Review vs Bulldogs (5th best comeback by margin for any club, and equal best for StK)

Roo can't line up in the forward line for the rest of his career. Disappointing to see Bruce not go for a ball because Roo was there, seeing one drag their opponent to the other, it was just a mess. TBH I thought that would've been obvious before the game even started. Not interested in any Bruce-Roo combo, Nick taking the best defender in the forward line to make it easier for others, none of it. Needs to be glued to the wing.

I tend to agree. time to wean the forward line off Roo.

They settled into their own structure when he was injured. Keep him out. He is far more effective up the ground with his running and kicking. He can drop back if needed... and hopefully prolong his career another year.

Hickey is the surprise packet for me. Hopefully he gets an extended run and is given time to settle in that role.

Lost in the hysteria of yesterday

Luke Dunstan had 12 contested possessions and 9 clearances
Sam Fisher had 15 marks
Dan McKenzie had 7 intercept possessions (to put that into perspective, one of the better half-backs of the last 8 years Sam Fisher, had 6)
Billy Longer another 37 hitouts (to Cordy's 16)
Good point. I think too many peeps focus on Dunstans lack of pace. Gets called a 'Plodder ' a lot.
Greg Williams & Sam Mitchell were & are plodders as well.
Sometimes you just need a reliable tuff player to get the ball away from the clearance before you worry about anything else :thumbsu:

Before anybody gives me a whack, im in no way saying Luke is in the Williams/Mitchell class...............................................................yet:p

Maybe because of his antics/diving in the 2009 pre lim. Other then that I respect him for what's he's gone through and he a a gun player
That's a bit rich coming from a supporter of a club that cheered on one of the game's great divers in Brad Johnson for 300+ games.

The idiotic tactics of your former full back to rough Roo up is who you should be booing. "Don't hit him again Brian" cue elbow to ribs....doh

Acres and McKenzie whilst have athletic attributes are natural footy players.
Acres in particular... Good movers with the ball... Very Josh Kennedy
McKenzie good hands in the air, carries the footy nicely

Couldn't agree more

Impressive thing with Mckenzie is for his speed and ability to run out games so early he's also good by foot and loves the contest. That passage of play on the wing showed what we'll see. Like beej so good one on one as a midfielder

Great call. I think for a first game back in a new role nick did well, will get better and you can see the affect he will have on the game with the freedom to run end to end

Credit to mysainters calling it last year

Haven't seen one second of the game thanks to a wedding in the Yarra Valley yesterday...

All I can say is Wow! What a fight back! In awe of the boys, what resilience & spirit to claw their way in front.

So proud!

(But gotta wait until Tuesday to record a replay on Fox Footy :( )

There might be another way if you have a decent Internet connection, PM me if you're interested

Geez the Dogs fans are going hard on the excuses -

We had no ruckman.
We had no inside mids with Smith and Stevens injured.
The players were distracted by Smith's career ending in front of them.
We were tired from last week.
We didn't take our chances in the first half.
We were younger.
We were less experienced.
We didn't have Jong, Morris and Matty Boyd.

Well Dogs fans...

WE had 2 ruckmen with only 30 odd games experience - Hardly Cox and Sandilands.

WE lost our best running player in Shane Savage.

WE were distracted by Jake Stringer taking a cheap shot at our captain.

WE were emotionally deflated after last week.

WE didn't even have chances to take in the first half.

You were young? Our senior players were the problem in the first half!

Inexperienced? Our kids were better than yours.

We didnt have Ross, Gilbert or Farren Ray...

Yes I'm a Geary fan.

Credit to him though, played a ripper yesterday.

Was a lot of groundball inside their 50, yet their smalls were well held.

Dalhaus especially, who's a barometer.

Stood up in the onslaught, but also in the last half did some big things in big moments.

I'm allowed to pump up his tyres.

I like to think I do for any player who doesn't get the credit they deserve.

If nobody was talking about Hickey I'd be pumping him up too.

The biggest difference in the game was the coaching. Alan Richardson made the moves and changed the tactics.

He took Riewoldt and threw him on the wing. This opened things up for Hickey and Bruce to get mismatches on Roberts and Roughead and it brought our smalls into the game.

This had the added effect of letting us put more pressure on Johannisen, Murphy, Wood and Webb which stopped their run.

The second move was our stoppage work. This was old school, smash mouth ruck work from Billy Longer. Gone were the deft taps and subtle blocks and in came the big fist to the running rover.

Longer thumped the ball outside the 'circle' where Armo, Steven, etc were on their bikes and always dangerous. If the ball fell in close then Weller andDunstan were there to do their thing.

For all the talk about effort, talent, heart, skill etc this game showed that Richo has the tactics, game sense and courage to make moves on the field.

We play again soon, and there is every chance they thump us, but today's result goes a long way in building the culture of the group as well as a trust between the players and the coaches that they are on the right path.

What an amazing game.

Exactly right, their mids kept reading our taps in the first half, so the switch up of focus (Roo went 3rd man up as well, punching the ball forward) in the ruck gave us more run, as they were tiring while Armo & Steven were still in good nick.

I prefer Nick R forward... As would most opposition coaches... I think he can move up the ground when required.

But when you have a CHF who has been the best player in that position since Carey... I'd like to see him fwd of the ball.
It's just a luxury that he can push up the ground.

I think it's a catch cry "do what Richo did"
For such a successful venture, is there many other examples of Champion Key Fwds moving into the middle?? On a permanent basis.

Yesterday Nick R had 21 and 9M... It was the least influential game I've seen him play with those sort of numbers? In fact I think he was pretty average... Doesn't win enough contested ball vs uncontested for a pure mid... 17up vs 4 cp

If next week Josh is struggling fwd of the pill... I'd like to see him push high up the ground
It doesn't always have to be Nick...
Gunston Roughy take turns.

Completely disagree.

Not that Roo isn't amazing like you say, but its all about LAR now.

A big play yesterday was, I think Jack Sinclair receiving the pill at the back of the pack, Roo running past (in a worse position) calling for it, Sinclair ignored the skipper & duly slotted it through. There was once when that would never have happened, but the young guys have so much belief in themselves that THEY are ready to take the game on. :)

What if Bruce is being well beaten? Or needs assistance?

Imo it's a needs basis

If you look at Hawthorn... They don't even have a set fwd line...

Roo can get 20 easy touches on the wing and take 10 marks outside of 50
But it would be far outweighed by 15 touches, 3 marks i50 and 5 outside 50

I would also like to see Josh push high on occasion also... He has a massive engine, and it's important for cold fwds to get up and get their hands on the ball at times.

Same with Hickey... Thought he could have played a few more minutes on ball yesterday... Particularly first half when he barely touched it.

Rigid positions are easy to coach against...

Then find another way to score goals. I think you need to stop talking about Roo like he's going to be around for the next 5+ years.
