List Mgmt. Welcome Matt Owies

You didn't run out of list spots you ran out of cap space.

BTW anyone who doesn't like Owies being at the club, you're welcome to blame me.

Wait so your big play to rattle cages just resulted in Owies falling out?

I'd never get mad at him about the trade (as others have said more annoyed how we regarded our pick 3) or wish him anything but the best, but even getting him in isolation isn't a move I love.

His goal and a bit a game will add what it adds but I'd be curious to hear reasons why he'd be a good fit otherwise.

He's low posession, not immense on the pressure acts, not a known leader. Both stats and the eye test other than his goals are all painfully average. I'd be nervous he'd take games off Dewar or the best spots off Long, green shoots that I'd really be wanting to see come on more.

It also feels wonky bringing in 3 27 year olds, think many of us expected Baker/Graham at max then a bit of a view on addressing the 21-25 gap in our list.

Just screams to me of being an Essendon, St Kilda mediocrity acquisition where yeah he likely will make us better this year, possibly the year after, but is he a building block to the next flag or a pressure reliever for next season?

Side note: this is absolute speculation but wouldn't be surprised if Pyke and McQualter have gone down the 'let's go the Geelong approach, make our club great every year' path which is fine if you're Geelong but we're not. A winning culture kind of needs to come from performance first before it can reliably be used to sustain performances the way Geelong have.

Stinks of "moneyball" TBH.

"Oh look, a late-20s small forward who kicks 33 goals a year and is about to be delisted from his club for better prospects. Better jump all over that one!"

That we gave multiple year contracts to the likes of Fantasia and Durdin over him speaks volumes of our too often list management **** ups.

Would keep MO over those two every day of the week.

He's a campaigner - but he's our campaigner now. The trade deal is done, no point comparing him and Baker to pick 3.

I rate him, has good goal sense, and hopefully offers more forward pressure than our current forward line.
Pretty much covers what I was going to say.
Welcome on board Matt Owies.
One of those players that can get under your skin as an oppo so now he will get under the oppos skin for us.
Just don't play for the free's so hard, like headbutting the ground in tackles, please.
You can rev the team up and get in the face of the opposition all you like though 😁
Play hard and kick those much needed goals.

The biggest factor is he was going to be cut, so didn't need to be part of the dumpster fire trade.

If it was 63 & 68 for Owies and 73, people might have gone... okay we don't need another small forward so whatever.

But the club obviously saw it as a key the rest of the horrible decision of overpaying for an uncontracted Baker and overpaying pick 3 for 12 & 14 makes it unpalatable

Meh Chelsea Peretti GIF by Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Don't mind this one, basically comes as steak knives. He does have a decent track record kicking goals as a small forward, and we could do with depth in this area as Cripps heads into the sunset.

Good on him and hope he smashes it here.

Speaks well and says all the right things. Comes across as having leadership qualities.

He comes across well, is keen to show leadership on and off field… is something we don’t have.. good get…. Just a shame how we got him

Clearly our best small forward this season. He is the only one out of contract and older than most. Carlton are a painfully slow side, and Owies doesn't help with that. We've kept young and/or quicker small forwards hoping they produce.

It's funny that our two most accurate shots for goal, Owies and Kennedy, are the ones being traded out.
F**k that doesn't sound good.
How slow is he?
This makes me more depressed about this trade and giving him 3 years lmao.

Goals 2023/2024:

Owies:
2023: 27 goals from 18 games
2024: 33 goals from 23 games

Shai Bolton:
2023: 31 goals from 23 games
2024: 34 goals from 22 games

Kysaiah PIckett:
2023: 37 goals from 23 games
2024: 36 goals from 21 games

Jamie Cripps:
2023: 16 goals from 12 games
2024: 27 goals from 23 games

He's more than a Zac Langdon - will be best 22 and more than likely vill the Jamie Cripps void over the next 3 years. Not a superstar but a handy pick up.
2024
Bolton basically played as a midfielder, 51% CBA
Pickett 30%
Cripps 0.2%
Owies 0%

Definitely will go towards replacing Cripps, he had quite a few brain fades that cost us this yr

Is this actually legit, then why him?
Why not Ashton Moir? Did you even enquire about him?
Since 3 is overs for 12 & 14, I think a player like Moir plus late picks should've got it done, maybe another Richmond late pick could've been extracted to give to Carlton. Especially as a player picked in the late 20's, with only 2 games to his name.
As a big Eagles fanatic, surely he would've at least considered it.
Much younger (obviously) and more scope for growth. He would've been a good addition for our rebuild given we basically have only 2 decent picks in the draft.

Hey mate, firstly, hope you're doing okay. Never nice having criticism about your work, let alone the sheer magnitude of emotional outbursts seen here over the last 24 hours. My 2yo has better bladder regulation than some of the posters here.

Secondly, are you able to share what key attributes Owies was targeted for? I've been ridiculing my Carlton-supporting friends for years about how garbage their team is to have him playing for them so regularly, so I'm clearly not seeing something people within the industry are.

edit.

Thirdly, are you able to share his noggin-to-torso ratio? On TV it looks like the biggest scone in the league, but I've never seen that metric recorded.

Good pick up was performing well as a small forward a position we don't have much quality in. Hopefully more support for Noah Long, Liam Ryan and Brockman.

Well at the very least we've recruited a small forward that over celebrates goals and that opposition supporters (and evidently one of our own) want to punch in the head.

Been a while since we had one if them - maybe Ashton Hams?

Gotta have campaigners in ya team, HR, add this lad and Baker, we have tripled our total number of campaigners

You're not wrong. I honestly can't stand the guy, but watching his highlights he does bring an energy to our side that we severely lack - and yes that's being a campaigner that can rev up our team.
