Fun facts

Greg Clark has now had the longest ever wait for his first WCE win - 16 losses and counting.

The most WCE games without a win by a non-current player is Greg Harding with 9 losses.

They’re the only two Greg’s we’ve ever had. So West Coast Eagles named Greg are currently 0 wins from 25 games.
Imagine getting drafted to play AFL, playing 2 seasons, nearly all of the games in your second, and getting de-listed without a single win.

Poor fella.

well, to be fair on us, Greg Harding was a Dockers reject so we were up against it trying to get a win with him...

Poor fella.

At least he played games.

Brad Smith was recruited as a mature-age, power forward, to support our star-studded midfield. Did his knee in his first pre-season, and missed all of 2005, including (obviously) the grand final... where he could easily have made a big difference. Did his knee again the follow year, and missed all of 2006 (and again, of course, the premiership).

He was then delisted.

So not only did he wait until he was 26 before he was drafted, but he was given only two years, didn't get to play a single game and missed out on two grand finals, and potentially two premierships.

He went back to the WAFL, won the goal kicking award two years in a row, won two premierships in a row, and was the Simpson medalist in 2008... so despite two knee reconstructions, was still a pretty handy player.

Brad Smith was a gun. Would've kicked a stack of goals in the AFL with our midfield feeding it to him. Great on the lead and a great kick.

Was in the days of a max 2 years on the rookie list. Club applied for an exemption due to the back to back knee reconstructions and was politely told to **** off. The AFL were the ones who ****ed us there.

I’d forgotten about that little detail

Now I’m pissed off all over again

The AFL co-incidentally changed that rule the year after didn't they, after we had already de-listed Smith?

IIRC, Smith was on the main list, not a rookie. We asked to put him on the mature-age rookie list, but were denied because mature-age rookies were required to be 23+ (check) and never previously listed (failed). An exemption had previously been granted to Adam Ramanauskas after his cancer diagnosis, so West Coast figured Smith might be granted an exemption too.

The AFL were dicks about it, true. Demetriou was particularly dickish, claiming that two knee reconstructions didn't really constitute "exceptional circumstances". But at the same time, we could have simply renewed Smith's contract on the main list. The AFL were made out to be the villains, but West Coast were at fault too.

Smith went on to kick 126 goals in the WAFL that year, including 7 goals in the Grand Final.

No more Gregs then. Problem solved, onward to the premiership!

This isn't a charity or auskick. If he's not up to it, it's fair game to critique him. Younger players will get a lot more leeway

You haven’t paid much attention to our selection process the last three years ….

And it seems Greg’s the stop sign for our future success…..
