Lach, I think I taught Jeffrey Garlett in Merredin in 2006. He was Year 12 then and getting driven down to play for Swan Districts every week (must have been the reserves or something back in '06).

Anyway he was a really nice kid and I would be stoked to see him get picked up by an AFL club, hopefully Freo! :thumbsu:

Surely he is still not injured, I see no value playing the guy if he is injured....Perhaps lost a bit of conditioning?

Didn't see the game sabre, but I did listen to some of it on the radio and he seemed to spend a fair bit of time on the bench from what I could tell. He's not going to get close to full fitness with the length of time he's missed. Would still like to see him back in for the last two games though.

Is he draft quality and if he is what pick would you give up?
He might slip under the radar.

But from the many times I have seen him, he is certainly draft quality, Would be very disappointed for him if he doesn't nominate, or doesn't get picked up. Because he would easily be better than a lot in our squad.

I'm certainly no expert in how much you'd pay for him (in terms of a pick), but from what I can tell - he seems superfit, has a big tank, certainly knows where the goals are, can play forward or in the middle, is very hard at the ball... DOB 09/09/87, so turning 21 next month... I'd guess something in or around the 50s - much like Bradd Dalziell last year. Just a guess mind you.

I was at the game.
He's lost a lot of condition.
He worked hard, when he got it he used it well.

Browne's gone again so maybe bring Dessie in for the half that Browne plays?

Me and Chrsco have been saying this for months now. :p

Would be close to our best 22 straight up.

Clearance machine and runs as hard as you couldn't believe. Only 20 iirc.

Thanks chops, we have, haven't we?:thumbsu: See him as the standout mature age player along with Garlett and Wolfenden. I expect Garlett and Anthony to be put on to a list proper and Wolfenden to be rookie listed, just my guess.

Lach, great write up on the players at the Swans game and Hinkley missed 2 from directly in front, less than 30 metres, not that I'm counting, or holding against him :p. Smith was running with Cockie, from what I saw and Cockie ran all over him in the last quarter, which just shouldn't happen with an AFL trained player.

Broadhurst was a pretty tireless worker as well and Swans didn't have a defender that could match his endurance all day.

I was at Swans/Subi today.

Naitanui did some really good stuff but doesn't work hard enough forward and back.
Luke Newick showed the way to beat him: Jump early and get position and smash him up.
Daniel Rich: I am conflicted here...this kid did some really classy stuff and kicked one very nice goal on the run and one after working his way through a pack...but I watched him pretty closely and he is so lazy when he doesn't have the ball it's not funny...at one stage the ball came out of Subi's back line with him standing on the edge of the square and he didn't break out of a walk until the ball hit the wing...if I was a tagger I would love to play on him...you'd only run 2km a game.
When he has to though, he has a good turn of pace

Our boys:
Hinkley - ordinary at best. Missed an easy running goal in the last. Had a couple of good passages in the the third where he made space and kicked well inside fifty, otherwise not really doing much. Copped a corky in the arse in the last too.

Dessie - played a full game of league. Was quite good I thought, used the ball well, got a goal or two, ran reasonably hard, but was blowing like a steam train.

Chris Smith - Didn't really notice him that much...but did one nice run through the center.

Others of note.

Wolfenden was ok, but makes Richardson from claremont look like an iron man.

Adam Cockie - Used the ball well. Could be worth a late pick.
Darren Rumble - beat any spud full forward swans threw up there...good body on body.

Clancee Pearce - This kid will be very good. Works hard, smothers, nice kick...needs some fitness.

Jeffery Garlett is the standout small forward potential that I have seen this year. Reasonably tall, maybe a smidge under 6 feet, still light framed though. Quick and evasive. Knows where the goals are and kicked three or 4. Touch of the Jeffery Farmer about him. I would take hime before going anywhere near Richardson or Ballantyne.

Yarran didn't play
Nicko's run down the wing was awesome but then he didnt know what to do with it:( I always love to watch him play tho:thumbsu:

Hinkley's chase in the last 1/4 was great, he is very quick.

I noticed that Smith tagged Rich for a while, niether of them were that great IMO.

Des was ok, Hinkley disappointing, Smith hardly noticed.

You had to laugh at Brad Smith, how many points and OOFs did he kick before his 100th?

Also Jeff Garlett was great, his smother in the 3rd was brillant, if he had have finished it with a goal then that wouldve been superb. Agree with Lach, Garlett >>>>> Richo, Ballantyne:thumbsu:

Cant think of anything else to add.

True, but Smith was limping noticeably in the last.

It was just the two of us anyway. Bit of a tradition we've established which we used to include the others in, but have now decided we like it better when it's just us. Every WAFL derby we can manage (and of course there is only one real WAFL derby).... we head off - him in his blue and white, me in my red and white.

TBH I think this is only the second win he's seen :)D), so I can hardly begrudge him 2 wins in the 7 or so years we've been going. :p

How did Antony Kyanga look IP?

Ideal wizard replacement?

His old man did an apprenticeship with me and didn;t grow much until he was 18-19.

He had all the footy talent in the world as well.

I see BOB kicked 2 goals for Peel.

Seems that BOB is gone for the year Rip.

Think a charged up Chris Mayne with the body of a 12 year old.... My God, the boy ran and ran and ran and hassled and hassled and ran some more... Just like Chopper does, but he was absolutely swamped in his footy kit. The XS was 3 sizes too big... But quick? - bloody hell he was like a whippet...

Skills looked a bit average, but by god he was like the Duracell guy - so quick and amazing ability to put pressure on the bloke with the ball...

But seriously looked like they grabbed a kid from the little league and told him to get out there with the Men.

Thanks IP. Could be worth a late pick. Comes from an excellent hardworking family.

There is a very good chance he will have a growth spurt and /or fill out.

my fiancé and I both thought kyanga was a highlight of the derby, non stop running and hasseling it was great to watch. He shanked a few kicks but otherwise he was excellent and wouldn't mind seeig him on the rookie list.

EMERGING STAR: Liam Anthony has been an important part of East Fremantle's late season revival.
EAST Fremantle continues to make a late charge to take part in finals action and a key part of the resurgence has been Liam Anthony. After only managing 23 games over the last two seasons since making his debut in 2006, Anthony has emerged as one the most damaging midfielders in the competition averaging 26 touches and kicking 22 goals in his 17 games of 2008.

The Sharks ended an eight-year losing streak at home against South Fremantle on Saturday and Anthony was instrumental in the victory with 30 possessions and three goals in yet another best afield display from the 21-year-old.

Anthony missed East Fremantle's two wins at Fremantle Oval over the Bulldogs last year and enjoyed tasting victory in a derby for the first time on Saturday.

"It was a good game and for us to be able to h old off their late charge will give us plenty of confidence. They are the second best side in the best competition, but our group has really matured and it showed with a really good performance all day," Anthony said.

"It's the first derby win I've played in well, so it was nice to taste success against them. It has been a long time since we've had much success at all against them as they are one of the sides to have the wood of us, so hopefully we are starting to turn that around. We are starting to play better as a team and things are coming together with our young players stepping up and learning how to have an impact in league footy."

Despite losing its first six games of the season, East Fremantle remains a chance to play finals football for the first time since 2002 if it can beat Peel and West Perth in the last two games, and Anthony is excited at that prospect.

"Funnier things have happened and I'd love to play finals footy so we will just focus on winning this week and hope Swan Districts lose and then we will be very close," he said.

"We haven’t played finals for six or seven years and this young group is showing it has the hunger to succeed and if we play finals it will be massive for us all, but if we don’t we will have gone close and will back up again next year."

Like many of the young players in the Sharks side, coach Shane Woewodin is learning as he goes this season and Anthony believes that the group and coach is now developing a terrific understanding the longer the season goes on.

"Our training has picked up with not just the intensity of the boys but also with the drills we have been doing. That has given us more fitness and the confidence to run out games and the effect of that is now showing with our results improving after our terrible start," he said.

"We are also starting to play to Shane's game plan better and that is to play on, move the ball quickly and take chances so that is a really enjoyable way to play. We are a fit and young team so that's exciting and we are all around the same age and are best mates, so it's a great team to be part of at the moment."

After not being able to cement himself in the side over the last two years, Anthony has enjoyed not having to stress over being picked week to week and he believes that has helped his form improve.

"Shane has been really good for not just me, but for all the young kids. It's fair to say that I didn’t get along that well with the last coach, but Shane has shown faith and confidence in me," he said.

"My football has really developed under him and for the coach to have confidence in me like he does gives me a lot of self belief and that goes a long way to playing good footy. Thursday night's at training has certainly been a lot easier this year as I haven’t had to worry about if I will be in the side or not. To know I'm playing every week is great and has let me develop my skills and fitness rather than stressing about getting a league game."

Anthony, like several other players, were unhappy at the club last year with the coach but he decided to stick with his football, put in a big pre-season and is now hoping his big 2008 can see him still play in the AFL.

"Last year was really tough but I love my footy and never considered giving up as I still have aspirations to play at the highest level. I felt I was playing reasonable footy in the reserves even though I wasn’t as fit as I could have been but when I got a chance in the league team I got no game time, so that was frustrating," he said.

"There were some troubles at the club last year and a lot of the kids were sick of seeing guys that didn’t deserve to be playing league footy constantly getting games ahead of them. After that, I just set myself to have a decent pre-season to get myself fitter so could become a regular league player, if I wasn’t going to do that I might as well have gone to play with my mates in the Amateurs, so I set myself for a big year and it's paying off."

Anthony is certainly feeling the wins and losses a lot more this year as he works full time at the club in a development role, which has also helped him create a good bond with his coach.

"It's great working at the club and you certainly feel the wins and losses on Monday. When we win the whole office is really upbeat but when we lose it's a bit down and really quiet, so the vibe certainly changes based on how the team goes," he said.

"It has really helped me out being there full time, though, and it's good to be there with Shane during the week and to talk to him and learn from him more than I would just at training.

"He's in his first year and he has learned a lot from it. He is still learning as he goes, but he is helping us all out as much as he can and he has been fantastic for our young group. He always talks to us about how game and where we went well, not so well and where you can improve, so that is making sure we are all getting better while he's learning the caper."

Anthony originally came down from Geraldton to play colts football with the Sharks and after taking a season to adjust, has found that the wide expanses of the WAFL grounds has really helped him.
"Off the field it was easy coming down to Perth but it probably took me a year of colts to get used to the footy," he said.

"By my second year I found I benefitted from the huge grounds and that helped me slip into it easier. I like the open spaces as it gives me a chance to run and use my skills, so I feel I slipped into WAFL footy reasonably well."

Anthony is the best kick in the East Fremantle side and one of the best in the competition and he believes the whole side needs to improve in that area to become even better going forward.

"Ever since I was young I have prided myself on my kicking and right through the juniors I was always an efficient ball user. I probably never got it as much as other guys, but when I did I used it well," he said.
"I just had to work on getting more of it to have a bigger impact in games and I feel I'm doing that now. Our disposal has killed us over the last few years as a club and the opposition has been able to sit back and let us turn the ball over moving forward and hurt us on the turnover. If we can get a higher skill level and hit our forward targets more often we can be an even better side, so that's what we are working on."

In his time at East Fremantle, Anthony has seen the likes of Josh Kennedy, Mitch Clarke, Andrew Swallow, Patrick Ryder, Rhys Palmer, Chris Masten, Bradd Dalziell, Cale Hooker and Harry Taylor all get drafted, and he is hopeful of following in their footsteps despite being 21.

"I always felt I could play at the level after seeing my mates get drafted and getting the chance. While it was disappointing not to be picked up myself, I was happy to see my mates get a chance so it wasn’t all bad," he said.

"Seeing guys like Taylor, Hooker and Dalziell picked up as mature aged recruits gave me the confidence that I could make it if I worked harder, so that's what I've been trying to do. My big aim is to get drafted but I've tried not to focus my thinking on that too much and I just want to finish off the season by playing good footy and hope that comes at the end of the year."

It won't be the end of the world for Anthony if he isn’t drafted, though, as he will turn his focus once again to helping East Fremantle win its first flag since 1998.

"If I wasn’t picked up I would keep playing at East Freo with my best mates and try to help us win a premiership," he said.

"WAFL footy is still a good standard so it would be amazing to play in a flag. We were close to doing it in the reserves last year, but that ended up being a tough day. We had a good side in but in the end Broadhurst kicking seven was the difference between the teams. I also lost a grand final in the colts a couple of years earlier, but at least I played in a couple of colts flags back in Geraldton."

Perthnow:thumbsu:

Anthony has got to firming as a certainty to be picked up, surely?

Looks like my ramping has done its job...

Someone will get a bargain with him...
