Man the self righteous dudes on the WCE board (and isn't that all of them? :p ) are so far in denial it's embarrassing.
I think I might get carded for having an opinion...

Anyway, as I see it, Vickery responded (badly) to a big elbow in the guts.

Which, according to the Eagirls, makes Cox the victim.

Still, they 've always been the same, haven't they?

Oh, and they didn't seem to mind Woosher sniping his way through an AFl career, did they?

Hey, let's not be too logical!

You'll forgive us for seeing the guy who was concussed and subbed off for the rest of the game as the victim.

Woosh played in a different era when bumps were allowed. If you want to bring up ancient history we could talk about Danny Southern getting a fine and no suspension for choking Sumich into unconsciousness?

Hey, let's not be too logical!

1. Denial about what?

Cox elbowed Vickery. It was ruled insufficient contact for a report. Maric said it happens all the time; ruckmen look for contact, enjoy it.

Vickery offered an unequivocal apology.

What are "we" in denial about.

2. A card? You were given 2 warnings by 2 mods for trolling. Which you were. You weren't carded.

3. Cox got knocked out by Vickery. He was a victim of a hit outside the laws of the game. What are you going on about?

4. Woosh retired 15 years ago. He was a hard player in a harder era. He wasn't an off the ball/king hit sniper. He liked hard bumps at players in the contest. Nowadays they'd be a problem.

Since logical is really your thing :)

FWIW, 4 weeks is fair enough. The 5 down to 4 because he couldn't get a discount is another example of a clumsy system but 4 seems about right ...

Worsfold based his whole AFL career around timing his run by way of shortening his stride or slowing down to be second to as many contests as possible where he would then pounce on his victim.
The difference was he rarely if ever got to the ball first to cop his own whack .

With regard to Woosha, yes they were in a different era.

Does that then make it right?

Ha ha yeah, I think that was my point.

But Woosha was a hero, especially when he knocked 3rd gamers into next week.

Oh, but that was a long time ago when the game was different...

Have you ever read about why that all happened?

Steve Wallis, father of current Dog's player Mitch, was shirt fronted by Brett Heady in the early '90s. Before he left the ground that day, Wallis promised Heady that retribution would come.

In that game in '94, Wallis finally evened up, collecting Heady with a similar shirt front. As he hit Heady Wallis yelled "...and here it is!" at Heady.

WCE boys didn't like it, and wanted to fight. Fair enough, footy's an emotional game and feelings were running high.

That's just by way of explanation. Not condoning Southern's sleeper hold.

Actually can we talk about that other WC dog sniper player in Lewis ? I love his storys, there are so many, many dog sniping acts. Whats your favorite one FiveStrings ?

Clearly the actions of players in the 1990s are relevant to Vickery's charge and suspension...

No they're not.

However, a hit is a hit is a hit...

I find it quite ridiculous that many of the hits of earlier times went unpunished, but equally I find the uproar over much of today's incidents a bit over the top.

As far as I am aware, being shirt fronted, punched, elbowed etc, has always done plenty of damage.

Without wanting to be inciteful, guys like Woosha, Matthews, et al, should have been punished heavily in any era, considering the damage they did. And I include Ted Whitten in that. He was as big a hitter as the game has ever seen.

I remember the game well. I was watching on TV as Sumich was given oxygen and stretchered to the rooms and was shit scared he wouldn't wake up.

I didn't know about the prequel between Wallis and Heady but at the time I thought Wallis executed a perfectly legal bump (under the rules back then - now he'd probably get 6 weeks).

The one where he was getting racially vilified and snapped.

Actually that was most of them.

By the way, 5-string, seeing as we're not on the WCE board, can you tell me why you deleted my posts suggesting that some Eagles posters were "deflecting"? Clearly they were, if you want to use the "logic" that everyone claimed I was lacking.

Also, why are so many Eagles supporters attacking me rather than my arguments?
Again, I am trying to use logic as the basis for my question.

Heh, that justifies ramming people head in fences, off the ball hits etc ? or are you saying, every victim of his dog act was because he was provoked by racists ?

I'm saying the majority of his suspensions came when he retaliated against provocation, yes.

How is all of this relevant to Vickery?

Because you were trolling.

Yeah, that was my point.

Every Eagles player knew why Wallis had shirt fronted Heady.
Listening to Malthouse that day, I got the impression that a hit like that on an Eagles player "wasn't fair".

By the way, Malthouse the footballer was also a piece of work, wasn't he?

Ok, so to retaliated by being provoked makes it Ok ? So that would then mean, if you don't consider Lewis a dog sniper due to being provoked then that would mean tyrone was justified in retaliating to Cox sniper gut punching him ?

you cant have it both ways, so which one is it ?

It's only relevant in the sense that Eagles players are as guilty as anyone else of dog acts like Vickery's.

We all get a bit over protective of "our boys", I suppose...

By the way, Doug Hawkins used to write a column for the Footscray Mail in his playing days.
In one of his articles, he commented on his "disappointment" (his word) that Chris Lewis got in to him for coming from the Western suburbs.
According to the Hawk, it was a long and nasty attack on the whole area.

Perhaps he gave as good as he got?

HAwk also mentioned that no-one had a go at Lewis before he unloaded.
He may not have been a real nice bloke...

Malthouse's playing days were before my time mate.

Nice try. One type of provocation is now recognised as being disgraceful behaviour resulting in serious consequences. The other is something that ruckmen do all the time, according to one highly-rated ruckman I have seen quoted on the issue, and was considered to be unworthy of either a free kick (by the controlling umpire, who can be heard saying "Nah no free" or words to that effect) and by the MRP who considered it below the force required for a report.

Can't recall too many Eagles throwing king hits, at least recently. Fraser Gehrig did once, at Libba ironically, missed and got an umpire and somehow got off using the provocation defence. That's going back a fair while though.

Must have been a pre-emptive strike ;)

And Chris Lewis was also up on a biting charge if I remember correctly.
