It’s not a second position to “rest”.

Unless you’re a key forward / defender or ruck the expectation of all modern players is to play multiple roles and contribute.

One dimensional players are very rare nowadays. If you can’t play multiple positions, you’d want to be elite at your one position.
Which he isn't, and he can barely even rest in a 2nd positon, let alone play it well.

I don't think we've tried Worps as a stopper. Does he have the tank? Seems to have the other attributes. Would allow Finn to spend some time as a clearance mid.

He did it during 2021 after a bit of a slow start.

Went ok but nothing really outstanding.

Sam wants to play people to their strengths. Worps didn’t win a best and fairest by fluke he has assets. He is tough he can explode and he can distribute by hand and set the kickers away. He needs a tough conversation to say you aren’t a kicker but you are a bull get us the ball give it to Ward MacDonald Amon Morrison newk etc and enable them to go to work. This is his chance to get back to being the valuable inside piece we desperately need. He also needs to add some pressure forward craft he would be a great forward pocket locking it in too. So keen to see James succeed.

Sam wants players to play multiple roles as that’s what our 2008 - 2015 mids were able to do. That flexibility was one of the keys to our success.

Could be robbing Peter and not even paying Paul.

Worpel needs to get back to what he does best, an inside contested ball winning mid. If he doesn’t I don’t think he has a spot in the team. Finn has shown to be a very good stopper so far with small glimpses in the rest of his game. Fingers crossed he develops a more well rounded game but I’m not sure Worpel should be a stopper and I’m not sure Finn is ready to step up as a clearance mid

The conversation I was adding to was about a 2nd role for Worps.

I think he might be the type to has to shoulder the load to excel. Post his 2019 season, the thought of Tom Mitchell working in tandem with him seemed like a mouth watering prospect at the time. Sadly and inexplicably in didn’t turn out that way. I just hope he can develop some sort of synergy with Newk. Athletes peaking at 20 years of age is rare indeed. Except of course if you are a Russian female gymnast.

I watched the highlights for the Port win last year a while back and he was in a lot of our score chains, earning praise from the commentary team for his selfless work.
I’m looking forward to seeing him get a chance to show everyone that he’s not peaked.

Yes I watched the replay a little while ago and had noted the same, here’s hoping they sat down and watched that game as a team!

This is one exciting season. Don't forget, we're currently undefeated..🤔. As for Worps.as Parsons said above, it's unexplainable why he couldn't gel with Mitchell.
Also, Like SYL said above, I'm also excited to see him hopefully find tangible growth in his game. Losing all that heavy muscle might help.

It's possible he won the B'nF too early in his career resulting in a false sense of security. I don't know.
But really looking fwd to watching Worps (hopefully) recapture his form and some midfield authority in 2023

Undefeated AND underrated. A great combo.

I'm blessed to have seen my first flag in 1978...etc. I can't remember being so bullish about our developing list.
This is why.
1. Newk (or Nuke) cost nothing. I'd give a top 3 pick for him IMHO.
2. Mitch Lewis cost pick 76.
3. Amon A grader cost nothing
4. Blanck cost nothing. Could be gold but more time needed to assess.
5. Ned Reeves 2018 preseason draft. Looks good.
6. Meek. Gotcha. Huge addition to the club.
7. CJ... Hit the jackpot plus he's great for our membership.
8. Bramble. Has the tools but maybe needs more aggressive attitude. If he makes it, it means he's doing very well considering the competition for spots. We'll see, but cost nothing.
9. Dylan Moore. One game from being delisted. Now shines like the sun. Wow.
10. Nash. Cost nothing and hopefully goes another level this year.
11. Scrimshaw cost future pick 3rd and 4th rounders. Lol
12. Ramsden. Cost nothing but could be a star. Maybe.

Etc. That's without the youngsters.

Well said, extraordinary drafting by the club and all done without massive assistance a la Sydney and the Academy / former COLA concessions

Believe it or not, cost us less than this actually...

Cost us our future 3rd round.

In return, we got Scrimshaw AND their future 4th.

We got him for a pick slide from mid 40s to early 50s, or thereabouts...

Do you know who we used that future 4th on?

I'm not sure, it's very hard to follow the pick-swap merry-go-round, but we did pick up Josh Morris early 4th round 2019

In 2019 - Worpel best season who supported the 11 gamer? omeara Shiels and Burgoyne. Rest of the mids - smith Scully Henderson Howe Morrison. There’s no hawks hero’s there ( burgoyne). Totalled 609 pcm votes in 2021 our starting midfield totals 350 votes. Amon not included. Worpel brings his 2019 game and the pcm votes are a lot closer

In 2022 the expected midfield averages 50 games compared to 100plus games back in 2019…but 50 games is where it’s starts getting competitive
Sometime in 2024 it should take off like a rocket as we rate Amon Worpel Morrison Nash day Newcombe macdonald wards potential as better than where the 2019 group were.

As a comparison 2015 team Sammy hodge Burgoyne smith alone polled 670 pcm

Ooo reads not so great if not sarcastic

Possibly. I'd prefer to think that he's self-aware enough to know that his form line since winning that PCM has dropped him down the pecking order in terms of contracts. But that he's relaxed enough to joke about it because he's got enough self-belief to bounce back this year.

Doesn’t sound too good. I would hate to lose him for nothing.
He is under the pump and being realistic about his future. Really hope he can focus more on enhancing his strengths - ball winning capabilities/ extraction and minimising his main weakness - disposal. Really needs to take a leaf out of Brads Sewells book and be more conservative with how ambitious he gets with his kicking - Sewell did it beautifully. Worpel has more penetration in his kick than Sewell did but needs to resist going the long hoist. Does know how to kick a few goals so hopefully that can be a feature if his game this year

Not overly concerned, nice to see he has some self awareness given he has barely had a kick for 3 years. Hopefully he's right and this season is much improved and then he gets his deal.
