Jono Brown just said he had the same injury. Jab it, and he's fine to go.

Not often I would take Jono Brown's take on anything more scientific than a TV remote but I will gladly make an exception here.

Gut feel is he’s given the sternoclavicular joint a good stretch- depending on the severity and with a fortnight to rehab the joint he could play finals week 1 with an injection to the joint on board if needed like Browny said
There'd have to some kind of nerve impingement there too you'd think. Poor Will got hit by a nuke missile.

Yeah I reckon the club will be quite vague on it- “he’s injured the sternoclavicular joint and won’t play this week and we’ll have to see how it comes up for week 1 of the finals”

Sam sounded pretty optimistic on 360. He’s getting a second opinion from another surgeon tomorrow but if it’s the same opinion (no surgery), it sounds like he will be jabbed up for pain management

There'll be different kinds of therapies he'll be able to utilise to speed up the inflammation process in a couple of days. I'd assume he'll be icing it endlessly on / off over the next couple of weeks. Clubs with the big $$$ also use those cryotherapy places but either way if the second scan is good news he'll do what he has to as to give himself the best chance to play if we can win on the weekend.

Unfortunately you can't really speed up the inflammation process, if you could it'd be game changing in bodybuilding circles. You can let it run its course, you can blunt it with cold and NSAIDs or you can try to ignore it with painkillers.

He's got 3 weeks before the elimination final, there's reasonable chance he will be right. Remember they do things to top sportsman <Queue ominous music> that they don't do to us normal folks. I looked after a motorbike racer who fell off in practice for the Australian motorcycle Grand Prix, they pinned his collarbone that night and was back at practice 48 hours later and competed 72 hours later. Racing bikes is pretty tough on the shoulder girdle.
Yeah whenever I read “the usual recovery” period I wonder whether same time frames apply to these physical freaks. Thanks for the info !

SC partial dislocation, depends
1. If its an anterior partial, he plays first final, should be no problem (under LA)
2. If its a posterior dislocation, thats dangerous, and season over.

far more likely to be anterior, but I have seen posterior partials, they are usually MCA's.
Yup, bang on. I said in the autopsy thread it would most likely be his ACJ (oops). The SCJ is more rare but does happen. Given the mechanism (shoulder to shoulder) the partial dislocation is more likely to be anterior. Posterior ones are usually a medical emergency.

His availability (if it is an anterior) will depend on his pain levels and how quickly he gets full movement back. The clavicle (collarbone) rolls on the sternum when lifting your arm above your head so if the joint is pissed off or loose Will won't be very comfortable reaching above eye level.

Speed up was the wrong word to use but most definitely get him to a point to subside the pain. First things first and hopefully the second scan + doctors opinion is good news 🙏

However, a partial dislocation of where his collarbone connects with his chest has been revealed.

Hawthorn has sought out a specialist and will get a second opinion.

“We've seen one specialist who says no surgery, and hopefully the other one will say the same thing tomorrow (Tuesday),” Hawks coach Sam Mitchell told Fox Footy's AFL 360.

When folks say a partial dislocation of the collarbone, I think they means a subluxation of the sternoclavicular joint. That's a pretty rare injury. Grade I are sprains, ligament OK, Grade II are subluxations (tearing of sternoclavicular ligaments; costoclavicular ligaments intact), I'm guessing that's what Will has and the worst are Grade III, a dislocation (tearing of all ligaments). Sprains you rest for a couple of weeks and dislocations in a top sportsman you would probably pin and get then back in a few weeks. Not sure about Grade II.
I think Tom Morris confirmed that's what it is. At first many were thinking it's the more common acromioclavicular (AC) joint that joins the collarbone to the shoulder.
