Go back a month or two and Melbourne were just about flag favourites with many in the AFL media. After they beat us at home, they had their tyres pumped up massively. Their best was more than good enough to play finals this year, they just didn't do enough throughout the year to earn a spot. Had they finished in 8th, I think they would have demolished Port. If you were taking their first pick of next year, you would want to be working off being between pick 12-16. Which wouldn't be close to enough to land Rankine if he has another good year next year at u/18 level.
You see a lot of sliders from their 17th to their 18th year, even if it's only from 'best prospect' to 'top 5-10' (eg SPS, Parish)

That said, I feel Melbourne will be good next year

Amongst all of this, I can believe that we'd ask for Petracca or Oliver in a Lever deal.

I can also believe that we'd be refuted within half a second
It would be gold though if our recruiters had put a $900k per annum, five year deal in front of Petracca. I would happily pay him that! And Melbourne tying up that much cap on Lever.

Melbourne are not going to break the bank to bring in a top line young defender by giving up a top line young midfielder.

They want to improve their team.

Maybe our strategy is to ask for something way beyond the realms of possibility so that the ball has to go back into Lever's court - doesn't look like a deal is going to get done, what are our options? Hope you get through to the target club in the draft. Risk it?

Or do we revisit Adelaide's offer...

They can't be serious can they?

Firstly I think Salem is quite a talented player. I'd be clearing a whole bunch of others before him.

Secondly, they traded 2 (josh Kelly) for Dom Tyson (tbh a bit of an average, vanilla inside mid) + pick 9 (Salem). How can they even be looking to get rid of one of their more talented players?!

SMH...

Now Salem could be a Smith cover

#10 & Salem might get my attention

I'm happy with whatever lever does. It's his win or loss. He's a young kid and rolling the dice on a large contract versus sustained (hopefully) success. It's a big call.
He will net us something good tick
Him leaving won't be that bad tick

All comes down to the trade table.
Get it done

Justin Reid: "We want either Petracca or Oliver in the trade for Lever"

Melbourne list manager Todd Viney: "No way mate, if that's what you're asking for, this is going to be a long, drawn out negotiation."

Reid: "Long and drawn out! Shit! That will impact our other super secretive and important plans! And I'm assuming it might also impact on our future trade negotiations. Would it be possible to get a deal done earlier?"

Viney: "Yes. We can offer you Billy Stretch in a straight swap today"

A few days later

AFL.com.au article: "In a shock move, Jake Lever was traded to Melbourne on the first day of the trade period. The Crows accepted young father-son fourth round draft pick Billy Stretch, who grew up in South Australia, as a straight swap in the deal. Justin Reid described getting the deal done early as important so the Crows could move on to other matters, and to remain in good terms with Melbourne"

That means you are valuing Salem as a first rounder pick. He is a late second rounder for mine. Would prefer the two first round picks please.
As I said, I don't know too much about him. If he's not first quality then pass

Only issue is if Melbourne climb the table. At least we know what the pick is in 2017. Comes down to whether we have a draft target I guess.

Unless they win the flag next year, worst cases would be their pick might be 15-17.

Having an extra 2018 1st rounder (even if late one) means we might be able to interest clubs like Freo, North, etc to trade two late 1st rounders for an early one if they finish low and are rebuilding. Such a club ought to be interested in getting two good 1st rounders compared to one very good 1st rounder (given next years projected draft depth). Even better if we can somehow get another 2018 1st rounder.

There's one thing you are missing, this contradicts the horse
