VFLW VFLW 2022 Season mega-thread

Remove this Banner Ad

We're just a week away from the start of the season, and while the fixture isn't really known at this stage we do know who our first opponent will be

The good thing about the season being nearly upon us is the chance for those not selected in the AFLW to still run out in a competitive match - even if it's only for a half season cross over. Hopefully it'll present the opportunity for those currently on the fringes to push for selection later in the season

As more info about the season is known - such as the fixture, we'll update this post

Full fixture is here....

Can I laugh at the fixture - we start the season with 6 home matches & end the season with 6 away matches

Week 7 is our first away match & a week later we return home for our last home match; that seems a bit unbalanced

No venues have been set. Those are not confirmed as Geelong's home or away games just randomised until they set venues.

No venues have been set. Those are not confirmed as Geelong's home or away games just randomised until they set venues.

Based on this from the club, it seems they are confirmed as home games with only the venue & times of those matches to be confirmed:

Geelong's rebel VFL Women's season is set to kick off with a string of games on home turf.

While details are still being confirmed for matches, the Cats are set to host Carlton in their season-opener next weekend, beginning a run of six games at home to launch the season.

The run of home games gives the Cats a good chance to start the season strongly, but means they will be on the road for seven of their final eight matches.

Ground unavailability due to the overlap of VFLW and cricket seasons means many teams will be unable to play at their home ground in the early stages of the season.

Odd, I stand corrected

For comparisons, here's our list from the 2021 season - 26 players below:

Geelong
- Breanna Beckley
- Sachi DeGiacomi

Michelle Fedele
Natalie French
- Claudia Gunjaca
Erin Hoare
Lucy Martin
Emma Oliver
Rebecca Pearce
- Breanna Pratt
Laura Ryan
Tanacha Saunders
- Tamara Smith
Tahlia Tatlock
- Jamie Woollett
Aily McAuliffe
- Olivia Fuller

Development List
Sarah Elsworthy
- Annabel Johnson
- Chloe Leonard(i)?
- Ava McKeegan
Theresia Meissner

Renee Tierney
Annie Lee
Tess Craven

  • 3 of those players have subsequently found themselves on our AFLW list (bold red)
  • 2 development players have been upgraded to the main VFLW list (bold black)
  • 6 further players return for another year, including Ava McKeegan for a 2nd year on the development list (bold blue)
  • And then there's another 2 development players were drafted to other AFLW teams (italics & underlined)

Feels like we're doing something right with our VFLW list - there's a bit of turn over, but it's good to see fresh names and not what seems to be as much of a focus on recruits from other sports as we saw in our earlier seasons. and

And can see it's also acting as a pathway for the local youngsters with opportunities to come through the development list and step up the VFLW list or hear your name called out on draft night.

Seeing Boyd named in defence, isn't that something we tried in the VFLW with some success last year also? Kinda curious why at didn't try it AFLW level

Also good to see Barber, Williams & Remmos all named having not seen them in the top level yet this season - we knew Barber was returning from injury, but wasn't sure the situation with the other two, so curious to see how the trio go

The other player I'm looking forward to getting a good run at things is Skinner - a couple of injury interrupted years on our AFLW list, fingers crossed for a smoother run this year

Liv Barber with 8 possessions, 10 hitouts and 2 goals to half time. Get her in the AFLW team now!

On CPH1701 using BigFooty.com mobile app

In place of Caris, McWilliams or Darby?

Can we play Fuller, Darby & Barber in the same team?

The obvious choice would be McWilliams, right? Closest like-for-like match, since Phoebe doesn't do much rucking.

We'll see if Caris keeps her spot next week (it wasn't her worst game - but her obvious replacement is Fuller if they're just resting her) and Darby's been in good form this year.

To keep this more on track with VFLW, Gunjaca seems to have been pretty quiet? I've only seen patches and she's applying pressure like she always does, but not many touches or goals? (Maybe I missed them.)
