margin over 60 points and all of these results were totally predictable. This week will likely be more of the same.

This was the first time this season that the Bullants were busted open completely, from what I have seen. They've mostly hung tough in the other matches but have been unable to stay with other classier sides when they move through the gears in 5 or 10 minute bursts.

The fixture has been rough too - their 5 games have come against 5 of the current top 7 in the league. Third placed Southport awaits this weekend, so there is no let up.

The bullants have been defensively tight and more competitive than the scoreboard suggests before this round. Home crowds have been decent, lets hope the novelty doesn't wear off/heavy losses don't lead to a big drop off.

To make any non professional state competition a national competition during a pandemic has got to be one of the worst decisions. Like honestly, state lockdowns were guaranteed. How was this comp ever going to work?!

Even without a pandemic how could top-up players with normal jobs be expected to get to another state for a Thursday night game... Farcical.

To be fair each team has like 4 byes and the fixture is a complete joke so even if they don't play at all for one/two weeks they'll still get games in make up a season

The Thursday night stuff is a real headscratcher for sure. Whoever is doing the fixturing for both the AFL and VFL at HQ this year has gotten just about everything wrong.

Essendon have taken 29 players to Perth which doesn't leave many back in Melbourne for their VFL fixtures. That's a lot of top up players.

With no AFL VFL crossover for a while, you would think most Melbourne based AFL clubs would separate more players away from their VFL squad to cover injuries. Big impact on the VFL and local footy which will be providing top up players to the VFL.

The AFL/VFL crossover renders it irrelevant I'm pretty sure.

tend to agree especially with the mystery case in Melbourne today. I reckon it’s likely that lockdown will get extended for a few days.

massive advantage to the northern teams in my opinion being able to train

11 new cases now today

This lockdown will go a lot longer than a week and combined with Queensland border closure

Hard to see how VFL competition will resume this year.

Obviously games postponed this weekend and most likely next weekend (Queens Birthday weekend) for teams in Victoria

I am hearing though the VFL season will resume for 6 teams in NSW and Qld. Not sure how that works

Surely the season resuming for the 6 teams in Qld and NSW just means a series of practice matches between. Hard to see how they can play for points when the other 16 teams are in lockdown.

Two H&A season games confirmed for this weekend:
Sydney vs Southport, Tramway Oval, Saturday 10:05am Streamed on Kayo Freebies
Aspley vs Brisbane, Graham Rd, Saturday 1:05pm Streamed on Kayo Freebies
