Autopsy We pissed it in v the pies

Don't usually like to complain much, but I must admit I was in outrage with this being a free.

I'm one of those umpire whingers but I felt as much as we missed tonight we were awarded a few that whilst not evened it up we probably did ok in a 80k Collingwood crowd.

Great win, Heeney has to stay permanent mid.

I am still not sold by Logan and Amartey, even last week we got a lot of goals from the mids. They have the whole season to work on this but they need to kick more goals. Logan 3 freebies and 1 'proper' goal

So you would prefer McDonald rather than run harder to find space, hang back and look for a contested mark and kick a goal…

I've never seen kicking on Gulden's level I reckon

Weighted and across his body after two hours of running
When I die one day, I'd be happy for someone to play a montage of his kicking at my wake. Would be up there for some of the most joyous moments you can have watching footy when you watch artists that can kick the footy like he can at will.

The guy is a superstar already and he is just getting started.

Loved the intensity tonight, and if we keep it up for the next three weeks and be the 5 and zip we should be aiming to be, we will have set ourselves up for a great season.

In amongst lots and lots and lots of good things happening - two signs of the growing maturity of this team, and the ability it has to challenge.

1) That lower-mid experience group of players that look now like they are bonafide AFL players, with the strength to go toe to toe with the best players out there, and be able to nail tackles, break tackles, get disposals away to team mates under big pressure. Those parts of the game where the past few years we've struggled at times with - players not being able to execute because of where they are at in their career. Players like Campbell, Rowy, Gulden, Macca Blakey etc. Their bodies are maturing and we've had multiple times over the first two weeks (and there are others too) where plays that haven't come off in previous years have, because they've been able to nail a tackle, break a tackle, execute a fend off. The skills and quality, and a good overall mix across the park has always been there - but the strength is rapidly catching up.

2) We are starting to build a game plan that allows for mid game adaption. Pressure and relentless effort is part of the DNA of this club - it will always be there and a key part. We haven't always had the skills, especially by foot to match that. But we do now - and we are starting to show a genuine ability to carve teams up by foot, in a way that it is very hard for the opposition to do anything about it. We have been deliberate in trying to bring the right players in with foot skills to make that happen. There were a couple of patches tonight where Collingwood worked hard, had us blocked up. And we effectively found a way through by foot, barely giving them a sniff.

Those two facts alone suggest to me highlight the growing maturity in this group of footballers. We've added some experience to balance out some of that inexperience in the off season that will make a genuine difference - but if the 'big leap' we are seeing together from a bunch of guys all starting to hit that point where it just 'clicks' is anything to go by, there is the genuine possibility there is something very special starting to brew.

Strap in ladies and gents, this could be a very special year indeed. It is only early in the year, and a lot needs to go right all year - but if you aren't excited by what we've shown in the first two weeks against two teams expected to be right up there (including the premiers on their home ground), then you are hard to please.

Watching first half now...am wondering if I should go back to game thread to enjoy the melts on wayward kicking.

First quarter was poor all round including poor communication between players with Campbell spoiling mccartin and a few other near misses. The sort of quarter that could have been a "we blew our chance". But we kept at it and ran over them. Huge to see.

Yeah for sure we did have a bit of the rub of the green with a few calls, just felt that free there was pretty soft.

Awesome win (let’s face it, we’d all of taken a 33 pt win before the game).
Isaac, the CHAD, and Rowy were brilliant!!
Errol got better n better throughout the game.
Our defence is looking great, with Tmac & Melican leading the way… Roberts is looking better by the minute (really glad the coaches have backed him in).
Everyone else played their role with great intensity for all 4 quarters.
Geez I love JMac, he’s becoming the heart and soul of the team.
I’m concerned about Hayward, who keeps making bad decisions or silly errors, although he still laid a super tackle that led to a goal.
Lloyd and Campbell will need to lift to stay in the team.
Anyway, HUGE start to the year!! 🤗

Well done Swans, that was even better than last week. I just had a look at your fixture and you should be 7-0 to start the season. Then a blockbuster with the Giants to follow. Its all looking great for footy in NSW. Hope to see both Sydney and the Giants in the top 4 come season's end. Good luck for the rest of the season.

Why would I prefer that, but not every game you will get freebies and youll need to do thigns the hard way

2 weeks in a row he hasnt executed on key actions a fwd needs to do

Amartey iffy too

I'd be disappointed if the coaches weren't quietly concerned about our talls fwd regardless of the win

Its about winnign the flag and its a small worry right now. I said theres the whole season to try address this

If you just looked at the stats you would think it was a pretty close game. No-one dominated anything much. They got more hitouts and centre clearances and we got more tackles, marks inside 50 and one-percenters.
But the game was mostly quite one-sided. They did OK in a few little flurries but the majority of the time their possessions were desperate attempts to prevent us getting the ball off them.
McRae is going to have a huge task preventing them going 0 - 4.
