He means Jordan Kelly - pretty sure that's a report from either here or Woof that made its way on Fb.
Stringer is killing it as a forward this pre-season

I hate the anti Boyd stuff hes played his guts out for us and like most players he has his deficiencies'.
He didn't have AFL handed too him he
made it the hard way.

Yeah beaser , the good thing about getting to my vintage , you can see B/S a mile away.
This bloke has been a wonderful player for this club.
And I will add , no doubt the young guns will go past him soon ( we all better hope ) but what I have seen of training he still has a lot of them covered for power and endurance.

It's strange that the only report is from woof about this practice match, especially if Stringer kicked 6 in the first half. Not even a tweet from Stevo (staphy)!

Question for training watchers, how is the connection between our two main forwards (Boyd and Stringer) coming along, is Boyd playing the deeper option with Stringer being that hit up target on the lead and also how is Stringer kicking the majority of his goals (contested marking/leading target/stoppages) because I think he has the rare ability to kick goals from all of those opportunities, when many of the great forwards can only do a couple of these things.

If this practice game went ahead and Stringer did kick 6 in a half (which really is in a quarter of a normal game) The players who played on him shouldn't be sighted in the seniors all season.

I think your question is far too complex to answer at this stage. We haven't seen enough evidence under match conditions to make any worthwhile assessment. You may get a better idea after the NAB Challenge games.

I understand the positives that may be gained by training Tom Boyd in the ruck....but I have my reservations about it usefulness both in the immediate future and long term. I think I might wince everytime he goes up against an AFL monster while he's still learning the game at the highest level.

This would really only be a forward ruck role you'd hope, like a JPOD etc, just to minimise the lengths Minson has to run around the ground and utilise him to create a quick kick zone defence at the top of our forwardline.

Like you i'd be very reluctant to see Toyd in a resting ruck role anywhere outside our 50M..

Roughead and Redpath really should be doing the majority of this role, I only want to see Boyd on occasion ruck in the forward 50 for boundary throw ins and stoppages.

I'd be surprised if they played match sim on Saturday after playing Thursday. The guys went hard Thursday.

Stringer and boyd were working well together, alternating between playing deep and working up the ground.
Gotta get their match endurance up maybe?

Boyd will improve with time, the questions being asked about him are about 12 months to early.
He has worked very hard on his fitness, has tried his guts out to improve in all areas.
I know the club has been very happy with his attitude and effort.
We as a club cannot ask anymore than that, Boyd will take time, I thought we all new that.
The one thing that I have noticed during match practice, he has certainly straightened us up, something that was sadly lacking.
I believe the two KPP we should be concentrating on are REDPATH and TALIA both are vital to us this season, if they can stand up, we will exceed a lot of expectations.
The fast tracking of the development of both these boys has been very impressive under Beveridge.

I've been very impressed by Talia on each occasion that I've been down to training. I hope he's given a chance to build some continuity in his game at AFL level - it's critical that he feels he's being rewarded for effort & form.

Hows his one on one defending progressing, I think that its vital that he makes sure he is working on that first and foremost because in my belief he should be taking the Nick Riewoldt, Taylor Walker, Jeremy Cameron types.

Yeah I think this sounds like the way to go. I know we all want a proper 2nd ruck/forward and of course I do too, but I'm just not sure it will work too well with our current ruck stocks. Don't get me wrong Minson is a machine but we all know he isn't much chop in other positions so its not ideal to partner him with someone like Campbell, seeing as they both need to spend a fair bit of time in the middle but then were losing too much around the ground. In saying that if Minno is going to spend a bit more time forward this year and Campbell has improved his fitness and mobility, well it could be really really effective.

Then theres Cordy, he's the interesting one because we just don't know what were going to get. He really does strike me as one of those big dopey talls who are labelled spuds but then finally step up and find a role (whether thats as a support forward, or a ruckman etc) in their mid-late 20s. He's had 2 preseasons and a whole season injury free now so theres not really any more excuses and he just has to perform. If his game comes along and he builds on last year he might just play some good footy as a proper forward/2nd ruck. While I'm excited at that possibility, theres no way I'm penciling him in until his improvements start to show on game day.

So I do have confidence in a Campbell and Cordy partnership in the future (need to find another young ruck and/or forward/ruck to start developing this offseason for sure though) just think maybe at the moment we'd be better off with Minson carrying most of the ruck (but less than last year) and Redpath/Boyd giving him a decent chop out. I know no one likes Boyd in the ruck and I don't really either, but in saying that he's a 200+cm forward, in this day and age those guys have to do a bit of ruckwork. It allows Boyd to change something up and get in to the game if he's being well held (I sound like Robert Walls) and allows us to play with a different set up up forward if things aren't working (push Stringer and/or Bonti deep, open up the forward line for our smalls, etc) and like Bev said just because he's our million dollar saviour that we really do need to pay off, we can't just wrap him in cotton wool. We've got to treat him as we would any other player to develop him right. Also not to mention he is a pretty good tap ruckman, theres a lot to work with.

I don't mind Reds work in the middle, his tapwork isn't spectacular but he puts in a lot of effort and his follow up work is good, just becomes another big body in the middle to do some damage (I suspect this is why we have had him playing on the ball a bit in the match practices). So I think Minno still playing a lot of the game as the main ruckman, which is when he plays his best footy, Redpath doing most of the back up work in the middle and Boyd doing most of the forward 50 work. At times still send Boyd into the middle but I'd prefer to see him out of there as much as possible. Minno can rest on the forward 50 a lot, meaning he does less work and is better around the ground for it, and can also chop off a few kicks outside 50, just make himself a nuisance up there. But of course we'd also want him to do a bit of ruckwork inside 50 (in important moments, or when were really pressing for goals etc) because he's bloody good up there, sets up quite a few goals and even kicks a few himself.

He's definitely progressed - I'm more confident in his judgement & contested marking now.

He could be the man to take those players, but so could Roberts, who is a better one-on-one defender and a more versatile option. I think both should play, along with Roughie. It gives us a lot of flexibility.

+ Moz as well, could be problematic to go 4 talls/tall medium defenders. As much as I love Moz, both Roberts and Talia should be breathing down his spine.

That's true.

Moz would be the first picked of the four, really. He's got too many credits in the bank to be edged out, and he won't be left to play on the behemoths this year. Who knows how long he could go on for.

Roughead is an automatic selection, so it comes down to one of Talia and Roberts. I'd give Talia the nod at this stage, but Roberts has flexibility on his side.

With Nic Nat, Lycett, Kennedy and McGovern I think we could realistically go in with Talia, Roberts and Roughead to round 1.

Roberts if he's fit, certainly agree.

I think his injuries might have set him back a little this preseason. Hopefully he gets a couple of NAB games into him.
