End of the day would you like Bontempelli in the midfield lining up on Mitchell/Lewis/Langford or do you want him playing at chf on Lake/Frawley while Josh Gibson jumps infront of him all day? He's a midfielder, it makes sense to play him there.

Listening to Eade yesterday, he has a 200cm young bloke he thinks will be a very good midfielder this year. From his description the youngster put me in mind of jarrad grant. At this rate, even Bonti may be considered too small in a couple of years to play midfield if this trend continues.

Its because Gorringe thinks he can play as a midfielder. Hes going to be sorely mistaken when he is beaten to the ball every time, not to mention tackles everyone high. Bontempelli really is the limit on how tall u should be going in the midfield, playing a 200cm player (unless he is dean cox good) in the middle will cause so many problems.

I really don't get the obsession with Bonti to play CHF in future. He has shown already how much of a freak he is in the midfield and he is an absolute weapon there. He could be near impossible to match up on in the future in the midfield and just looks so naturual there. He definiely should be used down the forward line in stints but he will earn his worth in the middle. Nothing I've seen so far suggest he'd a an elite full time CHF option, marking is not one his strengths. His ability in packs and tight situations plus his freakish skills make him the perfect midfielder. Just think has already shown he will be an elite midfielder.

Agree with you there... Pretty sure you will find he battled as a fwd at TAC cup level and its only after they threw him in the midfield that he started to blossom towards the end of the year.

Bont's can be an absolutely freak at times in the forward line and it will be a vital string to his bow as he grows as a player but as others have said playing him as a KPF takes away his unique skillset. Would love to see him rest forward but not for long periods of time. He will be the sort of guy the coach gives complete license to roam the field wherever he will most impact the contest. As we saw in certain instances last year, against the run of play he even has the ability to head back as a loose man and control the game.

While I am not suggesting that skills wise Matty, Lin etc in our squad, could be described as 'silk'. I think the criticism being leveled at them on BF forums, is often totally over the top.
All players, in every side, occasionally make what turn out to be poor decisions in the heat of the moment, or fluff a disposal. For some reason, many players have these errors completely overlooked, while others get a reputation as poorly skilled players on the basis of few, or no more clangers.

If guys like Matt, Wal etc, etc, etc were as unskilled at the game as they are portrayed on here, they simply would not be getting games as park players, leave alone the elite level of the sport.

Personally my biggest frustration with Matt is not his disposal per se, but his tendency to waste time waggling his finger at guys further up field when in possession, rather than quickly moving the ball forward.

While I don't think anyone should be above criticism, I do think we could/should cut these guys a bit of slack. The fact is, pretty much none of the players who are so regularly the targets for these 'keyboard experts' are just the hacks they get described as on here, and, if our coaches are any good at all, the players skills should all be improving anyway.
I think a lot of the 'warriors' on here stamp a player's papers, or make up their minds on them early, and rarely bother to look again, their opinions set in cement.
A focus on one negative aspect of any player's skill sets, often blinds people to a hell of a lot of positives the same players possess.

wow
if he can become a midfielder, look out
suns mids are already stacked with talent

I get to watch a lot of the Gold Coast games and I just don't think he has it to be a permanent mid. He doesn't have the skills nor the awareness required to play as a midfielder and he would be so back in the pecking order I just don't think hes going to get the opportunity. Hes not like Bonti in that hes clean below his knees. Hes walking a fine line IMO and I don't see him at the gold coast next season.

This, give him complete freedom to do what he wants as he assess the game situation. Maybe he think's his tagger/opponent is getting the better of him so he will chuck himself forward to kick and few. Maybe he can sense the other team is getting on top and he wants to float back and provide a calm cool head. He will be a leader in the future and starting in the midfield is just his best go.

Bingo. Same with Stringer I hope. As an opposition coach you would much rather be able to plan for Bonts and String to be permanent forwards rather than running into the forward line whenever they liked, and the way we are planning to move the ball on and encouraging players to make options for the ball carrier, that could be quite a lot.

I have a found a massive flaw in the Gold Coast master plan........they have Josh Fraser as an assistant. Phew!
Josh Fraser over Minno - thank you GCS list management

In an ideal world if he's playing CHF he isn't going to be deep in the 50 wrestling with Lake/Frawley and having Gibson drop back into the hole or come over the back to spoil. The idea of a CHF is to play in between the lines further up the ground where he can act as the link between midfield and the forward line by providing a marking target and offloading to overlapping HFs/mids or hitting up deep forward targets himself. Bontempelli is the only listed player we have with the tools to play this role.

They've been talking about Ayce Cordy playing on a wing for ~8 years, too.

Unless you're LeBron James, if you're 200cm+ you've got no chance of doing anything more than a few short stints through the centre.

Not true. Crameri, Stringer, Roberts, Redpath, and Boyd can all play true CHF to varying degrees of success and only Stringer has the midfield prowess of Bonts.
