Go do your own 22, then think about who has to either miss through injury or form for Cody to get into the side.

There’s a lot of players ahead of him, and we’re not in the mode of giving games to kids to fast track them regardless of form, like we were 18 months ago so he will need a bunch of players with more seasoned bodies to either be injured or in a form slump to go past them.
This. Even if Day, Nash and Mackenzie are injured or in poor form. Cody would need Maginness, Ward, Hustwaite, CJ, Morrison to also not be playing well at Box hill in order to get in. Late last year CJ, Day and Mackenzie were out for the finals and Finn, Ward and Morrison who were stars pretty much everytime they played VFL came in and did a job.

Sounds a bit like a queue. I don't think it works like that.

Each player has a set of attributes. It is up to team selectors to consider not just form but also what attributes are needed to optimise the team's prospects in a specific game against specific opponents. Cody can bring forward defensive pressure but can also score and contribute in the rotations. That is quite a potent mix and may earn him a spot earlier than you think. As I have previously said, his form in training, practice games and VFL will also be critical.

Not an honest take. None of those guys are pressure forwards, though maybe Finn and Morrison might be around the mark.

He’s unlikely to be playing midfield right away even if he debuted 3 years from now.

If he gets a run, it will be forward at a guess.

Not looking to state the obvious, but how likely did 95 percent of the board think Dear was to get a run last year? The argument went on right up until he was named.

Good form often gets rewarded.

If we’re going to go round in circles, that seems at least worth considering. I think we’d all agree he’s a chance to play forward if we get a couple of injuries among our smalls.

I agree it’s that’s combination of being able to apply serious defensive pressure, a seeming knack for kicking a couple of goals a game along with having the ability to go into the middle for short bursts that has me interested. That’s quite an unusual combination of abilities.

Of course he will have to earn his spot the same as everyone else and he evidently needs to put in quite a bit of work on his fitness which will be a pretty big hurdle to jump.

I’m not looking to state the obvious either, but are people forgetting that Dear is the exception, not the rule, and only came into the side due to injuries AND his good form, to play a role we were light on for personnel.

Cody doesn’t play a role we are light on personnel for so I’ll revisit my early point and say he is highly unlikely to play 5-10 games in 2025 unless we have a string of injuries and host of players out of form that he can bypass.

Just to add - the fact that Cody is unlikely to get a game next year is actually a positive. Our list is looking great atm. Cody getting a game probably equals large portions of our list either being injured or under performing. I’m hoping Cody DOESN’T get a game for this reason

On the other hand, one could easily make an argument for it being a positive if Cody is pushing hard for an AFL spot and subsequently earning himself a few games based purely on merit. Pressure on spots is never a bad thing and if Cody is amongst those ensuring the incumbents don’t get complacent, I can’t see how that would be a negative.

I can understand and would indeed agree with an argument being made for a 2025 AFL spot for Mraz, who will need a pre-season or two under his belt before he’s ready, being unlikely and indicative of either injured or woefully out-of-form defenders. In the context of KPPs, I’d also concur with SYL’s view, in the post above yours, of Calsher’s debut season being an outlier.

Cody, however, is a mid with an AFL-ready body, possessing traits, such as speed and manic tackling, that would easily translate to the role of a pressure forward if the need arises.

Allow me to pose a hypothetical question: If we’d drafted a ‘big-bodied midfielder’ - say someone similar to Reuben Ginbey, whom the faceless Fox Footy crew was so enamoured with in 2022 - in the first round of the 2024 draft, would your expectations around his first year output be higher than what they appear to be for Cody? Before you answer, it’s worth considering our track record with players we’ve picked up either late in the ND or in rookie draft or in the MSD.

In terms of Cody’s prospects for 2025, I’d prefer to say: No limits.

Update...

The United Nations has now granted Eldorado emergency powers to delete pointless posts about how many games Cody would/should/will/might/could concievably/possibly/probably play if /there are injuries/ he stars at Box Hill/ the senior squad plane crashes in the Andes/the black death hits/ next year.

This moratorium will apply until such time until his exploits are actually witnessed on the sporting/training field, and informed empirical evidence can be brought to bear on hitherto unfalsifiable projections, which are ****ing this thread right up.

What about Matt Hill, could he get a game early ...

Are you declaring martial law?

Was just a play on words. I don't have any issue with your stance here!
No, that's fine...

It was more about me not realising until this morning that martial law was declared in South Korea....hence the martial law -Seoul references

🤦‍♂️

Try to keep up, Eldo
