Toast Welcome to Fremantle Neil Erasmus (pick 10 2021 AFL Draft)

Neil’s intent and endeavour can’t be faulted. He is tireless in his attempts to get the ball.

It’s clear that he just needs to do some more work on his disposal efficiency and once his kicking accuracy improves, we will be mighty glad the kid wears purple.

I wouldn't write him off just yet, he's only 19. But that doesn't mean he hasn't shown very little up until this point. Even with Johnson when he came on as sub he showed a few very classy moves, that is enough to get excited about. Erasmus is yet to show anything that shows why we picked him up in the top 10. I don't think there's been one disposal of his that I've seen that's been like, 'wow, that was special.'
I dislike this line of thinking oftentimes. Personally done this to Henry, come to think of it. Top 10 picks should get just as much leeway as any other pick in their first 2-5 years. When is the development finished or reached the ceiling of maximum potential?
Seeing Henry recently proves that players indeed need time and space to develop naturally.

Fans are fickle. Young, Serong, Cerra, Brayshaw came in and became stars ASAP. But like Cerra proven this season, there’s still another step to climb.

Erasmus is this. He’s only 19 and already looking under deterred against big bodied 25+ year old. Jl throwing him into the deep end is great to see.

It doesn’t help that the midfield around him is inexperienced whereas Brayshaw, Serong have had an elite duo in Fyfe and Mundy as mentors.

Ras is not the problem, not the greatest in skills but he at least attacks the contest with intent to win the ball and if he doesnt he tackles hard

I haven't watched him closely in many of his games, but I admittedly put a line through him after last week's performance. The simple reason is his skills and awareness aren't good enough to make up for his lack of leg speed.

His body shape is an interesting one for a footballer. 190cm with a super long torso and short legs. In theory, this should make him a great ground ball player, as well as a marking threat with his height. Hopefully, his inside awareness and touch will become elite, and he can be a player for us. That said, I can't think of many 150-game players with his attributes, Tyson Stenglein, maybe?

His speed is a major issue. You cant play him anywhere else on the field because of it. People have mentioned playing him as a forward, but he brings the same problems as Fyfe as a forward. One potential forward 50 contested mark/possession (that probably results in a turnover or a point) that he brings to the table doesn't make up for the total lack of pressure he brings. Freddy, Switta, and Shooter all apply elite pressure, and if you're not bringing that to the forward line, you need to be hitting the scoreboard.

Maybe he can improve his speed? I'm pretty sure Shooter improved his pace to levels that I would now call elite. I just hope I'm wrong, and he doesn't need speed and becomes an elite defensive mid accumulator like Jack Steele.

Never ever going to write off a young kid but geez he looks slow. Particularly evident when someone quick (like Walker) runs past him like he is standing still.

Reality is that he won 2 out of our 4, 1km time trials in the pre-season.
Others to do well Serong, Chapman.
Johnson and Young were up there too.
So it’s between the ears and how quickly we can pump games into them.
I’d say all of the above could play midfield minutes with Serong.
But they also need the size, and it’s apparent that we need these guys
pushing PB’s. Especially the bench.
Good story on Daicos as a second year player and how he doing this in
the gym.
It’s obvious when it rains, or teams that win contested ball we are pushovers.

1km time trials mean sweet bugger all. You aren't sprinting 1km or even making repeat sprints of 1km in a game. He might have pace over distance but short burst speed is what we need.

Raz will be fine once he acclimatizes to the speed of the game and adds some size which he’ll need for that inside, extractor type role.

Don’t think the wing role has suited his skill set though given his speed and kicking.

The fourth quarter was a positive once he played more on ball so hopefully that builds his confidence.

He generally competes hard and likes to tackle but he can also accumulate and win his own ball - has just been a bit slow to release at times.

Don’t discount the headless chook.

One of my aunts had a rooster that would torment her daily. When grandad went on a cull, and finally lopped the roosters head off, the body got up, and chased my aunt around for a few more minutes.

He really is pretty slow

He's not quick, but I don't think he is much different to many of the bigger mids going around. For example Pendlebury, Wines, Dunkley, Steele, Macrae, Green, Cripps, Taranto, Hopper. Our own big mids of the past in Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow, Crowley.

A lot of that group above are blunt force operators with poor/average skills.

Dunkley/Taranto are my hope. Slowish, 1cm height difference, hack kicks, forward tendencies but don't really play there, like to tackle.

Erasmus' games as non-sub ... 18-15-13-16-12-17 ... average = 15
Dunkley's first 6 games ... 15-12-18-12-14-9 ...average = 13
Taranto's first 6 games ... 13-15-12-18-20-12 ... average = 15

Not really that much different over what is such a small sample size to judge Erasmus.

The criticism of Erasmus is mind boggling.

Grabbing the microscope and putting it squarely over a 19 year old first round draft pick, after 12 games, is mind boggling.

To me, he looks like one of those players who will play 250 games and be considered a "heart and soul of the team" type player. He's tough, got size, loves the contest and has, I'll wager, a heart the size of Phar Lap.

He's got blue blood credentials playing in PSA and under age championship footy and just needs a little bit of time, for some of those skills to come to the fore at AFL level.

Writing him off now is not just foolish, it's mid boggling.

There's no real criticism, no one's writing him off either. Paid a top 10 pick for this bloke and just making the point that I'm yet to see anything that really justifies the pick yet. I'm hopeful, but it is slightly concerning.

Andy Brayshaw averaged 16 Ppg over his first year (17 games)
