One of the United States' most senior navy commanders has said he would like Australia to carry out naval patrols close to territory claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea - a move that would provoke significant anger within the Chinese government.

Sailing within 12 nautical miles constitutes a challenge to territorial claims as this is the distance sovereignty extends from land into the sea.

Admiral Aucoin's comments go considerably further than any US figure has done before. Admiral Aucoin, who is visiting several cities including Canberra, said he was discussing the South China Sea with Australian counterparts but had "not specifically" discussed patrols within 12 nautical miles.

As commander of the 7th Fleet - the US's largest - Admiral Aucoin is in charge of the two US ships that have so far carried out such patrols.

Admiral Aucoin also vowed that the presence of Chinese missiles on islands would not deter the US from continuing freedom of navigation operations.

He said he was surprised and concerned by the "scale and speed" of China's island-building, which he condemned as "destabilising".

Is it wise to poke the sleeping dragon? I would of thought not.

Korea, Japan, Philippines, Laos, Vietnam, india, Tibet, Taiwan etc all have china grabbing land and asserting dominance over the region.

At what point should this be stopped and by whom? Who knows but it's best resolved by diplomacy than war but diplomacy without muscle and a united voice is generally weak.

You answered your own question.

Divide and conquer sounds like a clear win for china in that case.

Will Japan and co come to our aid I our time of need if we don't act now? A united voice is stronger and may prevent war

If your referring to the dairy.....we didn't sell it to them.

The Chinese bought it from other foreigners

You named 8 countries who are currently having an issue with China re land; you believe Australia should step up and fight China rather than the 8?

The united voice is the 8 countries standing together rather than Australia spending billions of taxpayers dollars to get involved.

I personally don't support the defence force spending billions. I also don't support not being prepared for inevitable conflict with china.

We can do this much better but the electorate won't support it.

I'm not necessarily opposed to it - for the simple reason that giving them an interest in Australia makes it against their interest to be in conflict with us.
