Kennett labels AFL boss a dictator
Jon Pierik
May 27, 2011

Jeff Kennett has launched another attack on the AFL.

HAWTHORN president Jeff Kennett has launched another attack on the AFL, this time labelling chief executive Andrew Demetriou as a ''benevolent dictator'' with too much power.

A day after Demetriou provided his views on several matters facing the AFL at the National Press Club in Canberra, Kennett, who will retire as Hawks president at the end of the season, made his position clear.

He claimed club presidents had little say in shaping the national competition.

Well, Jeff would be an expert on the subject.

There was an interesting conversation on SEN yesterday with Terry Wallace explaining how the competition became a shambles back in a time when club presidents had more power.

I tend to agree.

Jeff may be right but his message is diluted by Hypocrisy

A.D. a dictator ? Jeff the premier

Too much gambling - jeff the premier Hawks pokise venue in a shopping centre - now outlawed in planning permission

Hates sending players overseas ? What anout HANZ-UP - hawks in NZ ?

Kennett needs to learn to STFU. The AFL is the AFL - it's not a democracy. AD has done and is doing a remarkable job. Sure - he's not perfect and he tinkers with the rules a bit too much for my liking, but he's grown the sport, the brand and the revenue like no one before him.

Long live the dictator!

Agree with this.

Might not be perfect but whats the alternative? Back to the bad old days of the 80s?

Its impossible to have entities who are essentially 'enemies' working together to make decisions for the benefit of all.

Half of the AFL clubs including Collingwood were officially bankrupt back in 1983!

If that's not incompetent management, then I don't know what is!

Can you imagine what the competition might look like if Jeffrey was supreme commander, based upon his time as Victorian Premier?

Day 1: Dismantle the AFL Players Association.

Day 2: Sell ALL AFL assets to the highest bidder in the private sector.

Day 3: Slash Auskick by 50%

etc, etc, etc.

Seconded. And some of the things which didnt work so well were hangovers from his USELESS predecessors

- Docklands stadium finances (or lack of them)

- Locked in to not having a third stadium in Melbourne - they now have more AFL venues in Sydney !!!

-----(Irony is premier Jeff hands were all over this too - trying to boost soccer in victoria)

- Ridiculous "last offer rights" sold to Ch 7 - $10m in cash which probably cost $80m in the long run

Crowning glory this weekend on the Gold Coast

I remember when Jeff was premier and he was actively lobbying to merge Melbourne and his beloved Hawks so they could become the promotional arm of Crown Casino.

Typical Jeff. I think he has been a great president and has moved this club forwards. See my sig.

He obviously doesn't like Vlad and is having pot shots at him while he can.

The funny thing for me was the international junkett comment and not worth growing the sport internationally. If that is the case then why oh why are the Hawks in NZ doing all the promotional work there, signing Kiwi players ( 3 to date so far ) and spending alot of money in the junior ranks of football over there. See HANZUP campaign the Hawks have been running for quite a while now.

Probably doesn't want other clubs to realise the gravy train this is generating for the Hawks not only in players but future revenue as well.

you're an knob! ;)

I don't always criticize others.

But seriously, the AFL has never been in a healthier position... I think Jeff is a tad jealous and probably wants Vlad's job...

Now you've done it twice ;)

I think you're onto something now - but I would say a position on the board would be more likely to be what Jeffrey is after.
