The effort and intent is there and we were dominating field position for a period but there is a distinct lack of scoring power. South get one easily in response.

West Coast 8.11 59 def by. South Fremantle 15.12 102

Reasonable performance, but could have been closer. Souths ran over us in the second half.

From best to worst (but not really)...

Zane Trew: 26 disposals, 6 marks, 6 tackles, 5 i50s, 0.2
Ran hard all day both ways and was rewarded time after time. Still unconvinced by his kicking and I suspect the WAFL is his level. Can see him winning a Sandover one day.

Jack Petruccelle: 17 disposals, 2 marks, 5 i50s, 0.2
A quieter second half but the first half showed more than enough for an immediate recall to the senior side. No idea why they moved him off ball in the second half as it quelled his influence. Was up against it at times as a forward target but battled hard.

Rhett Bazzo: 15 disposals, 9 marks, 1 i50
Had a great third quarter and was dominant in the air. Looks surprisingly fit to me given the preseason he had. Should come into senior calculations soon. Uses the ball well for a big man.

Xavier O'Neill: 20 disposals, 4 marks, 4 tackles, 4 i50s, 1.1
Worked his way into it during the second half. I suspect they may have taken a tag off him, and it showed. He's too good at this level for these sort of numbers.

Isiah Winder: 22 disposals, 7 marks, 2 tackles, 2 i50s, 1.0
A solid game, but I want to see Winder use his pace more working into space and moving the ball quickly. The Beagles could really use that player through the middle to run and carry and lower the eyes. He's a little too static for my liking given his skillset.

Coby Burgiel: 20 disposals, 6 marks, 2 i50s, 0.1
A sound WAFL debut. Looks to have a bit of dash, though wanted to see a bit more of it second half but he likely tired. A good base to build off. Tidy by foot and looks to make good decisions.

Harry Barnett: 7 disposals, 3 marks, 15 HOs, 2 i50s
Doesn't look particularly fit to me; not surprising for a young ruckman. Worked over by their debutant early but came into the game more as it progressed. Took a few good marks in the second half.

Tyrell Dewar: 7 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, 0.1
Looks nippy, but not ready for WAFL league footy yet, especially with the Beagles. Will be a slow burn.

Without having watched the game….

Eight listed players including first year draftees Barnett, Burgiel and Dewar topped up with a bunch of ammos (+ Nelson and Waterman) losing by 7 goals against a finalist last year is not a disgrace by any stretch

Without the injuries to the seniors, I daresay we'd have come close, or won.

Write-up by the club.
No mention of Barnett & Dewar.
The Eagles were particularly tested in the key defensive posts where key forwards Miller and Zac Strom were ubiquitous, although young defender Rhett Bazzo continued to build his match fitness and had some good moments, finishing with nine marks.

Emerging midfielder Zane Trew had a good afternoon with 26 possessions, while Isiah Winder, Jack Petruccelle and Xavier O’Neill also worked hard along with youngster Coby Burgiel who got better the longer the game ran.

Think they’ve done a better job of filling the top-up spots than in previous years.

People who watched the whole game: were O’Neill and Petch really second and third best?
I’d say yes, but with the * that neither played complete games of footy - XON a quiet first half, Petch a quiet second.

Ah Chee being in South’s best shows their method is skewed, thought he was generally poor and wasted the footy.

TBH was a shit draft to have a pick in the teens up to 20. The player we missed out on was Berry and he's just a solid foot soldier imo. So we took Taranto-lite (who the club wanted to begin with) and hoped Venables could play catch up in regards to footy iq and injury. As much as his injury was horrendous and derailed whatever career he may have had I personally don't think he would have made it.

What the Eagles would give at the moment if we had grabbed Sean Darcy or Darcy Cameron in that draft. Shai Bolton…..and even Sam Powell Pepper is playing alright footy at the moment and would look alright in our midfield.
Hindsight is a glorious thing.
