He's really not up to it.

Yep, a speculative draft pick - Greg is giving it everything. But, he hasn't the innate ability to play AFL particularly as a contested mid. People need to take off the rose coloured glasses. Just applaud his efforts as a depth player and mature head.

I much prefer these later speculative picks for a geat tryer than a first pick on a Brander. That was bad list management.

What I don't understand is we drafted him as a strong CBD contested onball player, that had great success in that position in the WAFL.... and never play him there??
For some reason we decided to ignore his strengths and try to turn him into a winger!! He was never a pacy outside accumulator.
Play him on the ball for a month or so to see if he has it at AFL level, because apart from a random appearance in there he is always on the wing!!

With Clark I just think back to the game last year vs Carlton when he came on at 3/4 time as the sub.

Got thrown into the midfield Vs Cripps, and proceeded to be absolutely obliterated.

Cripps had 10+ disposals and a goal going head-to-head with him, and he had played 3/4 more of a game Vs Clark.

It's a feel good story, but Clark shows just how vast the gap can be between a good WAFL player and a good AFL player.

in fairness though... we are talking about an experienced AFL player in his Brownlow winning year, against a guy in his 2nd or 3rd game who is still trying to find his feet... a lot more experienced players then Greg Clark have been obliterated by Cripps!!

If Clark was a kid i'd give him more leeway, but Clark was 25 at the time.

There's no upside to him at this age, he's just not good enough.

Clark doesn't have the clean hands, vision and innate ability to be at the drop of the ball when needed to be a successful inside mid at AFL level. The club recognised it quickly. What he got by with size and extra strength at WAFL level hasn't translated to AFL level. He is a genuinely top bloke though who his gives it his absolute everything, he's just not going to make it at AFL level. A great bloke to have around a club and if we had a proper colts to seniors setup would make an outstanding seconds team captain.

It's why as much are some of these guys are huge whipping boys at clubs I have a huge respect for guys like Hutchings who managed to eke out a very good AFL career almost purely on work rate. Hutchings also had much more footy IQ and defensive skill than a guy like Clark. It's why he made it as a role player and a top tier tagger for a few years. The cliff always comes quick for these types of players though.

One quarter against the Brownlow medallist should not be a reason to judge him when he’s been played out of position for 99% of his time at the top level imo.
Start him in the guts for the rest of the season to see what he can do, and to protect Ginbey etc and then make a decision on him at the end of the year.
The coaches don't believe he is good enough to play in the middle, they are not going to play him there for an extended period just to prove you wrong.

The sooner this spud is back at wafl, the better. He hasn't produced one effort that is worthy of remaining at the top level. Sorry to disappoint.

And what are your AFL credentials?

Guy might not be up to it at AFL, but at least he deserves to be respected for the work he put in to get onto an AFL list.
