Goals : 2 Walker, 2 Corrigan, Cowan, Selwood, Simpson, Smith, Barham.

The only AFL listed players that really stood out in my mind were Byrnes and West. Byrnes played in the midfield and seemed to injure himself towards the end, and had an icepack strapped to his calf after the game. The forwardline was very tall, with Walker, Vardy, Simpson and Blake all spending a lot of time down there. Cowan was alright, but he didnt find the ball that often, same goes for Schroeder.

Simpkin didn't really stand out, or do anything special.

Despite Walker's 2 goals he didn't really do much else, except dropping a chest mark in the goalsquare, always made a contest though.

Spent most of the time in the cats forward pocket, so I didn't get a great view of the other end, but Bathie seemed very solid down the other end, good disposal and reading of the play.

Vardy barely touched it, but he played the game pretty exclusively at full forward, and in the second half delivery was pretty bad. Blake was alright around the ground wise, and took some marks in the forward 50, but I can't see him having any success there in the AFL. West roamed around half back, and was very clean and took a lot of marks, didn't spend any time in the ruck.

Casey won the midfield battle in the second half, and their forward line delivery was superior to ours. Probably should have been a bigger margin, but they missed some easy shots.

For the VFL players Corrigan and Barham stood out, and Both should have had a few more goals as they missed about 3 sitters between them in the last.

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Thought Walker showed something.. West was dominant down back. Blake was all at sea in the ruck. McLean tried hard, Bathie was brought back to Earth a bit this week. Vardy is an excitement machine. Barham can't kick. We overdid the handball. 'Harry' Corrigan is a very solid player. Cowan doesn't seem switched on.. some basic mistakes and lacks defensive presence. Casey just sat back and got the rewards, we over committed and over attacked.. which gave them numbers and time

i'll try to write up a proper review in the morning

Apparently he did very little. What makes you say the above concerning Vardy on today's form?

I am not having a dig at you. I have high hopes for the kid, so I am interested in your comment. What did you see that impressed you?

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

no, he didnt have a great game.. we got 1 goal after the 18 or 20min mark of the 2nd quarter.. but he tries to create something.. throws himself into the game.. goes for the screamer. He's at least Blake's height too.

Honestly, very few people did anything today

I noticed in the very short time he had on ground at the Carlton practice match that Vardy has a nice dose of aggression. Keen on the contest once he crosses that white line. Thats a good start for me.

Plus he is a very big lad with a nice leap (in the one centre bounce he contested v Hampson he easily out jumped the carlton ruck).

Wouldn't say Hampson would be an Olympic highjump hopeful, but get your point, he's very tall, our Vardys' got a spring to go with his height.
His second year at Cats, maybe he should be given a chance in the forwards if Pods repeats the 2 possesson game that he had at Freo next week!
I'd prefer to see Vardy play a home game first up.
Good to hear about Walker, very young tall, but we need to be searching for future replacements right now.
Brown and Vardy have got to make inroads this year, IMO, we've got to bring them on, they've had time.

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

It should be pointed out that Hogan and Ben Johnson didn't play together with Gillies who went with the seniors to WA. Add Scarlo's suspension, Mitch Brown out and the 3 late changes and the VFL side is a lot better off.

Vardy competed well when the ball came in but it was more of a matter how the ball came in. Casey dropped a man back after we kicked our second so on most occasions we were out numbered up forward. As per reports, Vardy seems to have grown up to the 200cm mark and hasn't had trouble adding size to his frame either.

West was clearly best on for us. Marked everything that came his way playing accross half back and moved around the ground extremely well. Didn't ruck at all from what I saw so I would suggest that he's being groomed as more of a KPP than a ruck. Very impressive.

Byrnes was solid. Showed some dash and contested well. Would benefit from another game or two in the VFL. You'd like to see him dominate first.

Cowan and Schroder were both solid in the midfield. Seemed to get a fair bit of the footy and use it reasonably well. Would benefit from some senior mids around them.

Simpkin was thereabouts but was more impressive in his NAB Cup games.

Walker provided some good leads but just didn't grab some he should have (even though some were under pressure).

That's pretty much it apart from the fact that drinking cold VB cans at the footy is underrated although the benefit of a stubby holder is a must (a lesson learnt on a coolish night last year). Why oh why are we forced to drink out of plastic cups at AFL games???

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

K, sorry.. no photos as just at the moment I can't justify spending a small fortune to get a flash for my DSL which I would be able to use at the football.

Amazing venue first of all.. they need to play regional challenge matches here.. Fev went into the Geelong rooms before the game with a gift.. laughing off his send off, he actually seems a really decent bloke

I spent a bit of time trying to get my camera to work, and wasn't in the best location to see everything that way going on (criticism of this ground at night, the players seem far away)

A thought or two on each of the players who pulled on the blue and white hoops followed by where we lost the game

12) Trent West (89 games, 38 goals) - dominated at Centre Half Back, on top early to give Geelong a great leg to stand on at half time. Just able to read the ball better than the Scorpions forward, and take a good contested mark. One of the few to remain strong after half time.

15) Jordan Schroder (3 games, 0 goals) - showed a glimpse of something. Very strong bodied midfielder who busts packs open and is good by foot. Will be better for the showing.

16) Dawson Simpson (48 games, 7 goals) - I think he was our best ruckman on the night, and was a lot better at ground level. Rested forward and worked hard early for a goal. Bit off AFL level on tonight's showing however.

17) Shannon Byrnes (62 games, 67 goals) - will be better for the run, however i would not bring him up to the AFL on the showing. Added a lot of composure to the very young midfield, but was lacking his usual forward presence.

18) Josh Cowan (15 games, 3 goals) - long way off AFL standard just at the moment. He takes a great diving mark, and never stops working.. but his attack on the ball and decision making is questionable at times, especially under a bit of pressure.

24) Mark Blake (55 games, 18 goals) - started full forward again, but failed to get on the scoreboard or really impose himself. Good in the bounce, but around the ground in hit outs and one on one was SLAUGHTERED by Max Gawn who could be one to watch

36) Nathan Vardy (18 games, 16 goals) - centre half forward who is a genuine excitement machine.. needs to do the basics a bit better, but loves taking a leap and will get mark of the year in his career. Is taller than Blake now, just needs better delivery into the forward line to get more opportunities

42) Josh Walker (1 game, 2 goals) - dislocated his finger in the warm up which I feel impacted on his marking throughout the night, it was a great first up appearance for the big man. Works hard, and is a good kick. Will be better for the run.

46) Joffa Simpkin (42 games, 32 goals) - bit down on his preseason form, but given the game, did okay. Works hard to create off the wing/ half forward and never stops trying. Will play AFL this year, but may need to wait. Offers good composure and never seems rushed with decisions.

47) Ryan Bathie (1 game, 0 goals) - brought back to Earth a bit this week, good by foot.. but swamped by the volume of footy going in and the high leaping Casey forwards. Athletic, but needs to make his tackles stick. Provided him with a good learning curve.

50) Matt Firman (79 games, 27 goals) - welcome return to the former captain. Tried hard on the half back line, and started the first half well. Adds a great presence and wasn't beaten.

51) Troy Selwood (1 game, 1 goal) - coped the irr of the Casey fans who noted he dropped his head in an attack on the ball more than once. Looked a bit rusty out there, lacking a bit in his influence on the game. Composure looked a bit off too as he rushed a few of his disposals.

52) Jackson Hollmer (51 games, 8 goals) - first half was good, providing a good contest down back and good with his run out of the backline. Second half was swamped and shown up by the volume of footy and height of the kicks.

53) Jaxson Barham (46 games, 27 goals) - got a bit of the ball, but as his Casey opponents reminded him constantly.. especially when he had his shots at goal, he can't kick. Great attack on the man and ball, but is too often let down by his disposal.

54) Andrew McLean (40 games, 2 goals) - second to West in influence down back. Really good set of hands, and clean disposal.. looks like he's got a lot of time with all his disposal. Will have a big year.

56) Casey Tutungi (8 games, 0 goals) - was named in the best, but I didn't really notice him. Was shown up in the second half along with the rest of the midfield.

57) Mark Corrigan (15 games, 7 goals) - one of our best. Tries hard all day, and offered a lot across the ground with a strong set of hands and good skill by hand and foot. 'Harry' or 'H' is set for a big year and just gets the job done. Was the only forward half player to really step up after half time.

58) Jackson Sheringham (27 games, 13 goals) - started well early, getting into a lot of plays in the first quarter in particular before going missing in the second half. Not a flashy looking midfielder, but showed early he can offer a bit.

59) Tom Maas (4 games, 1 goal) - showed preseason he is one to watch, but was not noticeable during this game and spent large chunks of time on the bench.

60) Anthony Biemens (11 games, 0 goals) - did a few nice things early on, but the game overran him and made a few tired mistakes later in the game.

63) Garreth Phillips (1 game, 0 goals) - very quiet debut, few good touches.. but struggled to cope with the pressure Casey applied in the midfield and suffered from Geelong's game plan

64) Anthony Elliott (1 game, 0 goals) - gave a good account of himself early before going missing along with many of his teammates. Showed some composure at times, and seems to have footy smarts.

66) Isaac Baker (1 game, 0 goals) - one to watch. Despite his 186cm height, he was thrust into the key forward role at times.. failed to have any real impact, but showed glimpses in how he reads the play.

Our gameplan... Paul Hood has match day coaching duties, and would not be happy with what he saw. A lot of elements from the AFL last year with the skill not being up to it.. we over handball, and put teammates under pressure which the outside players of Casey capitalised on.
We were also first to the ball, and attacked in numbers.. however a wrong bounce, or slight fumble and we were exposed as Casey just sat back and waited for our mistakes by the third quarter.
The cats players at the huddles knew what was going on, but anything they tried in that second half failed to work..

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Have to see more, but can see a Baker - Menzel comparison

Schroder good call.. but I want to see more defensive work from him in a tagging role for that.

Vardy..I'd say latter stages of this year.. he just doesn't get his hands on it enough yet. He's one of those key talls who can be damaging with 8 touches.. but 8 touches at VFL = 3 at AFL = too few

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Brown was at the ground and didnt appear in discomfort.. maybe it was just precautionary.. and with the talls we have, dont think we'll be risking anyone unneccessarily

Maybe we've found an alternative for Mackie?

THanks for all that.

RaptorR said that Blake was good in the ruck but SLAUGHTERED around the ground. You seem to disagree with this. Was Blake bad, good or indifferent?

Thanks again in advance :)

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Just as premise, I'm talking in the one on one contests, Gawn was close to BOG for me.. Blake should have more of a presence when he was on him

Yeah Gawn was definitely the dominant ruckman around the ground and beat Blake in that regard, but out of Blake, Vardy, and Simpson, Blake was the only one that really was able to link up around the ground. Not a great display by any means, just he seemed to get in the play a lot more around the ground then Vardy and Simpson. Probably could have done a bit better in the marking contests where, except for a great pack mark that wasn't paid, he had close to zero impact.

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

I think he got worked into it more, but when it hit the ground Dawson shone.. Blake lacked the second efforts..
and Vardy only spent 7 mins in the ruck to be fair to the kid :)

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Not really. We have Scarlett and Lonergan to return to the seniors still.

Mackie probably create better but West can give a chop out in the ruck. With a 3 interchange he well be more valuable.
I think he worth a go but some hard choices need to be made , and I suspect some toy's are going to be thrown out the crib if make them

Re: Casey Scorpions v Geelong, Casey Fields, 7:00PM Saturday 2 April

Thanks for the updates, everyone. I normally go to the Casey games (and catch up with Teach) but on Sat we were in Geelong visiting family for once! :)
