Review vs Bulldogs (5th best comeback by margin for any club, and equal best for StK)

One mark inside 50 is worth two between the arcs...

Matthew Richardson is not great because he played on the wing... For one season

He was great because he kicked 800 plus goals

Midfielders are a dime a dozen .... There are over 30 gun mids in the AFL less than 10 gun KFs.
In a great team, he wouldn't have had to go through the middle and find the ball

Whilst I agree we should get upfield... When needed... He should still do what he does best...

Well played to the saints for their awesome comeback yesterday. All day Armitage was to good for us and Billings last qtr was something special (bit like the bont last year v Dees). Then there were the other 6 jack's who were to quick for us in the last 20mims.

Obviously your team will take a lot of belief from the last two weeks. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Who cares whether there are many other examples of anyone else who has done it? The role suits Nick down to the ground because he has a tank that very few if any have had before him and not only that, he has a past history of having played the role successfully.

I've been calling for him to play this role more for years (including in the 2010 GF replay, when it was clear that Collingwood knew how to keep him quiet by putting Maxwell in front of him) and one of the reasons why is that he could probably kick just about as many goals from the wing pushing forward as he will if he's playing permanently forward, yet him being out of the forward line leaves more chances for the likes of Bruce/Hickey/Membrey to kick goals and Nick would of course be kicking many more goals from a wing than whoever else we'd have playing wing if it wasn't him. So overall, I just see us being able to kick more goals with him playing wing and I also see us having a much better target when kicking out of the back 50 and of course he'd also be able to push deep into defence to help out back there when needed. I just see so many positives with him playing that role and of course it also lets the likes of Membrey get more senior AFL experience, rather than spending more time in the VFL.

He was having little to no influence forward yesterday either though, so it's not like he suddenly became less influential once he was moved to the wing in the 2nd half. He was moved to the wing because he wasn't having much influence forward and because the forward line was less effective overall with him there, as crazy as that may sound.

As I said prior to the game I think we should have just stuck with what had worked so well for us the week before and left Bruce, Hickey and Membrey forward and played Roo on the wing from the start. Was better late than never though to make the move and kudos to Richo for doing it when he did.

My biggest concern with Roo started when GT put him at CHF. Hopefully he can now just play without the physical pressure and hits that come with being CHF. He's copped some serious punishment over the years. A lazy 20 is fine by me. And if needed the switch back can always be made.

Just watched the replay. This game had a bit of "rumble in the jungle" about it. The fave threw everything at us and we absorbed the punishment... and when they tired, we came out and knocked them out.

Great to see we have some kids who can kck. Billings on the arc of 1 step... BANG!

Billings, Lonie and Sinclair brings skill and decision making around our forward 50. It's good having genuine footy players with footy smarts around goal.

It is indeed and if he's out of the forward 50 it will mean the likes of Bruce will take more in there and I think it's a pretty safe bet that Nick would still take plenty of marks inside 50 if he was playing on the wing. Most of them in 1-on-1 contests, against someone shorter than him, rather than being double or triple teamed.

Richo still kicked 48 goals 30 in the year he played wing. I'm pretty sure most of them would have been from marks inside the 50. It was only 5 less goals than he kicked from two more games the previous year, so his goal average was basically exactly the same, yet around the ground he had much more influence and he got 16 more Brownlow votes from two less games.

No shit Sherlock, but Richo was incredible that season and I still remember the roar of the crowd every time he went for a mark. He was just dominating games of footy and if he'd played that role and that well his whole career then he'd have had a much better career than he ended up having mostly up forward, IMO.

What does a great team have to do with us? Last time I checked we're a rebuilding team and as such it's more about the future and in this instance it would be largely about letting the likes of Bruce, Hickey and Membrey/McCartin develop in that role that Roo would otherwise be keeping one of them out of.

Again, I think in the short term it could make us better anyway though, as it did yesterday, so I'd certainly like to see us give it more of a go going forward, as Roo obviously did when he kept on telling Alan Richardson he wanted to play midfield the preseason before last.

One way to find out though and we could argue this till we're blue in the face and they would still just be opinions.

The Jack Pack isn't a six pack then I guess? Hopefully we can draft another one this year.

Have now watched the game after I had got back home. Was in Germany on Saturday morning and have now added to the strange places i have followed or found out Saints scores. I woke up in the hotel room at about 6 and checked the score. Pretty even at about quarter time. The hotel wi-fi was very iffy and eventually I found the only place it worked properly was in the bathroom.

So I sat in there watching the scores and stats with mounting disappointment. We had to pack and get to the airport, but I kept seeing another Saints goal on my phone when I checked. Down at breakfast we had to be sociable with some other people, but the Wi-Fi worked out better down there, so I slipped away into a corner and got into the Live game site. I watched the last 5 min live in a slight state of shock.

My English non-AFL loving wife was calling me to the taxi which was all loaded up out the front. But we got to the final siren and we had it.

Wife calling me again. 'Just have to watch the song and I'll be there'. Her face was a picture. Only a Saints fan would understand!

Anyway, great days for all us Sainters, and I'm going to watch the good bits again later!

Great stuff. There IS NO BIT THAT IS NOT GOOD! I watched it again today and the beauty of the firstchalf is hearing the commentators fall over themselves to praise (correctly) the dogs when you know full well what is about to unfold!

This.

Absorbed.

Then went pow.

Aussie

I reckon Nick will line up at CHF next week. And from the presser, AR tends to agree that Nick can play alongside Josh and higher up the ground. In our win vs GC they caused Mayhem i50 as Roo did last year with Stanley when he was an AA CHF and took 30 more marks than any other forward with worse supply.

You also realise that it's no different taking games of Membrey fwd as it is taking minutes off Acres, McKenzie, Templeton and Co on the Wing

Nick can of course play wing
Like The above mentioned... Newnes, Joey, Gilbert, Savage, Webster, Billings, Ray, Shenton
And get 20 touches consistently
How many guys do we have who can take 10 marks as a key fwd consistently?

It will be done

There will be no famous Richo style move (he spent time i50 in 08 also)
Into the midfield... When we are struggling fwd... He will assist the other Fwds when required.

I would prefer not to absorb in future. 55 points down is never a place you want to be ever!

I see the reference though

No, but unlike some opinion out there I don't think they weren't trying.

It was frenetic, it forced errors, they were overwhelmed...

Not sure I buy that they weren't caring.
