I was appalled earlier in the year sitting at Optus & some of the vile invective people were screaming out every time he went near the ball.
Took my wife to her first AFL game vs Sydney. The first thing she mentioned when she got home was how astounded she was that one of the best few players on our team was copping abuse from several crowd members anytime he went near the ball.

I think he'll find every teams fans are exactly the same when you look piss weak as a player. Liam has only pushed his efforts on gameday because he realises (or been told) it's going to up his value at Fremantle and other teams..
Yes he has talent but I don't think he'll defensively ever meet requirements.
Could we sneak into the first round?
brilliant psychoanalysis, please keep it up mate

It's gotten massively worse in the last 2 years imo.

Football aside it was a far better experience in terms of crowd behaviour between 2017-2021 when the crowds were smaller.

When the crowd was full of people "building character" watching their team get bashed up most weeks.

Expectations are a burden.

I have never been a fan of Liam Henry however he has definitely produced some good football since the bye. Full credit to Liam and it seems I got it wrong

He took longer than most to get up to AFL standard and for the club to find a position to suit his skills and talent. As a wingman he is decent at this point of his career with potential more improvement yet to come.

He dosen't get the plaudits of Brayshaw, Serong, Young or Jackson yet because he needs to develop a "body of work" and with that will come the recognition that could elevate his profile to their level.

The club have been patient with Liam, putting plenty of time and effort into developing him and I hope that that means something to him going forward with his football future. I also hope the club can see its way clear to put a decent offer to him that ends in a mutually beneficial new contract being signed soon.

The fact that he is out of contract and managed by Colin Young (I think?) are definitely both negatives.

They were non existent in 2020. I assume that was the joke. I do think the pandemic has made people bigger arseholes though, generally speaking.

If they really want to keep Henry, they should offer him the 4-year journey to free agency deal. Front-ending as a premium option, or back-ending with a bit extra thrown in to allow for the increase that comes with the new CBA.

Front ending contracts and Colin Young don’t mix
You can do it in whatever proportions you feel comfortable with, from moderate to massive. It might just allow a chance to renegotiate in 2 years time to up and add to the figure and length to reward his possible growth and take him beyond FA.

Obviously, front-loading can potentially give list-management leeway later on as the playing group matures. Particularly if they say they're invested in keeping the core young group together.

You are right, but it should be both front and back loaded.
The contract value in the last year prior to free agency is what determines the Restricted/Unrestricted status.

So four years at $400,000 a year structured as:
$700,000 year one
$100,000 year two
$100,000 year three
$700,000 year four

That last sentence sums up why freo are not taken seriously by competitors in this comp.
If you can’t deal with expectations - we should all get used to 11th to 15th each year with the odd unexpected glorious victory.

Ross Lyon taught our players how to deal with favouritism and expectation and still win nearly every week, for a few years in a row.
No one else really has so far

At the beginning of the year in a comp with mates he was my predicted "outbreak" player. I have always hated the fact that people in the members around us would shout "No!", every time Henry got the ball. How are young players meant to develop? An example can be compared to Treacy and Sturt who seem to have the wonder touch. They can take one mark in a game, and it is robbery to drop them? I am not saying I want them dropped, I am just saying the double standards on attitudes towards players really stinks at times.

People that follow the magoos know how highly rated he is.

(Some of) The Freo faithful do it again, pushing players out. Same could be said about Acres (but this was much worse).
Questions about his commitment at the contest are just stupendous. The kid is under 80kg's and playing around the packs. Then he gets accused of racking up easy possessions for WORKING HARD. OMG!

A shame, but I do not blame him leaving either. It would only take one bad game for these supporters to dig their teeth in again. I would love him to stay, as he adds an excitement to our team, especially with the likes of Freddy. Time will tell.

On the flip side of all this “ oh he’s leaving because people ran a critical eye over him “
Is

How about he stays , works his ass off and then gets adored like Sonny . Just as likely to happen.

Supporters are fickle beasts and can flick into the positive just as quickly as the negative.
Screw the past , play for the future .

Maybe he doesn't want adoration from absoulte morons? He doesn't owe us anything. I want him to stay but he really should leave for his own good.

Why ?
I think the opposite
He should stay for his own good
Club is on the up , clearly rates him and most supporters have given him the benefit of the doubt as he gets his act together

He copped no less shit this year than Luke Ryan did at the start who in my opinion is one of the Stalwarts of the club and has earned his stripes

How much shit has Ethan Hughes copped the last few years and he’s stuck with it and it’s paid off . I was one of his biggest critics and this year I reckon he’s one of our MVP’s

It’s just part of the game
And why would it be different anywhere else?
Have you not read opposition boards on this forum ?
They are as vile and nasty as us , some clubs ten times worse .

Yeah you cannot be determining your future based on the vibes from fans ffs.
Spot on but more to the point where is this speculation that is why he’s leaving coming from anyway ?

What’s the main reason 99% of players leave clubs ?

Oversimplification really. Most players will go for a combination of reasons.

Money always has a role of course, because of course it does. They've got a rare, desired, yet finite commodity.

Money is often a gauge on how much they are desired. Who doesn't lean towards someone who (appears) to value you more than someone else?

It's often more than just a suitcase of cash. They get sold a vision, security and excitement of how they can grow and thrive in that new greener grassed environment. How they'll be a vital ingredient in that recipe for collective glory.

To oversimplify once again , two metaphors apply in this circumstance :

Grass always seems greener

And

Better the devil you know

I'm no Henry apologist, but he definitely cops it hard from a few blokes in my area.

I always find it funny that Henry can do ten good things and there's silence, but when he muffs one thing they go off at him. But when Brayshaw, Darcy or Walters stuff something up, it's crickets.

People are strange.
Its called racism!
