Welcome Welcome to Hawthorn: Matt Hill! CatB rookie, ex-Storm

Hilly feel free not to touch this one if it’s a sensitive issue - but mind if I ask - given the highly publicised issues that are going through the courts was there an evident culture in the club that is there now that a young Indigenous kid and his family have no concerns coming to the club? Just curious if it was addressed during the recruitment talks.
Society learns over time how to make things better as a ever changing culture and Hawks have the right people there now for Indigenous kids and it’s a learning curve for everyone to take on board and respecting boundaries for our kids and also teaching non indigenous kids that respecting boundaries are a healthy thing for all of us in society to do and make better for the future.

Thanks Hilly - appreciate it and all the other input!

Did he switch across because his frame is better suited to AFL, and it was going to hinder him in League?
He could’ve been the next Greg Inglis possibly but his road and the path to get there had a few positions tied up at FB or the Wings with Paps and Oates and such.. His size was one but he’s not limited to just NRL he had the same opportunity to grow in the Footy hence his move over

Please stick around 🙏

Truly appreciate you coming in here and providing knowledge around this young man and your family heritage. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

I cannot wait to see him out on the track. Just from the few clips he seems to be tremendous young man and very level headed. Your posts reaffirm this and then some.

Not to mention the obvious talent and potential upside. Very exciting!

Again, thank you.
Thank you. I’ll hold back on some insights due to privacy and respect but I just like to give a inside take on an exciting kid in an exciting time to watch Hawks and the AFL…

Firstly, thanks for that feedback. Very much appreciated as we want our club to learn and improve as it moves forward.

Secondly, thanks for all your insights!

Given many on here believed Josh Bennetts had a lot of upside, the Hawks brains trust obviously feel Matt Hill is an upgrade on that.

Unfortunate for JB, but great for MH and us passionate supporters and members. This drafting is very exciting indeed.

I wondered about it because while there were media references to his smaller frame, the storm didn't necessarily seem to agree with that assessment and were going to put more time into him.

Pretty excited about his prospects to succeed at Hawthorn. He's not like the young men coming across from other codes/countries because he's had a grounding in footy from a young age until almost his mid teens.

If an NRL player was ever going to make it playing AFL, I'm guessing that their background would read exactly like this.

Hilly just to let you know if you were not a Hawks supporter previously?
You have described your nephew as the perfect midfielder we are screaming out for at Hawthorn?
In my opinion?

Hey mate, all your question marks confused me but if you’re asking if i was a Hawks supporter before I wasn’t.. My allegiance now is with my Nephew so I’m a die hard Hawks Supporter now haha
If I described him as the perfect midfielder I didn’t want to give that off, I think he’s a Gem and when he hits his strides at Hawks when he’s a regular it will be quite scary how good he can be.
He may be the saviour for Hawks in regards to excitement and freakish talent.
Could be anything if it plays out well

Echoing others comments to say thank you for sharing what you have.

I was glad to read you are self-moderating what you are choosing to share - it's a dangerous slippery slope and we will ALWAYS want (demand?) more. There will no doubt come a time soon when you simply can not share publicly - but we "all" appreciate what you choose to do so.

We are all living vicariously through our favourite players, and the 'closer' you feel to them, the stronger the attachment. I hope the (inevitable) negative post(s/ers) don't scare you away - sadly many/most new posters with genuine connection to the club stop posting. We all love Hawthorn, and therefore 'our' players (some of us just express it a little differently!)

Besides the traits that have been mentioned about Matt including his pace and playmaking skills, the thing I am most excited by is his grounding at two incredibly professional rugby league organisations that have incredibly high expectations and excellent cultures, which bodes well for helping to adjust to another high pressure environment.

I have spoken to a few people higher up at the Storm who have spoken incredibly highly of his professionalism and determination and they’re excellent qualities to have when undertaking a new challenge in a different elite sporting code. Go well Hilly!!

I vividly remember Cyril grabbing Dusty's arm during an attempted fend off and bringing him to ground to win a HTB free kick. Can't wait to see Hilly do the same to a Reid/DeGoey/Petracca type.
I vividly remember G Ablett Jr in his prime seeing Cyril coming at him and imagine Ablett thinking, "can I burst away: No, ... can I push him off for space: No". ....Ablett then dump-kicked the ball forward, which at his best he never did. Cyril did not get a stat but he greatly affected the play.

Players who have speed and can defeat a don't-argue are invaluable.

As a side comment: We know the Suns wanted Matt Hill in their academy.
At this years ND draft the Suns will be getting ANOTHER supreme athlete in Leo Lombard from their academy. Seeing the Suns get Leo on the cheap will not feel bad now knowing we, in a round-about-way, are picking their pocket with Matt. And what is certain for Matt, he is going to get much better development at the Hawks than he would have at the Suns. Loss ( Suns), Win (Hawks), WIN ( Matt).

For me Jost Bennetts is like Ben McGlynn (178games). Not fast but a good footballer and 100% AFL quality.

But the Hawks are getting confidant and so looking to upgrade EVERY PLAYER on the list.

  • Bennetts for Hill
  • Phillips for Barrass
  • Tucker for JUH
  • Battle for DGB

And I know I missed one.

The point is, the Hawks will be letting go of high quality footballers in the next few years with the intent to upgrade them to better options.

This year, a good potential quality player in Bennetts is out and a speculatively potentially higher quality in Hill is in.

For me this feels like the build up to a premiership.

Thanks you for preparing me and also respecting my self moderating..
I won’t be scared away, I like to hear the excitement my nephew brings it’s a good reward my nephew can give to footy fans because of his awesome talents

Yes, fear Cyril had instilled into the elite opponents and forced them to making errors or having a poor disposal is the same fear Matt will instill when he runs at players when he gets his chance…
