It all seems very tin foil, but then they charge Harley with engaging in a melee while no opponent gets fined.

So you check the AFL Tribunal Guideline 2024, and see the definition of a melee/wrestle as “players who are grappling or otherwise struggling with one another in a way that is likely to bring the game into disrepute”.

No player and/or players, and an explicit mention of “with one another”. So multiple players then. But only Harley was involved… And then you start to think ok, maybe they are trying to prove a point. Then you look at the level of protection (read: none) he’s given when three or four oppo bury him repeatedly in the turf, or take off his head.

And then you start looking for discounted tin foil, because we’re going to need a shitload evidently. It’s ****ed what they’re doing to this kid.
Wasn't it the Dockers game where Harley didn't get cited at all even though half of the melees started with him somehow. So it's not all bad

Did he get involved in that, or was that oppo trying to start a melee with him? I think there's a distinct difference between being targeted to put you off your game and going out there looking for a wrestle instead of playing the footy.

In Harley's case he has done both. The melee incident only he was charged for was the Zuurhar one I reckon. Pretty clear that he didn't start that and I think Cam ripped his headband off like a schoolgirl scrap tactic. AFL didn't fine him because they're on the teet and it's essentially moving money from one of their accounts to another.

My understanding is that the 3rd player in (and any subsequent) can get charged for engaging in a melee. 1v1 wrestling is usually ignored by MRO provided it is a short time and no other charges (rough conduct or striking etc).

That said, HR is absolutely given more fines for minor violations than others - and 100% has umpires ignoring blatant frees because it is him. Probably needs to do a bit of the socialising with umpires over pre season that many of the best (and best protected) players have invested in over their careers. Also less back chat (that comes with age also). May not just cost him frees, but a Brownlow one day.

There's Harley in real life, who seems to be a really positive, confident, good-natured guy.
Then Harley according to football media, or the many Harley's?

Lets face reality we will never build a mid that enables him fwd.
Why do you think this?

Draft Draper and another mid in 2025, Peatling + Hutch + Dev with Hewett + Hall as youngsters.
Plenty of potential if we can trade in 1-2 mature mids

Just because we had a weak midfield in the 2010s doesnt mean itll be this case forever

No way. I see him as a full time mid.
Lets face reality we will never build a mid that enables him fwd. Also I want him pure mid.

He is way more damaging as a mid then fwd.

I don't want him having fwd stints. In the future every second he us not mid is a waste or cardio

Literally Dustin Martin..don't build around a Dustin Martin/Petracca type?!

I mean he's generally not super active on socials so I wouldn't read too much into it

Too busy taking steroids and getting face tattoos at the Cas at 3am with UFC fighters from what I've heard.

Harley’s first year reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo’s first year (for all the old soccer fans like me).

Bursts of talent, crazy flair and exceeding expectations in a lot of ways. Also, subjected to a battering because of the way he plays.

However, all this mixed with a degree of immaturity, getting distracted on field and ultimately trying to do too much a lot of the time. Can come across as selfish but it’s more just thinking he is the best option no matter the circumstance.

We unfortunately don’t have Sir Alex Ferguson to harness and develop him but gee whiz I hope the new coach is able to be equal parts nurture/empowering and equal parts hard ass to get the absolute best out of him.

The best players in the game play forward and kick goals as well.

Like Martin, Ablett, Bont etc.

Harley is the type of player that can rest forward.

I can't believe it but he's tracking better then JHF.

He's like playing as good as 2nd year JHF.

He'd like a year ahead of JHF development. So next year he might be delivering what JHF delivered in his third year (this year)
