Souths more mature bodies and experience prevail in the end

EP 10.6:66
SF 11.8:74

A good hit out for our younger lads with some encouraging signs

And some not so good ones

As mentioned East Perth went down by 8 points but there was a fair bit to like from what was a pretty youthful East Perth outfit (aside from the young Eagles there was several youngsters amongst the EP contingent) against an older more experienced South Fremantle team

The Royals led by 15 points halfway through the 3rd quarter after McInnes ran into an open goal to kick his 4th for the match and to that point they were the better side. From there, however, some poor decision making and skill errors proved costly as Souths physical pressure took its toll - it actually got quite willing in the last quarter and there were a few spot fires around the ground as the Bulldogs tried to bully their younger opponents into submission. To their credit they fought the game out when it looked like the game was getting away from them)

Partington - was very good. Don't have any stats available but I'd expect he would have had near on 30 disposals. Of all the players looked the most likely to push for a senior game. Stronger at the ball than 2016 and not as easily pushed aside. His willingness to run and generate repeat possessions was also a highlight

McInnes- something of a surprise. Provided a good target up forward and competed in the ruck when moved on ball. Marked and kicked well finishing with 4 well deserved goals. Will need to churn out this kind of effort on a consistent basis before I'm convinced of his worth on the list

Gorter - struggled early in the first quarter as Souths midfield had an early ascendancy making life difficult for defenders. Had a solid game thereafter leading the defence.

Watson - quiet first quarter but his drive off half back in the second quarter helped propel EP to the lead. Super exciting player who has moments of brilliance and his strong tackling was a feature. Is also prone to the odd brain fart though which he needs to tidy up

Rotham - looked comfortable enough at this level and is composed with ball in hand. Can see him being a really good player once he builds up his light frame and can compete better physically with grown men

Cole - a bit like Watson in that he can do some nice things but screws up occasionally. Decent game from him but I've seen him play better

Brophy- had an OK game and did provide some nice run off half back in the second quarter in particular

Karpany- probably the best user of the ball in EPs lineup. Needs to get his hands on the ball more though to be a truly damaging midfielder

Bayok - considering he was playing colts last year this was a big step up and tbh it showed. Will need time to develop so that he can better absorb the physical pressure at league level.

Mutimer - had a bit of the ball but used it poorly for the most part. He isn't a particularly smart footballer and doesn't use his powerful left foot as well as he could. Makes simple mistakes too often

Snadden- see Mutimer although he was probably slightly more effective

Lamb - not impressed. Doubt he had more than five possessions and provided no physical pressure. Complete non event and it's hard to see him coming good

Waterman- named on the team sheet but sat in the grandstand wearing an East Perth polo. I have an inkling that he may have made a rookie mistake of some sort and was sat out as a disciplinary measure - he was sitting in front of me and a couple of club staff had a chat to him which I couldn't hear but it looked like they were having a bit of a crack. Misty looked a tad sheepish as well but I might be wrong on that. Didn't look like he was injured

One day I'll understand why the Eagles felt it necessary not to reveal which of their players were going to play today

Thanks to those who provided the reports that allowed this weeks Fraser McInnes Update to happen (I think it was just Keys)...

Lamb would have to have a massive turn around to be AFL standard anytime soon from what I've seen.

Such a disappointment. Really hope he pulls his finger out but worried the recruiters bad a really bad call on him. He just isnt there mentally, which was a criticism of him pre-draft and I dont think the WA factor has helped at all.

I hope at some point Lamb gets a run in the seniors this year to show his wares, before we make the impending chop.

Unlikely that he'll actually deserve the call up, but it could always be a case of the player playing shit at WAFL level, but could Microsoft Excel surrounded by good players. Ala Hill.

Hill never really put his hand up in the WAFL, yet we bought him back and he has kept his spot.

Difference between hill and lamb is that hill is a proven player. Also lambs work rate makes hills look elite.

It could also be said that we have too much competition now that when hill last played for ep.

Imo waterman will go past lamb this season.

Maybe we play Lamb on a HBF and then push onto a wing? Sounds like a silly idea but it might get some confidence in him and he might learn some work rate. Playing as a forward in a team with a young midfield would be vert frustrating and hard to learn your craft.
Will be hard for himto take over from all the other players that failed in their spots and hence had to be pushed into a defensive flank.

I haven't been able to watch him at WAFL level but I tend to agree. Force him to be accountable and get involved in the game by playing him in defence. Physically, he has a lot going for him.

As it stands we only have 3 players who are definite non-starters for round one and a couple of others who could be considered touch and go to be ready by then

That means EP could have as many as 21 Eagles players to fit in assuming one travelling emergency for the Eagles

Lamb is competing for a forward spot with McInnes, Allen, Waterman and a resting ruck

Gorter and Mackenzie will play as KPDs whilst Watson, Rotham, Brophy and Cole are HBF types

Midfield spots he's competing with Duggan, Partington, Karpany, Mutimer, Snadden and one of Nelson, Hutch or Redden. Add Venables to that if he's fit

Lamb is tumbling down the pecking order in a big way especially if Waterman and Allen perform

Footballers before athletes please. Let's not take away HBF time from Cole, Gorter, Rotham etc. because Lamb can't play his own position.

I completely agree with footballers before athletes and think Lamb will be a bust for us. That said, he is on our list for this year and trying to find if he can play other roles, even if at reserves level, wouldn't be a bad idea. I would give priority in the WAFL seniors to guys already playing that role and in whom we see a future but, as it stands, he appears to be a waste of space so something should be tried.

The recruiters have to stop overthinking things. McGovern/Blakely over Lamb and, as another example, Duncan over Weedon seemed the obvious picks at the time.

I agree. But he is on the list now so can he be made useful? I doubt it but it wouldn't be the first time a player has been moved only to find their mojo.

Lamb was given stints down back and through the midfield last year. He even took a couple of centre bounces as a ruckman in one game

Didn't make much difference

Then we did we even offer him another contract? If he doesn't want to put the hard work in let him stay in the reserves. Karpany went back to the reserves and it worked wonders for him.

Drop lamb in the middle when the opposition has a clear advantage in the middle and tell him to just block for the EP mids and apply pressure. With his big body and endurance he might be affective and he might even start winning a bit of the ball.

I honestly think that Lamb and the club tried to find a trade back to a Victorian club but got no worthwhile interest so a new one year deal was agreed

Pre-Christmas he was training really well and looked committed giving me hope that the lack of interest was the kick up the bum he needed

Post Christmas as the contested work ramped up he became less and less noticeable and the two games he's played so far he's been anonymous - the GWS game he had some excuse as the ball wasn't in our f50 often and came in haphazardly when it did. For EP he had no such excuse as there was enough opportunity for him to present as a forward and have an impact but he was totally ineffectual

He should be playing reserves until he finds form
