Really interesting to see the games where the AFL 'experts' are not giving Tom votes. Round 10, where he had 31 touches at 83% with 14 contested, 5 tackles and 7 celarances. Round 7 against Melbourne where he once again had 31 touches, 16 of them contested had 9 score involvements, 12 tackles and 6 clearances. Then this week where he had 35 touches, 15 contested, 8 score involvements, 5 tackles and 6 clearances. Might not have been BOG in those games but would have to at least pick up 1 or 2 in some of them. I think Tom might come quite close on Brownlow night.
I think he is a very good chance to win it - but he will probably need Hawthorn to win the last couple games and finish off strongly. The favourite does not always win, despite the media basically engraving Martin's name after their lovechild was suspended. Mitchell has racked up more possessions than anyone else ever. During the game on the weekend they ran some stats of the most 30+ possession games in a season (Mitchell now holds the record). There were a few Brownlow medal winning seasons in there.

I think Mitchell is the type of player that will always pick up 1 or 2 because he is right under the umpires nose similar to priddis who nobody expected to win.

The game this weekend as example he wasn't brilliant, but I don't think anyone really stood out as dominant, and the umps may be temped to just looks at the 35 touches and put him in the votes.

In my opinion he is right up their in the brownlow discussion and will be a real chance.

Not so sure how the umps will view him. He has a lot of 'blink and you'll miss it' possessions, whereas those who run and carry will stick out in umpire's minds, regardless of how they butcher the ball upon their disposal.

Priddis won a brownlow and he's not a run and carry type.

Has anyone considered how absolutely buggered Tom Mitchell will be at the end of the season?

I have a mental image of him collapsing like a marathon runner crossing the line, he has put that much into keeping The Hawks going he won't have anything left in the tank.
Surely he can keep going for just six more games?

Has there ever been a better first year for a player traded in to Hawthorn, or any club for that matter? I would rank Tom's impact and importance to Hawthorn in 2017 greater than Dangerfield's to Geelong in 2016 and greater than Buddy's to $ydney in 2014. Note, I am talking about his impact on the club, not saying he is/was better than those two in their first years post trade, though you could mount an argument that he was.

He has been huge. His dimeanour as they left the rooms before the game just screamed leader as well. Was very determined, confident, pumped up

[I have no skin in this game, so don't feel any obligation to take it on board ~ B&GBlood]

Best recruit of the year by a long way, has carried us in the midfield and really shouldered a lot more of the grunt than was expected of him. As the year went on he really started making more of the play as well as extracting and he has been a massive improver. Leadership has really improved, this was noticeable later in the season when you compared to the earlier games.

With Jaegar along side him it allow him a chance to improve his outside game and not be expected to be burrowing into every contest to extract it because no one else will.

Yep. Russell Greene and Burgers have probably been better imports over time, but Tommy's had the most immediate impact in his first year.

He's got such a quick footy brain, able to gather and instantly dispose to a teammate.

Every game there's an effort or three from Mitchell in the contest that brings me off my feet it's so good. He's really shut the media up about his supposed ineffectiveness. He could get 25% less of the pill next year and I'd still think he's a top player, thankfully he's an absolute magnet.

His contested marking for a guy his size is so impressive. Seems like every week we would do some hospital kick into the corridor and Mitchell will make it look much better than it was.

Hodge like in that regard.

Averaged 35.95 disposals a game this year. What a freak!

Lowest disposal count was 26. Twenty ****ing six!

That would be a personal best for probably 90% of AFL listed players.

Just so tough and no-nonsense. Saw a snap of him on the bench at one stage, had been banged up all across the field, and was just so calm. Concentrating on reading the field and working out where to make his next impact. Smart and tough.

In his case clever football is definitely not an oxymoron

As a "Sam Mitchell replacement" the most underrated quality - and easily the most difficult - to achieve is his relatively unparalleled ability to consistently put in elite level performances. Very impressive season. I'd hate to think what our season would've been without him.
