We lost a good one

It's sad that I have to report the loss of a great Carlton lady.

Kath Byers who owned the Notting Hill pub passed away yesterday.
The Nott as it is known was a great Carlton pub and I still remember all the players would come back there after playing at VFL park. I was walking through between bars one Saturday and saw Bruce Doull standing by himself and walked up to him and I don't know why but I thought he would have an accent and was surprised by his Aussie accent.

I was up there 2 months ago with my son and introduced him to Kath and explained to my son that her brother played for the Blues years ago and Kath pulled out a necklace that she wore every day and it was her brother's CFC best and fairest award.

RIP Kath, you were one of those rare people that was loved by everyone, especially your fellow Carlton supporters.

Have been to that pub all of once in my life. It still seems pretty old fashioned driving past. Never heard of Kath but she obviously was a Blue identity so vale to her and all the best to her family. Maybe the club will give her some recognition - they have a bit of a spotty record when it comes to stuff like this.

Nice heartfelt tribute.

Went to the Nott for my first beer with the old man, only been there once but was a great pub and terrfic atmosphere but never had the pleasure in meeting Kathy.

Seems like the kind of person that wouldve touched everyone who met her.

Lovely old girl according to my brother who would have spent far too much of his life at the Nott - to the point where she was probably a surrogate mum. Spent quite a few Friday lunches there myself. RIP Kath.

I remember in years gone by spending many nights at the Nott on Uni Night (Thu) and Kath would wander down stairs and say hello..
I told her how as a child my parents and I would have dinner and that nothing had changed in the 25yrs I'd been going to the Nott, she seemed pleased

Great Publican
Met her at the Nott in the 80's. Went to the pub a week later and see said hi and remembered (guessed) my name.
Had a lot to do with her in the Australian Hotels Association and the Player Partner Organisation

There's a little bar kind of hidden behind the restaurant. Have a beer there, and you would know immediately.

Kath looked after us every Christmas lunch. A superb, old school publican. Classic pub for those who don't know it.

Like others I also have warm memories of Kath who was like a surrogate Mum for many of her student customers. The Pub in my time (late 70s) had an eclectic range from University academics to factory workers and anywhere in-between. She clearly enjoyed the company of all and as has been noted by others let her sensible football support be known. She exemplified one who first of all enjoyed what she was doing and, as a result, was very good at it. In my time The Nott was at various times the leading Pub in beer sales in Victoria but (and perhaps because of it) never lost its "family" feel.

Vale a great lady. Condolences to the Shea family and to her second family of denizens of the Nott. From my days as a little tacker when I called her "Aunty Kath" to her recognising me after about 25 years (mind you I do look at lot like my father - last time I was at the Nott Kath's nephew Paul recognised me and I hadn't seen him in at least that long), I have nothing but fond memories of a true lady and a true Bluebagger.

By the by her brother Keith Shea was by all accounts a champion player - his record certainly shows it.

You can enter from Ferntree Gully Road, but don't go into the Public Bar which is at the corner..unless you intend to that is.

Or through the restaurant( not the bistro).
