What's not good about terrorist's walkie talkies exploding? Sounds like genius to me.

It wasn't just one batch of Hezbollah pagers they accessed at some point and tampered with.

It's become a lot more complicated and will be necessary imo, to find out how they did it.

I doubt it counts when you're booby-trapping terrorists.
Everyone is covered by IHL and IHRL regardless of whether they are terrorists or not.

Best to just wait for all the information before judging cases like this. It's pretty unprecedented as far as I am aware.

Obviously they had someone on the inside that told them which pagers went to Hezbollah operatives.

Operationally what has this done to Hezbollah? If it mostly shuts them down the Lebanese government will be very happy.

Letter from Iran to the United Nations Security Council, in response to the pager attacks. I've underlined references to the rules.

The following quote can be attributed to Lama Fakih, Middle East and North Africa Director at Human Rights Watch:
“Customary international humanitarian law prohibits the use of booby traps – objects that civilians are likely to be attracted to or are associated with normal civilian daily use – precisely to avoid putting civilians at grave risk and produce the devastating scenes that continue to unfold across Lebanon today. The use of an explosive device whose exact location could not be reliably known would be unlawfully indiscriminate, using a means of attack that could not be directed at a specific military target and as a result would strike military targets and civilians without distinction. A prompt and impartial investigation into the attacks should be urgently conducted.”

Btw, this isn’t the thread.

Uh Huh Yes GIF

They're in use by the tens of thousands in hospitals all around the world.

NHS had around 130,000 as recently as 2019, and apparently many doctors are loathe to replace them with mobile phones. The North American market is worth about half a billion in revenue.

More widespread than I imagined. Wifey works as a nursing unit manager in a private hospital. Haven't seen a pager on a doctor / surgeon there since about 2006.

I posted the relevant links on booby traps and other devices yesterday, in consideration Israel may have breached those specific rules.

Nothing on the Geneva Convention yet that I can find, unless it's about the weight of the explosive but we might be completely on the wrong track thinking there was any explosives in the pagers.

This isn't the only hospital in Beirut but let's be a bit cautious.

At a crucial time when AUBMC physicians, nurses, and staff have been fully mobilized to deal with the aftermath of today’s injuries, several malicious social media outlets have started spreading rumors and conspiracy theories about the types of communications systems AUB has in place, attempting to link AUB to this tragic event. The university categorically denies these baseless allegations.Following are the facts. Our paging system infrastructure was upgraded in April 2024. The Go-Live for switching to the new system took place on August 29, 2024. The scope of this upgrade was to enhance emergency and code communication, as several devices and systems had become obsolete. The American University of Beirut Medical Center has received over 160 seriously injured individuals over the last three hours, with more to come. Our full focus must be on saving lives and caring for the wounded to the best of our ability. Rather than waste time spreading baseless rumors, we urge all to rally to support AUBMC and the heroic but overwhelmed medical system in Lebanon.

It's not just the pagers though and it can be considered done with, as an isolated event and the lesson's learnt. They're blowing up walkie-talkies as well.

Not really. Israel has committed many targeted assassinations, covert operations, and attacks such as bombings in foreign States over the years. This technique is different but the intent, outcome and consequences are the same.

They're under a lot more scrutiny these days due to their actions in Gaza

A single assassination would be difficult to actually pin someone on, I think this attack is different. It could only have been an Israeli government sanctioned operation.

There's nowhere else to go IMO.
