He just gets his hands to the ball in marking situations. He took two big marks and got his hands to two others that would have been legitimate extremely contested grabs (got a free for one, which was deserved).

That ability to just pluck marks is a rare commodity these days. Once he puts on another 10kgs he will be so hard to contend with, and I think he'll probably have defenders hanging off him regularly by that point.

Even when he doesn't mark the ball he gets it front and centre for the crumbers. Rarely got out marked by Jones which was a positive.

So many times he lead up to be an outlet on the wing and while he doesn't complete the mark he was able to bring it to ground to a Worpel/Newcombe to run onto.

I was trying to work out why i was so hyped up after the game yesterday, was it the win? Partially. I realised how pumped I was after Calshers debut. He really contributed, he’s got some real tools and knows what to do. Finally we see a father-son to get really excited about, then there’s the emotion of how he got there. Plus, he’s still got a lot maturing to come physically. He belongs.

There’s something to be said for a player who continually jumps at the ball like Calsher does.

Even the mark he took to kick his first, he tried to take it at the highest point by leaping to mark and twisting his body in flight.

This is a great trait to have for a key forward.
The thing that struck me was the fluency. There was nothing mechanical or awkward about it. Perfectly timed leap, and clean one grab, in full control of his movement. Never looked like dropping or double grabbing it.

Loved seeing just how much he was enjoying himself out there. Just a young kid doing what he has always dreamed of. Was a great debut for a raw player who we probably thought would spend this year just developing and building up strength.

Hats off the club too for getting Gunny back, sounds like he's been pivotal in Dears development and growth as a player.

I was already excited by the mark he took on the back flank 2 minutes into the game. A big contested mark at the highest point so early showed me he had something. Then the goals topped it off

He looks a more natural forward than Ramsdenm Chol & Lewis do, moves really well and wasn't scared to launch at the footy.
There's so much to like with his game yesterday.
It's still way to early to get really excited, but there was a lot to like. Get a bit of side on him, continue the Gunston tutelage, and we might find the long term key forward for us

That’s the first time I’ve heard anyone mention Greg. Did he actually have a bit of a falling out in the end there?

Also, I hope he keeps the 35.
Loved watching Morrissey at work. Not the most consistent of players but mercurial and almost impossible to defend when on. Looks in pretty good shape. I agree about 35 - make it a keeper.

In the next 5 years our forward line shall consist of Ginnivan, Watson and Dear. That is rather exciting! Probably not as good as 06/07 when we had Buddy and Rough developing together, but it’s still rather exciting. I think we need another tall down there, whether it be Lewis, Chol or even DGB, who knows? It’s why I was a little bit disappointed that we couldn’t have snagged Curtain as well last year.

That was the most exciting debut since Bud came onto the scene.. The emotion was there, he displayed all the traits you want from a KPF in terms of work rate, leading and getting back, marking at the highest point, kicking action, tackle pressure when the ball hit the deck… also gave a chop out in the ruck.. Outstanding.. He has top 10 traits and some qualities that a top 10 pick may lack… Moment of the Hawks season so far when he kicked that first snag!!

people - we do get a little ahead our selves.

He may not win a Normie or Brownlow.....just 200 games and multiple premierships. I am still high after his game.

I don't have a problem with people getting ahead of themselves about a player so long as it doesn't turn to abject toxicity a week later, as seems to be the case here sometimes.

Watto is a prime example. Some posters, granted a dickish minority, couldn’t wait to sink the boots in when he didn’t kick a bag on debut.

It took me a moment to process who it was and what just happened.

Pretty sure I'll watch the replay tonight and watch that grab on repeat 😄
