I think there will be alot of late picks/rookie picks from them

The group next year has probably been underestimated in Banfield, Evans, Becker, Curtin and Kelly
Rodrigues as well in terms of next year. And I think whilst Hart hasn't been selected for U18s, he will also be part of a strong group next year.

But yes still getting the sense that it is players being taken late, which I guess will be playing to the idea that this draft will in hindsight have looked deep but lack the heights of quality early on. Despite their efforts, I still don't think anyone will be picking Allan or Urquhart any earlier than pick 20.

Yeh wow didnt realise he was 17

Had 22 disposals on colts as a 16 year old

I think Allen goes in the top 20, not Urquhart though. I have Allen really high but he will need to start putting some substance on the board to go there, i dont think traits will be enough

Considering SA beat the Allies, Allies beat WA, and the Vic teams didn't really smash either of the teams they played, it's pretty even. WA beat Vic Metro this w/end and the cat will be amongst the pigeons.
Probs won't but if they play like they did on Sunday again, they will be very hard to beat.
Nothing is a given in young fella footy.
Go you mighty West Aussies

What a great result for WA with an absolute hiding of SA. That performance should silence a few. WA had many contributors but some of my better performers.

Max Rohr. Game high 4 goals. A solid display and 1 of the best for me. Hopefully continues that dominance moving into next 2 games.

Kayle Gerryn. Great to see him have more impact than game against Allies. A very good size and strong build. Would like to see him continue to develop in forward line as not sure he is going to be big enough as a ruck at AFL level.

Will Hayes. A strong first half. Smooth mover and looks to have good skills. Slightly built and not overly powerful but nice to watch. One particularly good kick to Angove in first qtr which resulted in a set shot and goal for WA.

Hamish Davis. Think he is the one to watch and is moving up the ranks for WA. Starting to really get noticed. Very complete player with still a lot of development left in him. Commentators comparing him to Fyfe at same age.

Luke Urquhart. Inside bull for WA. Kick obviously a worry and might affect his draft stocks but competes hard in every game he plays.

Bo Allen. Great to have him back in the side and you feel he lifts the team with his leadership. Hopefully gets up for next 2 games. Faded in second half a little but I guess to be expected coming back from injury.

Darcy Petersen. Best back for the day. Easily beat Welsh. One to watch for remainder of carnival.

Charlie Burke. An honest player that I don't notice a lot but his stats speak otherwise. 2 solid performances for WA so far.

Ones I am hoping to see a little more from before end of carnival. Van der struyf, Angove, Champion

I see the EF v Subi colts match went down to the wire again....with Subi taking the chocolates....again. EF kicking 1.7 in the last quarter to lose by a point....though interesting to see Subi forward Henderson, winning the game kicking a point....his fifth for the game....kicking 0.5 for the day.....and who says poor kicking for goal, is poor football!!

Hamish Davis I am a big fan, can play so many roles at AFL level, I thought Sheehan comparing him to a young Fyfe was quite good even though it’s quite easy to because of him coming from the same club.

I thought the small aboriginal boy for South Australia was quite impressive as well, I didn’t catch his name though.
Agreed, Davis looks a very good prospect. Really is the prototype modern day 3rd forward tall. Don’t think he fumbled once, super clean below the knees for a guy his size. Looks to have excellent endurance, covered a lot of ground. I’m tipping he’s one that will be a lot higher in draft rankings by the end of the year.
Good call by ol Shifter, re the Fyfe comparison ( as a junior).

Charlie Burke also had a great game, think he deserves more recognition, uses the ball smartly and worked hard all day. Kayle Gerreyn displayed his talent, has the highest ceiling out of all the WA prospects IMO.
These are the two players I liked from WA and it has been in back to back games. Burke has great footskills and depending on his athletic profile, he could be a very solid draft prospect.

WA v VIC METRO. Good to see that WA were well and truly competitive up until half time before the Vic mids got hold of us. Allen, Urquhart, Rodriguez, Boxshall all tried hard but were ultimately outclassed resulting in a one sided clearance count and limited quality supply to the WA forwards.

A few thoughts

Allen. Probably WA's best chance of a first round draft pick. Did his chances no harm yesterday with 19 disposals. Hit the scoreboard with 2 very good goals. Like how he brings his teammates into the game.

Artemis. His best game so far for the carnival. Attacked the footy and thought he was our best defender for the day. I think he could be starting to hit some recruiters radars now.

Angove. Pleasing to see a better game from him. A clever footballer and adds a touch of class with ball in hand.

Champion & Davis. Thought these 2 were going to have a day out with 2 goals each by qtr time. Both looked dangerous early. Poor WA ball movement and very few quality entries limited their impact after half time.

Rodriguez. How good for WA that he is an underager. Another solid game by him yesterday. One to watch for next year.

Urquhart. Nobody could question his attack on the footy, desire to win the ball and clearance ability. Unfortunately his kicking continues to let him down and would like to see him bring his teammates into the game a little more.

Gerryn & Rohr. WA's tall forwards couldn't back up from last week unfortunately. Will be needing them to next week so can challenge VIC Country as makes a big difference when they are up and about.

Well, Vic Country have to play WA at Claremont Oval.

I think we can all agree in WA that it's a very weird ground with all those apartment blocks.

If you haven't played there before or even watched footy there before....promise me, it's different.

Have watched a few colts games there before. Not a lot of seating and always looking into the sun from memory.

I think there will be alot of late picks/rookie picks from them

The group next year has probably been underestimated in Banfield, Evans, Becker, Curtin and Kelly
Even looking at the game on the weekend that WA lost I think you are right. There may not be a lot (if any) in Round 1 but I think WA could have quite a few picked up in the later rounds. Look like a well coached, cohesive team with quite a few having solid carnivals and looking well and truly up to the level.

Theres also a difference between whats the best performed 17 year old now and who will potentially be the best at 21

By that i mean, you might be able to get results now with undersized guns but what they become and what there ceiling is, is a far different equation

These are the players I like for different reasons, still not sure if they're anything more than a second round selection.
Gerreyn certainly is the most interesting WA prospect, if he has solid endurance and speed numbers, I could see him as a first round selection.

Looking at that list, it is not going to be a great crop of WA draftees.

Not one of the options screams a lock to make it at AFL level.

Yeah it will be interesting to see what happens. I'm not sure myself but WA's unexpected good performances have put some extra interest into the discussion.

I think WA will do ok against Vic Country this weekend at Claremont because of the ground. It's very odd. A big grandstand on one side (which can't be seen on a broadcast obviously), exclusive apartments that circumnavigate 60% of the outer side and then there is a portion of traditional (WAFL) grassed bank to the Perth to Fremantle railway end.

Having said that, Vic Country have a good squad.

I agree it will not be prolific in terms of numbers picked up out of WA but still feel there will be a number of late picks. 8-10 you think would be a reasonable result. The WA boys have certainly performed better and been more competitive than anybody predicted. We also cannot underestimate how much less development a lot of these players have been exposed to in comparison to the Eastern State lads. In a few years and once in the system they could be as good if not better than some of the higher draft picks.

Off your list I agree in that I think Gerryn and Angove both have a good chance of being picked up.

Off your list I agree in that I think Gerryn and Angove both have a good chance of being picked up.
What development opportunities are missing from the WA crop?
Never heard that WA has less options than the Eastern States.

Our head recruiter has mentioned several times over the past couple of years that WA and VIC Country boys, particularly ones who haven’t been in the pathways from a young age, usually have far more development left in them, than Vic Metro boys.

Interesting, I could imagine some of our rural players would have some upside.

Maybe the city kids in the PSA system would not have the same development issues.

There’s a host of reasons.

VIC Metro, even the suburban leagues when kids are still 12, 13, etc, have the deepest leagues in terms of talent.

The higher a level talented kids can play at from an early age, the faster and better they develop.

Then there’s also the level of coaching, and the resources that are spent, even at junior levels.

And, most of the best kids getting scholarships to private schools, with again elite levels of coaching and competition.

This applies to every sport.

Kids in WA and SA don’t play in competitions as strong as Vic, unless they’re playing senior WAFL or SANFL, and often times, they’re playing a role in a team competing for a “real” championship, and aren’t necessarily being moved around different positions, and being challenged to improve aspects of their game.

A recruiter can’t walk up to a SANFL coach and ask them to play a particular kid in a certain role. They can in the CTL.

Andre Gulluni (EP), Wesley Walley (S), Tom.Bell (SF) and Toby Whan (SF) haven't been named in their respective colts line-ups this weekend, so there is a pretty good chance they will play for WA on Saturday.

The Claremont side will be interesting to see when it is announced tomorrow. A few might drop back with possibly Oscar Willis also coming into the WA side?

Hudon Pivac (SF), Matthew Becker (PT), Jayden Rigoll (WP), Hayden Windsor (S), Deian Roberts (PT), Trent Hiscock (WP) and Koby Evans (P) are listed to play colts. Swan Districts have the bye so unsure about who from them might get an opportunity. Maybe Colby McDonald who has been in good form up forward. Chayse Martinson and Anthony Hansen are the other two Swans players yet to crack crack the WA final 23.

I'm assuming that Darcy Petersen (PT) with 0 disposals in last week's state game must have copped an injury early on although I didn't see the incident if there was one.

That leaves 26 players

Possible line-up
FF: Walley, Gerreyn, Rohr
HF: Davis, McDonald, Champion
C: Burke, Allan, Angove
HB: Artemis, Dennis, Boxshall
FB: Willis, Curtin, Van der Struyf

FOLL: Riddle, Urquhart, Rodriguez

INT (From) : Banfield, Whan, Kelly, MacTaggart, Gulluni, Douglas, Bell, Hayes

Sounds great! Happy to read there will an extensive review into the development pathways within WA football. Can only hope there are improvements made.
