After watching the game yesterday and how tough it was i was thinking which players at Carlton can really throw their body around and there really arnt many. Especially in the midfield. Judd doesnt take a backwards step but he doesnt exactly floor people with a hip and shoulder.

You look at Hawthorns steam and half of them just love body contact and the big hits. I just dont think there is enough of that at the blues and would love if we added some bash and crash players to our team this year (ala Chapman, C. Brown, Hodge as examples from yest)

An obvious one i would of though is Kerr. He goes in tough at the footy. Whether we should get him is a question on another thread but I think like Hawthorn we have a bunch of kids that can really grow into those tough nuts.

Armifield and Browne are two tough little units.

Hartlett loves it but has obvioulsy had issues.

Russ does, but doesn;t get into enough contests for it to matter.

I usually run with the mantra that the best defense wins the game.

Yesterday it didn't.

The best midfield will win, and Hawks midfield yesterday was harder and faster than the Cats.

When we win our next flag teams will be saying:
"We need to get some more class in the midfield, and some big Kreuzer type ruck rovers"

Trends come and go. The Hawks bash and crash game plan has a limited life span. Already a lot of them have signs of deterioration - stress fractures, osteiitis etc.

In two years time they won't be able to sustain that type of game.

We should stick to what we do best (when we are winning that is).
Using the ball with skill and class, and smothering opponents in defense.:thumbsu:

When we get Banno back in the team, the comparison between this thread and future threads will be spectacular.

Nope.

Yep.

I think we still need to inject some speed.

Yep.

Richard Hadley. People on this board should watch some of the games from our first few rounds when Hadley played. Don't think many of you recognise how good he will be if he is injury free.

Our future gameplan will be based on run and carry.

Similar to that of the dogs, but with better players to carry it out, and we will have a Fevola to kick to rather than a Will Minson.

We will be the fittest team in the competition and that will be our strength, just like the Eagles of 06-07.

Forgetting a few here I reckon - Joe Anderson, Adam Bentick, Simon Wiggins, Marc Murphy. Real question re the first 3 is not are they hard enough (they are), it's are they good enough?

Campbell Brown
Shane Crawford
Rick Ladson
Sam Mitchell
Michael Osbourne
Cyril Rioli

All of these players are at 17X cm tall, they are all hard running type. Plus they have Sewell and Williams who are at 180cm tall. Small players are vital!!

We have 4 players on our entire list that are 17X cm tall. Murphy, Browne, Blackwell, and Betts. Only Betts and Murphy are on our regular starting list.

We need more of these type of players!!

Agree with the OP to a certain extent - guys like Fraser Brown, Special Fried Rice, Peter Dean etc added genuine hardness and a bit of insanity at the ball, but i don't think it's our biggest area of concern at the minute - that would be our lack of general smarts and our inaccuracy by hand and foot when the pressure's really on. With a couple of more pre-seasons in the gym you'll see Murph, Gibbs, Jammo etc develop some genuine hardness.

Hawthorn didn't win yesterday because they were harder at it, they won because they kicked straight and the Cats didn't - yes it is sometimes THAT simple.

Definitely a MAJOR reason i've been on the Ziebell bandwagon for a while now. We needed pace - we've drafted Army and Browne. Now we need to add our hard edge. ;)
