A 3rd WA side is possible. WA population should hit 3 million by 2030.
Why can they be combined?Do this and don’t introduce any more teams. Those 4 can definitely be combined imo.
Saints and Melbourne. Dogs and North seems more appropriate geographically.
you would be suprised.WC is the dominant club. Not sure many people would get on a new WA club.
With all due respect, Dockers have been an on field failure similar to why your side was an onfield failure from 2002-2022. Dockers have been poorly run and had bad luck.Fremantle (with all due respect) have pretty much being an on field failure since entering the league in 1995 .
We definitely don't need another WA team.
you would be suprised.
Again, 3 million people by 2030 or there abouts. So on average 1 million per club. Yet... 6.7 million people in Victoria.
People crap on freos trading and drafting in the early years. Yeah people crap on Gerard Neesham getting a lot of ex claremont blokes in freos playing squad.
No different to the Crows. Graham Cornes was the Crows coach in 1991. Cornes previous coaching job? Glenelg in the SANFL from 1986-1990. Chris McDermott was the crows captain in 1991-4 and Tony McGuiness was the crows captain in 1995-6. Both Blokes were from Glenelg in the SANFL.
With all due respect, Dockers have been an on field failure similar to why your side was an onfield failure from 2002-2022. Dockers have been poorly run and had bad luck.
I get crapped on from here about savouring every final the dockers played. Guess what? 18 sides. 8 finals spots and 10 teams miss out. when its a 20 team comp, its 8 teams in and 12 out. 40% chance to make finals each year.
Again... 6.7 million people live in Victoria. And if that 3rd WA side gets in and is owned and Run by the Western Australian football comission or the WAFC, then thats more money for the WA government.
Well.... How does freo have their fan base? you ever asked that question? How and where would they get a supporter base? That's the issue for expansion into an area where the market already has teams.
As I just posted... The 3rd WA club is More Likely to be Based North of the Swan River.Population wise perhaps. Money yes (although WA talks a lot about all the money they have but don't seem ever keen to spend it).
But what is the 3rd side's identity? WC is the general product - and Fremantle is different enough from Perth proper for it to work. But where is the 3rd side and what does it represent?
My assumption is that every team they add to Perth will get smaller and smaller, because each year the footy fans get more welded onto the existing clubs. I think you'd have to move to an academy system to get the new club into schools converting.Well.... How does freo have their fan base? you ever asked that question?
Back in 1987, the West coast eagles had support from the whole state of WA.
Then the dockers come into the comp in 1995. Now.... where does Freos fan base lie? Look at the swan river....
Yeah Gerrard Neesham gets bagged out for getting a lot of clarmont guys. Look at the top 10 picks in that 1991 draft. picks 1 and 3 to 7 were claremont guys. 3 or 4 of them were docker players in 1995. Claremont won the flag in 1991.
Not to many East Freo shark fans supported the dockers. A lot of South freo bulldog fans jumped on board. It did help that the dockers in their early years trained at South Freos home ground.
Peel Thunder came into the WAFL in 1996. They became the dockers ressies side in the WAFL in 2014.
My point is most of the dockers fans are based on the southern part of the swan River. Yep, South freo, East Freo and Peels home ground are located below the swan River.
But your question is, how does this 3rd WAFL club start of with a fan base? The are more liklely to steal some eagles fans.
Arena Joondalup (West Perths home ground) could be a start.
Bassadean oval is where Swan Districts home round is at.
Leederville oval is where East Perth and Subiaco trains.
Laithlain Park is Where the Perth Demons train and its also where the West coast Eagles train too.
So my bet the 3rd WA club would likely have their training base in Joondalup or Bassadean oval.
And this is probably the gist of the whole threadBack in 1987, the West coast eagles had support from the whole state of WA.
WC is the dominant club. Not sure many people would get on a new WA club.
And even if you do that, west coast eagles fan base will grow back again.Break WC in 2.
I'm sure all the WA fans who think that Vic clubs should be killed off 'for the good of the comp' would understand.
And even if you do that, west coast eagles fan base will grow back again.
And even if you do that, west coast eagles fan base will grow back again.
I guess that would be the test for wc fans.Neither team would be the west coast eagles.
Split the name, the colours, the song, the players, the management, the coaching...everything.
Better off just moving North to Tassie.Saints and Melbourne. Dogs and North seems more appropriate geographically.
But then you lose all the North Fans, HQ don't want that.Better off just moving North to Tassie.
All 20k of them. But then you lose all the North Fans, HQ don't want that.
I guess that would be the test for wc fans.
If the identity changed like that, would they jump off the wagon in protest, coz not our 'club'? Or would they back one of the 'new' clubs coz it represents WA?
More like a 100, and that's probably conservative, they've got around 40k membersAll 20k of them.
So when will they be able to stand on their own?More like a 100, and that's probably conservative, they've got around 40k members
Think they already debt clear or close to it, in any case, the reason HQ props up the small clubs is because they have enough paying fan and member base to make it not viable to be rid of them. North being the smallest if I am correct. So when will they be able to stand on their own?
Almost 100 years in the comp and still need propping up.Think they already debt clear or close to it, in any case, the reason HQ props up the small clubs is because they have enough paying fan and member base to make it not viable to be rid of them. North being the smallest if I am correct.
They learnt this lesson by losing a lot of Fitzroy fans when the Roys gave up their licensing and moniker to the bears. Sure, now you could say 'they've made up the numbers' but it was a long haul and let's be honest the bulk of that fan base wouldn't be rusted on fans like us in footy heartland. Less invested, less $ to HQ.
There's always gonna be small and big clubs, doesn't mean we should be rid of them, too many fans that'd get their nose outta joint.
So when will they be able to stand on their own?
We, as the Bulldogs aren’t ‘propped’ up by the AFL anymore. But Collingwood is ‘proper’ up by the most favourable corporate and player friendly fixture, year in year out. I would be more than happy to go back to a ‘draw’. Where the whole fixture is drawn out of a hat each year. Home one week away the next, but other than that it is totally random and fair. Instead of special dates and time slots for ‘proper’ up club’s always. So when will they be able to stand on their own?
And the AFL aren't some separate entity from the clubs - they collect $6 billion in TV rights on behalf of the clubs. What does stand on their own mean? North are profitable.
If you mean survive without AFL distributions, then there are not many clubs left.
