So the cost of the Bolton trade is now known (rank in brackets):
Hotton (ACL 16)
Faull (28)
Trainor (20, concussions)

The gain of the trade:
Shai Bolton
Murphy Reid (9)
2025 F3 (should come in a lot due to point matching next year)

Will be interesting to revisit in 3 and then 10 years time.

He’s got the Brodie overhead handball. The Caleb Serong bounce hand pass. Excellent quick clean hands, good decision maker with an accurate kick. Seems to snap accurately, there’s a lot to like.

Struggle to see where he can break into the 22 though. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
There will be injuries...he can play anywhere between the arcs.

Matt Johnson ran a 2.98

He’s not quick, even admitted to doing specialist sprint training in off season. 20m times are not relevant, I wish they’d stop measuring it, you want to know top speed, not standing start to 20m. top speed over 30-40 would be ideal. Who can run down the wing and not be worried about chase down pressure? Who can zig zag run like Butters to evade chasers while still looking up and assessing options.

It might be handy to see the bracketed times for 5m 10m 15m and 20m, I know they measure these with the gages along the length. That 0 to 5m time would be the most eye catching.

Think of Stephen Hill who would seemingly be at top speed after two steps.

A midfielder breaking out of a stationary play with that burst would be quite damaging.

Look devastated which is always scary but I am happy to take the risk. I'll back the culture, especially with Andy and Caleb (and probably others) who will know how to help him settle.

Will be interesting to see how he actually plays given the conflicting pace reports and the fact that draft reports can somehow be wildly wrong. Understand the Pendles comparison. Similar running gait maybe? Moves like him at times but not sure he plays like him. Reckon Serong is a decent comparison off the highlights.

I'm pretty happy. You're doing a lot right if you're metro's MVP. We have a good record picking sliders that Twomey thought should have gone higher.

Has cracking vision from the highlights, good skills and is good around goals. Pretty sure they are things we need more of.
I wouldnt worry about his pace in the slightest. When the draft watchers say say he doesnt have elite speed they are comparing him to the likes of Sid Draper who can explode from a stoppage. Make no mistake Reid covers the ground well Id describe him as quickish but he maintains his speed over a game. Id say like a slightly quicker Brayshaw. Id also say he's quicker than Berry who many wanted as a small forward. One of the most exciting things for us is that he looked super dangerous when playing as a small forward for brief periods last year Just like in his game against SA where he kicked 3 goals. I can see him playing the high half forward role when he first plays afl. In his last mock draft Twomey had Reid at 6 and Id say he gets everything draft related right most of the time.

Amazing to look back at that. Muhammad Ali in his prime had barely any weaknesses.

Not too many Heavyweight boxers had that Ability to dodge punches with ease. Only other Heavyweight boxer I knew that could dodge punches at ease was a Mike Tyson back in 1986.

I just looked up highlights of Mike Tyson vs Mitch "Blood" Green.

Definitely looked flat - then again - might have been angry that Richmond let him slide... Could be a motivating factor for him to be great... Time will tell
I didn't watch it but seriously trying to judge or assess 18 year olds body language is ridiculous on Draft night and I think as fans we need to get better as how we judge the initial reactions to these players.

They would be nervous as hell and the anxiety of will they get picked up or not.

Having the TV & national spotlight on me at 18 years old would have been frightening especially as people are hanging off every word you say.

One little slip up or lack of excitement gets blown way out of proportion.

As a club we need to be able to hold on to recruits from anywhere, otherwise we exclude ourselves from some top shelf talent.

Pretty sure Dave Mundy was Vic metro, as was Andy Brayshaw. Not all of them are mummy's boys like Cerra.

This kid will be part of our first premiership - big incentive to stay.
Mundy from Seymour country Victoria and Brayshaw from WA sporting royalty.

Sliders v bolters

Don’t think we’ve ever done well with ‘sliders’
Good thing he's a bolter:

The Game Cricket 2024-25 Early Bird
"Reid bolted into first-round contention following a sensational season for the Sandringham Dragons and a blistering national championships campaign for Vic Metro, where he was named the side’s MVP and earned a spot in the All-Australian side."

Agreed - a reaction in a highly stressful environment where that stress is not one they are used to is a poor indicator of whether someone will embrace the Freo journey / fit in or not.

Most of the top draftees have multiple casual interviews online these days; that would be a better (but definitely not foolproof way of) assessing proposenity to move / fit in etc.

Class is class, and this bloke just oozes it from every pore. In his highlights packages, his chip kicking on the run to the advantage of his forwards was just sublime! Lots more of that please mate. Welcome aboard Murphy mate, very glad to have you over here. 😎👍

I really hope we have lined him up to play the Gryan Miers role, plus an occasional run through the middle and in that case, it could be an astute pick.

People are saying his 20m sprint time was around 3 second, so he is not exactly slow.

Great looking selection, not sure if the composure results in the clean hands or the clean hands help him look composed, doesn’t really matter, being able to assess options and execute makes him look elite, he’s the antithesis of Emmett.
Welcome aboard Murphy!

Yes, but also it still tells a story. We may just have the story wrong.

I don’t think it was a case of not wanting to come to Freo. More a case of disappointment he didn’t go to Richmond. Just my opinion. Once he was given more than 3 seconds to process it, he’ll be fine.

His reaction was also just a reflection of the whole group. All his mates and family clearly were hoping for a different outcome.
