Week 1 Finals Tips and Crowd Expectations

Geelong vs Hawthorn - 26 points - 75,000
Collingwood vs West Coast - 49 points - 72,500
St Kilda vs Sydney - 7 points - 45,000
Carlton vs Essendon - 52 points - 88,000

Because 90,000 is a huge amount. A non-series ticket Elimination final is not going to get 90,000. Even the 1999 Prelim only drew 80,519, and the 2000 Prelim 84,778.

Yeh but '99 we (Carlton) didn't have a chance in hell - everyone was expecting a 12+ goal flogging.

2000 - Kouta and SOS gone for the year playing a team that had lost one game all season.

Also prelims are like 80 bucks a ticket vs 44? for this Sunday.

Are you saying that if Carlton/Essendon played in a prelim this year in a 50/50 game it would only draw 82k? Carlton/Essendon would sell out easily. You need to go beyond just pure stats sometimes.

my tips
Cats v Hawks - Cats 18 points. 77k
Pies v Eagles - Pies 74 points. 61k - Most Collingwood supporters can only afford to go to one finals game per season and save up for the Prelim.
Saints v Swans - Swans 3 points. 37k
Blues v Bombers - Blues 49 points. 89k

Geelong vs Hawthorn -13 points - 79,000
Collingwood vs West Coast - 8 points - 76,000
St Kilda vs Sydney - 7 points - 46,000
Carlton vs Essendon - 32 points - 89,000

Considering that Hawthorn/Geelong have more members than Carlton/Essendon, its on a Friday as opposed to a Sunday and its a Qualifying Final as opposed to a meaningless Elimination Final (where the winner will inevitably get knocked out by West Coast the week thereafter) its certainly a chance...given that the 2 Essendon/Carlton games drew 76,000 to the 2 Hawthorn/Geelong 71,000 its probably unlikely, however it'll be close.

The largest Elimination Final ever under the current finals configuration was 84,000 in 2006 (Collingwood V W Bulldogs)

Dimitrou said Carlton Essondon will be the biggest Elimination Final ever as the Tickets are flying out today. AFL section sold out in 41 minutes.

Going to be a huge crowd and the Dawks and the Handbaggers could only dream of pulling a crowd like that. :D:D:D:D

Before the Filth supporters get on and tell us they could pull those crowds to. Im talking about the Dawks supporters and their large supporter base will never top the top 4 Melbourne sides. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Nice to dream hey DAWKS :p

The AFL Members section of the MCG sold out in 45 minutes for Sunday's Elimination Final. There is no way the crowd will be < 80,000.

Geelong vs Hawthorn -10 points - 80K
Collingwood vs West Coast - 21 points - 69K
St Kilda vs Sydney - 9 points - 48K
Carlton vs Essendon - 1 point - 93K

Alot of love for the Dons

Geelong defeat Hawks 25 Points 80K
West Coast Defeat Pies 10 Points 80K
Saints Defeat Swans 11 Points 50k
Blues Defeat Bombers 40 Points 90K

Hawks to defeat Geelong by 34pts 80K as it will be wet.

Collingwood to def. West Coast by 37pts 60K

St.Kilda to def Sydney by 8pts 46K

Essendon to def Carlton by 10pts 82K

Two finals will be beltings. Carl v Ess (bias or not, Ess aren't that good) and Coll v WC (Pies are classes above). The other two really hard fought.

Geelong by 7 72k
Collingwwod by 65 65k
Sydney by 6 45k
Carlton by 50 84k

That was 11 years ago. Things change over time, you know.

Like Essendon playing their first final in Victoria since 2004, and Carlton playing their first since 2001. Has been a long time since I've seen each set of supporters so keen.

Well looking at Tickets sold I think the crowd expectations will look like this

Geelong Vs Hawthorn 75,000
Saints Vs Swans 40,000
Collingwood Vs West Coast 70,000
Carlton Vs Essendon 90,000

Cats/Hawthorn game isn't selling as well as I expected. What's going on Hawthorn supporters? Seems like you boys were only blowing hot air in all the membership and crowd threads.
Tigers big 4, Hawthorn best of the left overs.

I would guess it would be lower because Geelong supporters always struggle to go to Friday night. It will probably be about 60% Hawthorn supporters

The Collingwood game is the series ticket match. Isn't that about 10,000 extra included in the total?

Looks about right.

By way of comparison, NRL finals sales as of about 10pm last night are (courtesy of LU boards) as follows:
Dragons v Tigers: 27k
Broncos v Warriors: 44k
Sea Eagles v Cowboys: 8k
Storm v Newcastle: 16k

The only respectable figure in that lot is the Broncos game, unbelievable that Sea Eagles ticket sales are only in single figures. Storm game is up against Blues/Bombers so if they crack 20k they're doing well.

Correct, not sure the exact number, but its around 10-15k.

Hawthorn and Geelong had sold 55,500 tickets for Friday night, while Collingwood versus West Coast had sold 58,600 - the latter number inflated by the sale of series tickets. 30,400 tickets have been sold for the St Kilda-Sydney elimination final at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

According to that article the AFL expects 65-70k for Geelong v Hawthorn. Personally, I'd be a little surprised if they got under 75k. Even allowing for not as many Geelong fans being able to go because of it being on Friday night. They got 63608 for the Geelong- St Kilda final last year, which was also Friday night, but in terms of supporter numbers, Hawthorn comfortably outnumbers St Kilda.

As for my predictions

Geelong 15.11 (101) def Hawthorn 13.12 (90)
77641

Collingwood 15.14 (104) def West Coast 12.9 (81)
67539

St Kilda 10.10 (70) def Sydney 9.10 (64)
41536

Carlton 13.13 (91) def by Essendon 14.10 (94)
90217
