I've been impressed with the crowds West Coast have been attracting through this period they're going through and they're one of the financial powerhouses of the competition, 2 facts that are forgotten about a bit.

Brisbane asked for chartered flights for long interstate trips apparently, and that feels like a fairly realistic request.

It is not the footy world's fault if these teams don't market themselves skilfully.
They have as much opportunity as everyone else.
we just don't

I am well aware of the WC fan base having grown up there and being a supporter . The smaller vic clubs get a large amount from afl but obviously do not use it well enough.
so with all WC's resources, HTF are you in the position where you are?

you seem grossly ignorant of the hardships the smaller Melbourne clubs have dealt with in the last 30 years.

There's a reason why the smaller clubs are the only clubs selling home games, no amount of funds after the fact can repair the sustained denial of our ability to grow (stadium, lack of TV exposure, and fixture)

Sure we've stuffed up, but we simply are not allowed to be attractive to employees or players, we don't have a derby or showdown games, North is griefed every easter about the Good Friday game, we aren't gifted numerous Thursday/Friday games.

In a thread all about VICBias, there is a truckload of ignorance about where that privilege lays.

Are the rumours of an extension to the MCG Grand Final contract before the next Vic state election true? Would be epic just to see the melts in here.
What organisation would try and extent a contract that already exists 30? years into the future, unless they are getting some sort of bribe for it. Money loses value over time so $1 today is probably worth 40 cents in 2050.

Reported on Fox Footy

Out West, the Western Australian clubs are reportedly set to request an extra home game in 2025 amid uproar around the equality of the fixture.

Landsberger revealed the WA clubs were left “furious” after Gather Round made them travel an extra game, suggesting a winter festival in Perth from 2025 as a solution.

“(Dockers CEO) Simon Garlick and (Eagles CEO) Don Pyke sat down with Andre Dillon before the derby and the AFL has recently completed its club visits,” he added
“They want an extra game (in Perth). The AFL has a love affair with big events and festival type things.

“So I think the solution is to create this winter festival. On June 3 next year, Western Australia has Western Australia day.

“The idea is two Victorian clubs would fly over together and both West Coast and Fremantle would host those clubs. The next weekend it’s King’s Birthday weekend in Victoria and they play crossover games.

“So a bonus home game for them and sort of like a mini version of Gather Round stretched over two weekends. I think that’s a pretty good chance to happen.”
Maybe if Brisbane start complaining to the AFL we can get an extra free home game

The main thing i agree with WA teams in all of this is the fact that Gather Round gives SA teams a free home game. QLD teams are travelling the furthest to SA though.

You might need to talk to your big brothers in Victoria to help out? Regards our position at the moment, that is easy, what's been up must go down.
We will be up again in time.
I get it that there are smaller Vic clubs but in the past when you were vfl most of the clubs were the same yeah.?
Somewhere along the line you fluked it up and are now paying the price.

Love your subtle replies 😁 quietly lumping us in with Sydney and Hawthorn who travel an 1/8th of our distance.
Yes, Hawthorn is closer to Sydney and WC in terms of how many times they travel each year.
But you are the Master at shifting goalposts to protect the obvious advantages of your team.
I am well aware of Collingwood's advantages.

But unlike people like yourself, I understand who the disadvantaged clubs are. It is the smaller Melbourne based clubs and Marvel tenants - Carlton, Essendon, StKilda, Dogs, North and Melbourne.

I am well aware and maybe the big Vic's could shoulder some responsibility and help them out???
Maybe a few marquee games or such .
Be a little benevolent maybe?

Delighted to. They want more home games against Collingwood at the MCG because it's a cash cow. We've got 11 away games - we'll play them all against these Vic teams at the G.

Discounting at 5% (probably around what the AFL is paying on its loans), a dollar will be worth 23cents in 30 years time.

Marvel holds 53,000 people. Same as AO, a little less than Optus Stadium, more than the SCG, more than the GABBA, more than Metricon, way more than Sydney Showgrounds. It's a better viewing stadium than just about all of them. Not sue it's the handicap it's made out to be.

I hate that I have to defend Collingwood here but the reason that they don't travel a heap and play a shite load in Melbourne is because every club wants to play Collingwood as their home game. Clubs like St Kilda, North and Dogs would all sell their mothers into slavery to be able to have a home game at the MCG against Collingwood. It would make up a lot of their revenue.

We need to be realistic, there is a Vicbias because it is the largest market. Football state and highest population is the biggest reason of any bias. The AFL doesn't have a secret agenda, if Optus stadium was made to hold 110,000 people and Perth had a population on the same level as Melbourne, WA would start to get a lot more love. It is all about the cash for the AFL and that is what they follow.

The main issue is that the AFL is a major proponent of the idea that "Past performance is indicative of future performance" and isn't interested in striking whilst the Iron is hot with sides in Sydney and QLD being up and about. The AFL has that old dilemma of "To get plum timeslots you need to have lots of fans turn up" and the clubs respond "how can we get fans to turn up at absolutely shit timeslots in the first place". Its like the entry level job requiring 10 years of AI experience when ChatGPT only came out like 4 years ago.
Problem with your view that it’s all about the cash, why didn’t the VAFL at least put it out that it would at least consider offering the GF on a circulating basis to all the States to garner their interest and determine the financial benefits that this interest could translate into (simple commercial 101 if running a business that's all about the $$ wouldn't you think)?

What, did I hear you say … but a historical MCG GF attracts the TV viewers, which is what makes Fox, 7 pay the big dollars for the rights!

Mhhhhmmm, 2021 had the biggest TV audience in Melbourne ever for a GF (with 2 minnows playing) and great numbers Australia wide, which suggests we should either always play the GF out of Melbourne if it’s all about the $$$$ or at least test the waters regularly to see what the market will pay (i.e. WA running massive budget surpluses can afford to pony up more than other states in a financial black hole - here's to you Vic!).

Did you hear about this Covid thing where Victorians couldn't go out and do anything?

Travel to Melbourne is unavoidable so I'm looking at the other trips:

in 2024 draw,

Freo have 2 trips to SA, 0 trips to QLD and 2 trips to NSW this year
WC have 2 trips to SA, 1 trip to QLD and 0 trips to NSW this year

Brisbane have 3 trips to SA, 2 trips to WA - pretty much unheard of to have away games against all SA and WA teams in one season.

WC's draw in particular could have been a lot worse in terms of long interstate trips

Have people not realised that the AFL fixture already looks to reduce travel for the WA teams.

The next step is for the WA teams to do something themselves, and stay east for a week a couple of times a year.

That will reduce the amount of cross continent trips they make.

But no the WA wowser entitled position is to attempt to buy an away game and turn it into a home game. They sill still claim an "away disadvantage" though, because the Melbourne team chose to sell it.
